A Family Goes Homeless

Taken from "Open Congress", a family that would have a home and a job if our government didn't encourage illegal immigration and H-1B visas.

I sure hope it works out.... I had to run an extension cord out to out tent tonight as it is freakin cold... about 22-24 deg right now...Luckily the kids are sleeping at their grandmothers tonight. So... me and the wife can tough it out. All I can say is thank god for this laptop computer. I would be lost without something to do all night!

Can you please tell us more about this "tent" deal? Where are you? Are you in what they are calling "tent city?" If so, why? What is tent city? Since I lost cable, with trying to keep up on everything, I didn't get enough info in this situation (here in Florida). You mean you can't even get a trailer? Where are your belongings? And, I'm sorry, but I'm a Grandma, and I can't stand my Son's fiance' of 7 yrs, but I would absolutely demand that they ALL stay in my home rather than a tent. May I intrude without making you angry? Otherwise, forgive me.

Charlene,
My wife,3 children and myself were evicted around Oct 12th or so. Since then we stayed in hotels until the money ran out (ran out fast). Now we are living in a tent behind my friends Apartment complex in East Greenbush NY. It is not a tent city.... Just one large camping tent. I ran a electric cord out to it last night to run an electric heater. (thank god... it was cooooold). Nothing fancy... No one in our family has room for our family as they all live in apartments. My father is the only one with a house and his new wife does not like anyone but her own children. He wanted to loan me the money to move and she said... " maybe if he had a job I would have sympathy "....The funniest part... She is on unemployment herself. How funny is that. She has the nerve to say that....and she is jobless too.

This situation has been very hard on my children as I am sure it has on everyone on this site's children. It is just a shameful position that the senate has put us in for no reason other than to flex their power muscles. I promised my kids that we would have an apartment by Friday this week... One way or another. I lined up a apartment (a sublet) and the tenant is going to pay the rent until the 1st of the year... All I need to come up with is 949$ to cover a security deposit. Then I am all set to move. I am hoping and praying every night something will give and I can get my babies off the street and into a warm bed. I am so scared child protective will come try to take them away from us. Sorry for the long reply.... outraged

I feel for you outraged - I also live in NY - but downstate (Manhattan) - I tell u this much, my children come first. I will do anything in my power and then some for them. My son has been unemployed for a year and a half an believe me he has been looking - even went back to school and is looking for a training program - has 3 little ones of his own, which includes his stepdaughter from previous relationship (he just got full custody of her). My son has taken care of her since she was 2 wks old (like my own blood. If he needed me and my husband objected, guess who I would send packing?
Outraged: don't give up, never give up, u will overcome, be victorious - u have a FAMILY of your own to take care of and u will.

I tried to contact a old Major (Maybe Col) by now who lives in upper State NY.
Have not received any word back from him as of yet.
He left service and went to reserves so I dont know if he is back on active duty/deployed or not.
He will contact me soon no matter what his situation may be.
I do know he will help a fellow Marine out the best that he can!!!

outraged, I remember doing cold weather survival at Ft.Drum back in 1990.
The coldest place I ever been.
They took our tents away, fuel and such and told us to build a shelter and a fire.
We made a fire somehow and it wasnt big.
13 man tent team sitting around a small (fire) burning our underwear, books, magazines. The fire was about the size of a tennis ball.
No one wants to pull fire watch but this time people had no problem doing so.
Me and some other Marines got tired and went into our own sleeping bags.
Next morning they had to cut us out of our sleeping bags because of our sweet hitting the top layer of the sleeping bag hitting the cold air, we got frozen in our own bags.
It got to -32 that night.
Hang in their, you will get buy but never GIVE UP!!!!

You see, this is a national emergency, and needs to be dealt with like hurricanes or terrorism; yet we wait weeks for a congressional determination, and then we're notified that it will be yet another 4-6 weeks. This is an outrage, and should not be lawful. Right now I'm scraping to see just where I can get auto insurance money, after losing many items and utilities. After feeding the pets tomorrow and buying toilet paper, I will have about $50 to live on for the remainder of the month, and there may be a storm on he way. 4-6 more weeks longer is a devastating no-brainer, and this should be taken care of right away. If I was enduring what many of these people are, I would be in the hospital or dead. And, just how do they expect these people to get jobs when their minds are being trashed with disaster? The people in our nation that allow this to go on should be horse-whipped.

Goodnight everyone,
Tomorrow is a new day and sooner or later the grass on our side will get greener.
Meaning we will all soon be out of our situations soon and start building up again!!!

The bill is all well and good, but for the unemployed who moved to a new state to find work they are not eligible in quite a few states. Hawaii is one of them, and the unemployment rate is actually lower here than where we came from. The governor has a cushy job with an Asian company after she leaves office and she will not touch a general fund(slush more like it) that has $2,000,000,000 ($2B) in it. There is talk she is saving it to tie in with her new job, contracts and/or projects that will go into effect after she leaves in office and benefits her new employers.
We have the least amount of school days in the nation because of her, and we have 2nd least in the world (163)!

You all must remember, this is the same government that's in bed with corporate Amercica, greed and corruption fat cats. The same American government that instead of drilling for oil, creating jobs and helping our economy says no to drilling. This is the same American government that gives billions to banks for stealing our money and tanking the economy. And this is the same American government that took 5 weeks to pass a extension and 3 weeks to implement it. It comes as no surprise to me to see the level of incompetent greedy basterd people still screwing America . Its dog eat dog and they have a bigger dog.

Thanks! everybody for your answers. I crashed last night so I couldn't respond to your questions, Marine. Every muscle in my body is twitching and I have chest pain this morning. The stress is too much for me. I feel that I will never work again and be living in a garbage can some day especially when this extension ends. I have another interview coming up on Tuesday but I think it will be the same result. I considered jumping into the St. Johns last night as I passed over it on the bridge but I have people depending on me so I have to keep going. A relative called me last night and said that in Hawaii they just passed a bill outlawing employers to check your credit and some other states are considering it as well. Not much help for me right now.
