A real solution to the illegal immigrant issue?

A real solution to the illegal immigrant issue

    By GENE EPSTEIN

I have spoken with many business people who have employed incredibly hard working and honest immigrants. The problem is very few of these employees have authentic documents. They work every day and every hour they are in fear of being discovered and deported. Justified or not, they are constantly looking over their shoulder.

On the surface, one could quickly state that it is their fault since they placed themselves in that position. My response would be yes and no.

How ever they were able to come to the United States, legally or not, they are here. Those who sought legal counsel discovered many sharks who wanted outrageous legal fees and upon paying those fees received little if any help to get through the legal process.

Many immigration lawyers that I spoke with told me that they charge about $3,500 in legal fees to fill out documents and represent the immigrant in court proceedings. Fair or not, it is so high that few of them can afford to pay. That often means that, after their visa has expired, these people become illegal aliens. They have found heaven squeezed into tiny apartments with six to 10 other immigrants, all of whom are being gouged by their landlords.

They cannot get a driver's license without a current visa, so they drive to work in fear of being stopped by a policeman. Those who show a Social Security card (that they probably purchased on the black market) have income tax withheld that they never get credit for.

Their children suffer from the day they are born. Most times, the parents are illegal, but the child is considered an American citizen. Parents cannot help the child with his/her homework because they cannot speak fluent English. The parents are afraid to meet with their children's' teachers to discuss learning problems because they are afraid someone will ask for documentation. Consequently, too many of these students fail over and over, but are pushed to the next class, where they fail again, never because they have not tried to learn.

One can see the complexity of the problems they face with little or no hope for anything better.

But there are ways to change things that will not only help them, but help all of us. The federal government should set up storefront offices in immigrant communities staffed with young attorneys who are fluent in the immigrants' language. They should offer totally free counseling and visa processing. These attorneys should have part of their student loans forgiven based on a formula of time served performing these services. Once the word gets out that no one is trying to deport them, only help them, illegal immigrants will gravitate to these offices and subsequently get proper documentation.

The benefits are enormous to the government who cannot find these aliens nor really want to. Once they are being processed they are now identified. They can get a real Social Security card and the government will receive the proper taxes due. They can then get a driver's license and real insurance coverage. They can move into more livable conditions and attend meetings with school officials and counselors to discuss problems with their children.

As their children become more educated, they are less likely to be on the streets fighting for a livelihood or becoming gang members. The better their education, the better their chance of being productive employees and the less likely their chance of being incarcerated.

So there is an answer. The question is what brave politician will champion this win-win cause?

Gene Epstein, Wrightstown, is a retired automobile dealer and philanthropist.

#1: I'm sure part of your argument has something to do with your business friends who like their cheap labor and don't want to give it up.
#2: A lot of pro's throw their hands up in the air and say "their already here". True. But, who's gonna keep more from coming in? Have you pro's decided on a limit? Or should we just invite the whole world to come in and enjoy the good life at taxpayer expense? When does it become too much?

When you folks decide when enough is enough, let the rest of us know.

This is how to deal with the illegal immigration problem. As far back as 2004 and continues. They should get the message by now and leave. ICE was doing a much better job in 2004. But I think they will be able to do more under the SAVE Act. Anyway, ICE is still raiding, arresting and deporting.
I see desperation and they are reacting and they are making American more angrier than ever.

    Here Come The Feds
Groups report rise in arrest and deportation of undocumented immigrants
    By R.M. Arrieta
UNDOCUMENTED immigrants have been arrested en masse in a new Homeland Security program. Federal agents are fanning out across the nation apprehending undocumented immigrants with a green light from the Bush administration.
Eight months ago Operation Endgame was placed on the fast track under the auspices of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE, the newly formed investigative arm of the Department of Homeland Security and one of three new bureaus of the former Immigration and Naturalization Service. With a bigger budget and more agents, the mandate is to catch some of the estimated 400,000 undocumented immigrants who have final removal orders and deport them.
"Right now we have more than 20,000 people in ICE custody nationwide," says ICE spokeswoman Virginia Kice.
Since March, civil rights groups nationwide have reported a marked increase in the questioning, detention and deportation of undocumented immigrants.
During a week in April, nearly 170 people were arrested on the East Coast following three flights from Los Angeles to Newark Liberty and JFK International airports.
In March, federal authorities picked up almost two dozen undocumented workers at a construction site in Dade City, Fla. Also in March, a weeklong crackdown in New England picked up 60 undocumented immigrants.
In Houston, Texas, rumors of mass immigration raids created such panic in Latino neighborhoods that "they stopped sending their kids to school, stopped attending church, stopped going to work, there was a dramatic shift in the traffic," says Arnaldo Garcia, of the National Network for Immigrant and Refugee Rights in Oakland, Calif.
According to civil rights organizations, agents have been employing a new tactic that targets one person to gain access to an apartment building or home, and then ends with the detaining and deporting of other undocumented immigrants. This happened May 6 in San Francisco when agents entered the residential Sunrise Hotel to detain a resident who allegedly violated immigration orders.
Agents caught their target, but pressed other residents for their legal status as they walked through the lobby on their way to work. Agents swept up nine undocumented workers; all but one signed voluntary deportation notices.
The raid drew the ire of city officials. San Francisco Supervisors Tom Ammiano and Chris Daly, in whose district the raid took place, introduced a resolution urging the FBI and ICE to stop targeting hardworking immigrants. It passed overwhelmingly. If immigrants are detained, the resolution requires "that access to legal counsel be provided, that they get access to a hearing and that their case be reviewed by a judge."
"These kinds of raids should not be happening," Daly says. "It is unacceptable that these vulnerable families would have to deal with something like this."
ICE Deputy Field Office Director Tim Aiken disagrees. "This notion that we can't question people about their immigration status because they weren't the ones we're looking for is complete nonsense. We have a right to do our job and we are enforcing the laws that Congress gave us."
A similar situation occurred at a private residence in San Diego County. At 6am on March 18, agents pounded on Jose Luis Aguilar's door. When he opened the door, agents forced their way in, according to a report filed by the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC), a national civil rights organization. The agents apparently were trying to capture an undocumented immigrant with a criminal record named Juan Rios. The current resident, Aguilar, knew nothing about Rios.
Even though Aguilar was not the target of their investigation and had no criminal record, agents questioned him and his family about their immigration status. They also questioned his neighbors. In all, a dozen undocumented immigrants were rounded up although authorities never found Rios.
"I never thought this would happen," says Aguilar. "Yes, it can happen on the streets, you are vulnerable—but in your own house—no, not without having done anything."
Says his attorney Susan Von Posern, "They can stop you in the park, on the bus, they can knock on your door."
Since March, Border Patrol agents in San Diego have been searching for undocumented immigrants on public transportation in a program called Operation TransCheck.
"So far we've interviewed approximately 7,290 people and arrested 218," says Tomas Jimenez, spokesman for Customs and Border Protection, United States Border Patrol.
Although federal agents deny these are "raids" or "sweeps," community members continue to perceive them as such.
These roundups and detentions are devastating to families—who see their loved ones shackled and taken away in vans. "They [federal agents] operate on the fringes of the Constitution," says Christian Ramirez, director of the AFSC in San Diego.
When asked about tactics and methods used by the agents to get citizenship status information, including allegations of racial profiling, Aiken said, "We have the right, based on behavioral cues and other circumstances that suggest to us there may be a violation, to pursue it. We are doing our job."
Of increasing concern is the questioning of students riding the trolley. One shocking incident includes the questioning of a 16-year-old girl who was on her way to a charter high school in Chula Vista in San Diego County. According to the AFSC, a border patrol agent approached the girl and questioned her immigration status. "She provided her school ID and the agent did not accept the school ID as a valid form of identification," says Ramirez. "Then they proceeded to ask for more information about where she lived and where she went to school."
Added Ramirez, "Her complaint was that she felt threatened because the Border Patrol agent told her that he would travel to her school to verify that she was legally in the United States. As a result of this the young lady has failed to show up to school. She is very afraid.
"What documents do you need to provide to the Border Patrol to prove that you are legal in the United States? That's a debate that needs to happen, unfortunately it's taking place in the streets and not in the Supreme Court."

How many people does this idiot think our system can absorb.I would also like to see what he would do if we showed up at his house with illegal father and mother with 3 kids and insisted that he allow them to move in to his house now! there is no difference,if he is willing to let them move in and he help support them,I would believe he is sincere.Too many of these people are rich and never are effected by illegal crime, job loss, low wages, overcrowded schools, increases in health insurance, traffic, new diseases in public schools, higher rent ,increase in gas prices (more people ,less supply),etc. These people are looking over thier shoulders, etc because they are violating laws passed to protect us citizens. There are 200 more countries in the world that are poorer than mexico(where the majority of illegals come from). We could have 100s of millions coming into the us and not only the us be broke overnight ,we would no longer be able to give the billions of dollars of us aid that saves millions every year. This would be a death sentance for the united states and for most of the world in the long run.As for the politicians, they have shown their colorsby wanting illegals as votes or from money given by coorperations who want cheap labor. any politician who supports illegal immigration or amnesty should be thrown out of office as fast as if they said the ''N'' WORD .This idiot and all like him who write this crap should be shunned like a child molestor or rapist because his agenda is just as dangerous to our childen, freinds, family etc.

As long as they have job and/or social benefits, they are NOT leaving. Eliminate the jobs magnet. Ask your congressmsn to SUPPORT the SAVE Act - H.R. 4088. It eliminates the job magnet. All employers are forced to verify every social security number. It also provides money for border security.

    Just enforce our laws.

Any of us who are required to show certain documentation and pay taxes.

Only an US citizen is supposed to get the free benefits - food stamps, medical care, housing, etc.

Give the employers the promised tool to check out their employees - give them a time certain to replace all illegals - then come down hard on them.

    Cut off the freebies.

Illegals should get only emergency medical care and food until they leave or we deport them.

    That's it. That's humane, that's legal.

That makes them illegal immigrants, not "immigrants."

Living in fear, working in fear, driving illegally in fear, failing their children by their inability to speak the language of the country in which they trespass. How does this translate to they should be given amnesty? They created the situation by choosing to commit an illegal act, they compound that illegal act on a daily basis. They are the ones who need to solve their problem by taking their children and going home. You don't reward home invasion by giving the invader the home.

Enforcing current laws does NOT turn off the jobs magnet.

Presently companies need not verify anyone's social security number. Only 1% of this nation's employers do this. Any illegal alien (IA) with false identity cards can get a job, anywhere in the country.

A set of false papers costs about $150 - $200.

The Save Act FORCES all employers to verify, with the govt., all social security numbers. Employees with false numbers would need to be terminated. This new bill turns off the job magnet for IA's.

    I won't argue, but I don't really agree.

I thought there was a provision placed in the amnesty in the 80's that mandated employers check their employees. There was supposed to be some technology put in place for them to do that.

I could be wrong since I was listening to some politicians years ago -

They are using SOME law to round up the illegals and charge the employers - which one would that be.

    I realize they DON"T check -
