The following are just a few sample bios of the award recipients:

Jose's parents were divorced when he was 6 years old. Jose and his mother left
Mexico when he was 10 and moved to Colorado. Along with missing his family, the
initial language barrier, and racism, it was hard for Jose. At the age of 13,
his mother left him to live with relatives while she returned to Mexico. Jose
says the language barrier was something he decided to confront and work hard to
overcome. He is energized and focused on being successful and breaking
stereotypes. Jose is co-president of Student Council, involved in LIFE (Latinos
in Full Effect), visits middle schools with the group Reading to End Racism, and
visiting elementary schools to encourage young children to "go down the right
path." He is a tremendous role model for at-risk youth and has wonderful
rapport with all student groups, a phenomenal trait at the high school level.
Jose encourages students to get involved and to become educated in order to be
accepted into a college and become a good citizen.
