U.S. Sen. Rand Paul has won the Republican nomination for re-election to the U.S. Senate from Kentucky.
The Associated Press called the election for Paul shortly after the polls closed in the western half of the state.
Paul, who ran for president but dropped out after the Iowa caucus, faced nominal opposition from James R. Gould, a Navy veteran from Lexington, and Stephen Howard Slaughter, a chemical engineer from Louisville.
In a statement, Paul claimed victory and promised to push his conservative agenda for the state.
"It’s high time we consider what is best for Kentucky. It’s high time we put Kentucky first," he said. "Tonight I pledge to keep up the fight for balanced budgets, and American jobs, and an end to the War on Coal."
Paul, a Bowling Green ophthalmologist, will face Lexington Mayor Jim Gray, who easily outdistanced a seven-candidate field.
Gray has criticized Paul, saying that he has spent more time in New Hampshire coffee shops and Iowa corn fields while running for president than he has in Kentucky.

Polls closed at 6 p.m.
The race included incumbent U.S. Senator Rand Paul, James Gould and Stephen Slaughter.
CURRENT NUMBERS:
Precincts Reporting: 2792 of 3696
RAND PAUL: 127,164 84%
JAMES GOULD: 12,682 8%
STEPHEN SLAUGHTER: 10,975 7%
Shortly after being declared the nominee, Paul posted a video statement on YouTube. The transcript of that statement is below:
I want to thank Kentucky voters for voting for me today.I will continue to fight to balance the budget, to spend only what comes in, and to quit sending our hard earned tax dollars overseas. To keep jobs in Kentucky, to keep our jobs from being shipped overseas, we need lower tax rates to allow American businesses to compete. Jobs will stay in America when we once again make America a good place to do business. We must stop the borrowing and spending. We now have a 19 trillion dollar debt. We borrow a million dollars every minute. Economists argue that we lose a million jobs each year because of the burden of this debt.Even with this enormous debt, politicians continue to send your hard earned dollars overseas. Congress spent more than a hundred billion dollars on infrastructure in Afghanistan. It’s high time we consider what is best for Kentucky. It’s high time we put Kentucky first.Tonight I pledge to keep up the fight for balanced budgets, and American jobs, and an end to the War on Coal.Thank you for your vote today, on to victory in November.
