President Obama flashed anger for the first time in recent memory today as an eccentric conservative reporter interrupted his speech on immigration in the Rose Garden.
Neil Munro of The Daily Caller, a conservative news site, shouted at Obama in the middle of his speech formally announcing looser deportation rules, "Why do you favor foreigners over American workers?"
Irritated, Obama glared at Munro and told him not to interrupt, said he "didn't ask for an argument" and said the new order is "the right thing to do."
The change on immigration relaxes rules for younger illegal immigrants who haven't broken the law since coming into the country as children, a move that has riled Republicans while bringing the issue back into the fore of the 2012 election. The Homeland Security Department will no longer deport such immigrants, and work permits will be given to them.
The more lenient treatment is similar to the proposals in the DREAM Act, legislation supported by Obama but blocked in Congress.
"We're a better nation than one that expels innocent young kids," Obama said in his speech before he was interrupted.
The Obama administration denied that politics played a role in the announcement, but the timing is ideal for the president's re-election campaign. In the GOP primary, Mitt Romney adopted strictly conservative positions against illegal immigration in his effort to woo right-wing voters. He backs a strong fence along the border with Mexico, opposes most amnesty and boasts of his move as Massachusetts governor to deny in-state tuition for illegal immigrants.

Democrats have said they plan to hold Romney to those positions, painting him as a candidate with extreme views on immigration. Romney's campaign stumbled last month when the Republican National Committee's director of Hispanic outreach told reporters that Romney was "still deciding what his position on immigration is," fueling the notion that he holds few true convictions.
Kevin Madden, a former Romney adviser, today said on MSNBC that, "there are going to be a lot more questions here, I think particularly up on Capitol Hill and the Congress' role in whether or not they believe that the president can go out and around Capitol Hill and around legislatures and around Congress on something like this."
Obama's announcement today is likely to curry favor with Hispanics, a key growing voting bloc that could determine the winner in November in important states like Florida, Colorado and Nevada. The president beats Romney among Hispanics in polls, but most Latinos say they disapprove of Obama's deportation policy. Obama also plans to speak to the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials in Florida next week, as will Romney.
Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano today denied that the plan was crafted at the direction of the White House.
"No, this was developed by the department," she told ABC News. "It was developed within my office, and it was, as I said, before a logical progression from decisions we have been making over the last three, three-and-a-half years."
Under the new rules, up to 800,000 immigrants will be affected. Deportation will no longer apply to immigrants who came into the country before they were 16 and are now younger than 30, have lived here for five straight years, have never been convicted of a crime or graduated from high school or got a GED.
Such immigrants will be allowed to apply for a two-year work permit that can be renewed unlimited times.
GOP Rep. Steve King of Iowa released a statement saying he was "outraged" by the new rules. "The American people have rejected amnesty because it will erode the Rule of Law," he said. "In much the same way, I believe the American people will reject President Obama for his repeated efforts to violate the Constitutional separation of powers."
Rep. Peter King of New York, the Republican chairman of the House committee on homeland security, said the White House is "overstepping its authority by weakening immigration laws without Congressional approval."

>> reporter: i was not here for the rose garden ceremony, but i was rather shocked to hear about it. this is a give-and-take between the president and the press corps. here in the united states we value and prize the freedom of the press and the ability of the press to question the chief executive, the ability to question the president of the united states , but as in any place, there are rules and there are rules of conduct. when the president of the united states democrat or republican, is speaking to the nation and speaking before the press, it behooves the press to allow the president that space and room to make that statement and then yell questions out. everyone knew that the president was only coming out to make a statement, and would not be taking questions. so this person from "the daily caller" who attempted this stunt at least did something for his own personal reputation and the reputation of his organization.
>> yes, indeed. julian getting to the content now, it seems to me today we had one candidate looking back in time, small-town america, and the president looking forward to weighs in which young law-abiding immigrants, albeit brought here illegal i by parents, can be encompassed by the nation. is that right?

President Obama was in the middle of delivering remarks on immigration in the Rose Garden this afternoon when he was interrupted and heckled repeatedly by a reporter.
The man, later identified as Neil Munro of The Daily Caller, asked the president several times "why do you favor foreigners over American workers?"
"Not while I'm speaking," the president responded angrily. "Let me finish."
While reporters were present at the Rose Garden announcement, the president was not expected to take questions.
Asked afterwards who he was, Munro said "I'm just a reporter asking questions you should be asking."
The president was announcing plans to stop deporting and begin granting work permits to young immigrants who came to the United States illegally as children but have since been enrolled in, or graduated from school and have abided by the law.

In a video interview, The Daily Caller’s White House correspondent Neil Munro answered questions about his exchange with President Barack Obama in the Rose Garden.
“I shouldn’t be the story. The important thing is the president’s policy today, which could have a significant impact on American workers. I asked a question about that. Admittedly, it was in the middle of his speech. I thought he was ending his speech — his statement — but then I asked a question at the end and he turned his back on the reporters and walked away,” Munro said.
“Timing these things is a little awkward. He speaks very well, very smoothly — very nice delivery. It’s hard to know when he’s about to end. I thought he was going to end today. I asked my question too early. He rebuked me. Fair enough.”
Before coming to The Daily Caller, Munro worked at National Journal for over a decade. He has also reported for Defense News and Washington Technology. Judging from his experience, Munro says open press events at the White House are “well designed by the president and his staff.”
“He comes out of the Rose Garden, gives a short statement and then turns his back and walks away very quickly without taking questions,” he said. “Sometimes he takes questions. He took a question on Trayvon Martin in March. Sometimes these shouted questions at the end work — not today: He refused to answer an obvious and conventional question about the impact of his policy on American workers at a time of record unemployment.”
In the future, Munro hopes the White House will “arrange events so the reporters can ask the president or his senior staff about the important policy changes.”
Munro added that the administration normally selects which reporters are able to ask the president questions at press conferences beforehand.
“You can see the president at press conferences naming people who are to ask a question,” Munro said. “Other reporters sit around quietly not asking questions, not shouting questions because it risks their access to White House off the record comments and future chances of asking questions, but this is a very important issue. There’s no reason we should sit around and wait for another day for an answer on this important question.”

On Martin Bashir’s Friday MSNBC program, Maryland Democratic Rep. Elijah Cummings said that President Barack Obama and Attorney General Eric Holder have received an “alarming” amount of disrespect, possibly because of their race.
According to Cummings, the so-called disrespect included an incident involving The Daily Caller’s Neil Munro in the White House Rose Garden on Friday and coverage of Holder’s handling of the Operation Fast and Furious gun-walking scandal.
“What I believe is happening is there has been a disrespect not only for the president, but for the office of the president. And that is very, very alarming. We saw it when Joe Wilson called the president a liar,” said Cummings.
“I think a lot of the same thing is happening with our attorney general,” he added. “You know, these are two men who are doing an outstanding job, but there are folks who just don’t like it. And they never treated other folks like this, but here they are doing it to these gentlemen.”
Host Martin Bashir asked if race was a factor in these instances, and Cummings said he thought it was.
“I think that probably has something to do with it,” said Cummings, “and I think the other thing it has to do with is they purely disagreed with their politics, period.”

1. It is not heckling when a reporter asks a politician, an elected office holder with obligations to the public, a legitimate question. That includes asking the President to answer how he believes his new policy will affect US workers who are currently unemoployed.Quote:

3. This is not disrespect for the President. It is the President showing disrespect to the press corps and to the public in general when he absolutely refuses to answer questions during a press conference. And he does this regularly.
4. If Mr. Obama and his supporters want the public to show more respect for him tell him respect is EARNED, not conferred.

US President Barack Obama has been heckled by a reporter while making a statement on immigration at the White House.
It is almost unheard of for the president to be interrupted by a reporter in such a way.
Mr Obama was announcing a new policy that gives young illegal immigrants the chance to stay in the United States and apply for work permits.
"Why do you favour foreigners over American workers?" shouted Neil Munro, a reporter for the conservative website The Daily Caller.
Mr Obama was clearly irritated by the disruption and stopped reading from his statement, telling Munro: "It is not time for questions."
Munro later interrupted him again, prompting Mr Obama to say: "I didn't ask for an argument. I'm answering your question."
The reporter was roundly condemned by other members of the White House press corps for breaching a long-standing protocol.
Members of the media frequently shout questions to the president after he has finished reading prepared statements but it is very rare for a journalist to interrupt him.

But Daily Caller editor-in-chief Tucker Carlson defended Munro, saying: "A reporter's job is to ask questions and get answers.

The Daily Caller was founded by Mr Carlson, a conservative commentator, and Neil Patel who was an adviser to former vice president Dick Cheney.
What was lost in the furore was the significance of Mr Obama's announcement. It is a move that is sure to win him support among Hispanic voters in an election year.
It has been a bad few weeks for the president with poor unemployment figures, condemnation for his saying that "the private sector is doing just fine" and allegations his White House has been leaking sensitive information.
Opinion polls have shown Mr Obama running neck-and-neck with Republican challenger Mitt Romney ahead of November's election.

Associated Press, 1987: 'Why Do Grown Men And Women Shout At President Reagan?'

You'd think from the reaction to Daily Caller White House Correspondent Neal Munro's shouted question during President Obama's announcement of de facto amnesty for 30-and-under illegal aliens at the Rose Garden yesterday that it's the first time any reporter has ever shouted a question at a U.S. president out of turn.
Friday afternoon, the Daily Caller, Munro's employer, carried his explanation of the incident, as well as sturdy defenses from Editor-in-Chief Tucker Carlson and Publisher Neil Patel.
What follows is some historical perspective ("Why Do Grown Men And Women Shout At President Reagan?") coming from (yes, really) Associated Press writer Christopher Connell in October 1987 which is more than necessary in the circumstances (save here in full for fair use and discussion purposes; key items underlined by me).

Comments on the underlined items:
- Not only did they "do it for a living," they did it almost constantly during Reagan's eight years, almost regardless of the circumstances. It appeared to be a strategy designed to make the president appear aloof and stand-offish, when by 1987 (which is probably why Connell decided to cover it) it was clear that the press's image had been severely tarnished by its years-long virtually non-stop childishness.
- It got so bad that by Reagan's second term, the press was almost routinely interrupting equivalent presidential functions like the one Robert Bork was involved in as described above.
- I believe it's fair to say that Obama and his apparatchiks have limited direct presidential access to Dear Leader far more than Reagan and his handlers ever did. Shoot, at one point (and I believe it's still the case), Obama's people were deciding ahead of time who in the press would get the privilege of asking him questions.
Now, all of a sudden, Neil Munro is a "heckler" getting a beat-down from the White House Correspondents Association amid speculation that The Daily Caller might "lose its access to the President and to the White House." What a bunch of flaming, presidential boot-licking hypocrisy.
He was so pissed he nearly ripped the knob off the door! "How dare you question, your King!"
Funny I always picture him being drug off in a strait jacket screaming "I'm the President! Damn you!"
This man makes me ill. He is a parasitic infection, horribly deceitful in his language and anti-American in his actions. We won't survive another term of this treasonous criminal.
