Reid Attacks Koch for Offenses Committed by Reid Donors

Senate Dem leader received tens of thousands of dollars from companies that did business in Iran

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D., Nev.) on Wednesday criticized a Koch Industries subsidiary for allegedly circumventing sanctions on Iran even though Reid has accepted tens of thousands of dollars in campaign contributions from companies that have done exactly that.

Reid also claimed that the Kochs support the recently introduced House Republican budget proposal. Neither the company nor its owners has taken a position on the legislation.

Reid’s claims were part of an ongoing offensive against libertarian philanthropists Charles and David Koch. Reid has accused them of being “un-American” for donating to groups that oppose the Democratic Party’s agenda.

A page on Reid’s Senate website is devoted entirely to attacking the Kochs. It initially cited former White House economist Austan Goolsbee, who falsely claimed in 2010 that Koch Industries does not pay any corporate taxes.

That claim remains on the website, with its text crossed out. Below is an “update” that claims the Kochs “have supported the Ryan budget, which provides tax cuts for the wealthy and protects taxpayer subsidies for big businesses and oil companies.”

The page links to a website from a left-wing nonprofit on the budget introduced by Rep. Paul Ryan (R., Wis.) this week, on which the Kochs have not taken a position.

Reid’s website goes on to quote from a heavily criticized Bloomberg articlethat accused Koch Industries of “sidestep[ping]” economic sanctions against Iran.

“The Kochs made improper payments to win contracts in Africa, India and the Middle East,” Reid claims. “And they sold millions of dollars of equipment to Iran, a state sponsor of terrorism.”

After evidence of the said improper payments came to light, Koch Industries commissioned an internal investigation and fired the responsible employees, according to Bloomberg.

Reid has accepted campaign contributions from companies that engage in even more widespread corruption abroad.

According to the Washington Examiner, Reid has accepted more than half a million dollars in contributions since 2009 from employees and political action committees of companies under investigation for violations of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act.

Reid has also taken tens of thousands of dollars from companies that, like Koch, have done business in Iran through foreign subsidiaries, including General Electric ($25,500 in PAC contributions), Hewlett-Packard ($14,500in PAC contributions), and Sony ($14,500 in PAC contributions).

Reid has also taken $26,000 from Boeing’s PAC. The company is currentlytrying to reestablish its presence in Iran even though the country remains on the State Department’s list of state sponsors of terrorism.

Harry Reid takes money from companies under investigation for bribery law violations

    BY JOEL GEHRKE
    MARCH 13, 2014 AT 12:30 PM

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., has received campaign contributions from people and political action committees linked to multiple companies suspected of violating the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act.

The FCPA "generally prohibits the payment of bribes to foreign officials to assist in obtaining or retaining business," according to the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Coincidentally, when describing Charles and David Koch as "un-American" during a recent Senate floor speech, Reid referred to a Bloomberg news story in 2011 on a French subsidiary of Koch Industries.

"These are the same brothers whose company, according to a Bloomberg investigation, paid bribes and kickbacks to win contracts in Africa,India and the Middle East," Reid said.

"I have no problem with people making a lot of money -- but it's what they do with their money," Reid told Business Insider in a subsequent interview.

Koch officials in the U.S. told Bloomberg in 2011 they had no prior knowledge of the illegal activities linked to the subsidiary. More than a dozen people were fired as a result of a French investigation, a source told the Washington Examiner in 2011.

Reid's mention of the French debacle on the Senate floor prompted some journalists to dig into the Senate Majority Leader's contribution records with the Center for Responsive Politics.

The CRP records reveal that Reid has accepted campaign money from individuals and political action committees associated with 10 companies linked to FCPA investigations.

The contributions total $515,100 between 2009 and 2013.

Here are the companies under investigation for FCPA violations, according to FCPA Blog's January 2014 list, with the amount of money their employees and PACs have given to Reid:

The blue bar is the amount given by individuals at the company, the red bar is the amount given by the company PACs, and the number atop each bar is the total amount given by company employees and PACs.

A spokesman for Reid did not respond to requests for comment yesterday.

Harry Reid Must Have Been High on Coke During His Koch Brothers Rant

Posted on March 6, 2014 by Gary DeMar

Harry Reid (D-NV) took to the Senate floor to denounce the Koch Brothers. He claimed that Republicans are “high on Koch” claiming falsely (naturally) that the only big political donors come from conservatives.
A list put out by OpenSecrets.org has a list of the 156 “Top All-Time Donors, 1989-2014.” The top donor, coming in at nearly $100 million is ActBlue that gives 99 percent of its money to . . . Democrats. Next on the list is the American Federation of State, County & Municipal Employees. It’s a union. It donates 81 percent of its money to – once again – Democrats.

Others in the top 10 are evenly split between Democrats and Republicans.
Another almost exclusively Democrat donor is another union -- International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. The United Auto Workers is next. The Republicans didn’t get a penny. Numbers 8-14 give almost exclusively to Democrats.
Where do the Koch brothers appear on the list? Koch Industries is No. 59 giving a grand total of $18 million which is one-fifth of what ActBlue has given. Former New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg donated more than $19 million in the past two years.
The OpenSecrets “list does not include casino magnate Sheldon Adelson. He and his wife Miriam donated nearly $93 million in 2012 alone to conservative super PACs — enough to put him at No. 2 on this list.”

It may be that Sen. Reid doesn’t want to upset the Adelsons since they’re from his home state of Nevada.
But the Adelsons are balanced out by liberal billionaire Tom Steyer who announced that he will use his organization Next Generation Climate Action to pour $100 million into the 2014 election.

Reid is notorious for making things up. You may remember his claim that all ObamaCare horror stories were untrue. Not some. All.
The following video from The Blaze nicely sums up the real story:

Who’s the Greater Threat to America: Vladimir Putin? Or David Koch?

    BY: Andrew Stiles // April 9, 2014 3:04 pm
    Who's the greater threat?

Is David Koch a greater threat to America than Vladimir Putin? This seems like a relatively straightforward question, but maybe not for people such as Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D., Nev.) and his left-wing allies.
Reid has called the libertarian philanthropist Koch brothers “un-American” and “against everything that’s good for America.” He has also taken money from Koch lobbyists, so it’s hard to say where his true loyalties lie.
Senate Democrats are basing their entire midterm agenda on attacking the Koch brothers, and liberals are so rabidly anti-Koch they’ve organized protests outside a hospital that is building a new ambulatory care center thanks to a $100 million gift from David Koch. Meanwhile, some on the left are defending Vladimir Putin.
According to National Journal, the Kochs have been mentioned more times on the floor of the United States Senate than Vladimir Putin has of late. Here’s a chart, via CapitalWords, that compares mentions of “Koch” versus “Putin” by Senate Democrats over the past several months:

So far this month, Senate Democrats have mentioned the Koch brothers more than twice as many times as they’ve mentioned Putin, who appears to be on the verge of invading the parts of Ukraine he hasn’t already annexed. Such are the Democratic Party’s priorities.
