    STORY HIGHLIGHTS

    • NEW: Police: Several shooting incidents in downtown Ottawa
    • One person shot at war memorial near Canada's Parliament
    • Parliament member tweeted that he heard at least 30 shots
    • CBC reporting that Parliament is on lockdown

(CNN) -- [Breaking news update, posted at 11:41 a.m. ET]
There were "several shooting incidents in downtown Ottawa" on Wednesday morning, police said on Twitter. "Incidents occurred at National War Memorial, near the Rideau Centre and Parliament Hill." All Ottawa police buildings remain on lockdown and are closed to the public, police also said on Twitter.

There were "numerous gunmen" Wednesday morning at the Canada War Memorial shooting, said Marc Soucy of the Ottawa Police Service. Authorities are working to figure out if there were two or three gunmen, he said. Only one person was shot, Soucy said.

Wednesday morning's gunfire in the main Canadian Parliament building started in the foyer, and a second round of shooting happened about a minute later in a hallway or near the entrance to the Parliament's library, Ottawa journalist Josh Wingrove told CNN.
He said several officers had weapons drawn, and most of the dozens of shots that he heard appeared to have been fired by officers at the gunman.
When the shooting ended, a person was lying motionless on the ground near the library entrance, Wingrove said.

A "lone gunman is deceased" after shots were fired in Ottawa, Canada, a member of the nation's Parliament, Bob Zimmer, tweeted Wednesday.

However, after that tweet, there were reports that there may have been further shots fired at Canada's Parliament.

The violence comes days after Canada raised its terror alert on Friday.

Earlier Wednesday police said that one person was shot at a war memorial near Parliament as media reports circulated that gunfire was also heard in Parliament.

Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper was evacuated from the building and is safe, his press secretary Carl Vallee tweeted.

"@PMHarper is safe and he has left parliament hill," Vallee tweeted in French.

The Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported that a soldier who was standing guard at the memorial was shot. Gunfire also was heard inside the halls of Parliament, CNN partner CTV News reported.

The CBC is reporting that Parliament is on lockdown.

"We don't know if it's someone from the military who was targeted or not," Ottawa police Constable Marc Soucy told CNN, adding that the gunfire was reported at 9:52 a.m. ET.

Parliament member Kyle Seeback tweeted: "Horrific day on parliament hill. Shots fired inside centre block during our caucus meeting. I'm safe locked in a office awaiting security."

Another member Tony Clement tweeted, "I'm with colleagues Mark Strahl and Kyle Seeback. PM was in Caucus but now secure. Assuming it's not safe to venture out yet ..."

Clement tweeted that there were "at least 30 shots."

Parliament member James Lunney tweeted: #HOC in Lockdown, lone gunman shot security guard, shot his way down Hall of Honor....we are all safe. Gunman dead! Thnk God & our scrty!"

Police were searching unlocked rooms in Parliament, Canada's Globe and Mail journalist Josh Wingrove tweeted.

He told CNN that he heard dozens of shots.

Earlier this week, a man who Canadian authorities said was "radicalized" was shot to death after hitting and killing a Canadian soldier.

Police: Man who ran down and killed soldier was 'radicalized'

There is no indication that the Monday incident and Wednesday's shooting are related.

In Monday's vehicle attack, police arrested Martin Rouleau Couture, who reportedly converted to Islam about a year ago, last July and confiscated his passport, but lacked enough evidence to keep him in custody, said Martine Fontaine of the RCMP.

"When he was arrested, he was about to go to Turkey," Fontaine said. "We stopped him as he was about to leave Canada for terrorist actions. He was questioned when he was arrested. We have not been able to determine any real threat at this time."

US Embassy In Ottawa On Lockdown Following Shooting At Parliament Building

    October 22, 2014 1:53 PM

OTTAWA, Ontario (CBS News/CBSDC/AP) — A soldier standing guard at Canada’s National War Memorial in Ottawa was fatally shot by an unknown gunman, who was later killed in a shootout inside the Parliament building, police say.

Witnesses said the gunman was carrying a rifle, and described dozens of shots ringing out in the Parliament building.

The Parliament itself remains on lockdown. Royal Canadian Mounted Police warned people in downtown Ottawa to stay away from windows and rooftops.

The U.S. Embassy in Ottawa is on lockdown.

White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest said Wednesday that President Barack Obama has been briefed on the shooting and that the president has spoken with Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

NORAD has increased its “alert posture” following the shooting. CNN reports that the FBI is also raising its “alert posture.”

“NORAD taking appropriate and prudent steps to ensure adequate posture to respond quickly to any incidents involving aviation in Canada,” NORAD tweeted.

Ottawa police Constable Marc Soucy said it was unclear whether there was more than one shooter. Some witnesses report multiple assailants.

Officials say shots were also fired near the Rideau Center, a shopping mall near Parliament. All three sites – the National War Memorial, Parliament and the mall – are within less than a mile from each other.

“Most of downtown Ottawa is in lockdown,” Soucy said.

People fled Parliament by scrambling down scaffolding erected for renovations, witnesses told the Canadian Press news agency. The top spokesman for Prime Minister Stephen Harper said Harper was safe and had left Parliament Hill.

Cabinet minister Tony Clement tweeted that at least 30 shots were heard inside the building, where Conservative and Liberal MPs were holding their weekly caucus meetings.

“Shots fired inside centre block during our caucus meeting. I’m safe locked in a office awaiting security.” Kyle Seeback, a member of Parliament, tweeted.

Emergency responders are still on the scene and paramedics took the wounded soldier away in an ambulance.

Ottawa police confirmed they had a call at 9:52 a.m. Wednesday with a report of shots fired, and witnesses reported seeing a gunman running toward Parliament Hill, which is under lockdown. Others on the Hill told Canadian Press they heard shots being fired in several different corridors.

The top spokesman for Prime Minister Stephen Harper said Harper was safe and had left Parliament Hill.

Emergency responders are still on the scene and paramedics took the wounded soldier away in an ambulance.

Wednesday night’s game between the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Ottawa Senators has been postponed.

The incident comes just two days after two Canadian soldiers were run over – and one of them killed – in Quebec by a man with jihadist sympathies.

That suspect, 25-year-old Martin Couture Rouleau, was shot by police, and later died.

Royal Canadian Mounted Police spokesman David Falls said Monday that the suspect “was known to federal authorities” and “authorities were concerned that he had become radicalized.”

The case is similar to one in London last year in which an al Qaeda-inspired extremist and another man ran over a soldier with a car before hacking the off-duty soldier to death. Images of Michael Adebolajo, 29, holding a butcher knife and cleaver with bloodied hands in the moments after the May 2013 killing of Fusilier Lee Rigby shocked people around the world and sparked fears of Islamist terrorism in Britain.

The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria has urged supporters to carry out attacks against Western countries, including Canada, that are participating in the U.S.-led coalition fighting the militants who have taken over large swaths of territory in Iraq and Syria. It was not known whether the suspect in the Quebec attack had any ties to Islamic militant groups.
