CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — Republican Rep. Joe Heck on Monday entered the race for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Nevada Democrat Harry Reid, setting in motion what could be one of the top Senate races of 2016.

Heck made the announcement in a video posted online, citing his background as a medical doctor in the emergency room and on a military deployment to Iraq. He talked about the struggles his family endured growing up and having the help of a union and social services when his father was out of work.

"When my father needed emergency surgery, Medicare covered it. That's why I'll protect Medicare and Social Security and preserve it for future generations," Heck said in the three-minute video on his website.

The Republican congressman will likely face off against Reid's hand-picked successor, former state Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto. The Democrat announced her candidacy in April and saw one potential primary foe — U.S. Rep. Dina Titus — decide against running in favor of seeking re-election to the House.

Lieutenant Gov. Mark Hutchison, former Assemblywoman Heidi Gansert, Las Vegas City Councilman Bob Beers and former Lieutenant Gov. Brian Krolicki — all Republicans — also have decided against running, clearing the way for Heck.

Popular Republican Gov. Brian Sandoval announced last month that he wouldn't seek the seat held by the 75-year-old Reid. Sandoval said he wanted to focus on improving the state's infrastructure and higher education system rather than embarking on a demanding campaign.

Reid, the Senate Democratic leader, announced in March that he would not seek a sixth term and immediately backed Cortez Masto. The decision came after an exercise injury left Reid blind in one eye.

Heck served in the state Senate between 2004 and 2008 and won the congressional seat in 2010 after defeating Titus by less than 2,000 votes.

He won re-election by big margins in 2012 and 2014, even though Democrats have a slight edge in voter registration in the district.

Heck has spent more than two decades as an Army reservist, including three active-duty tours and a deployment in Iraq. He's also the only one-star general in Congress.

Heck was born in New York and moved to Nevada in 1992. He lives in Henderson with his wife, Lisa, and three children.

We're just trading one amnesty supporter for another. Rep. joe Heck supports a path to legalization for illegal aliens. Actually Heck could be worse than Reid because he is a Republican. We all know where the Democrats stand on amnesty but we don't need any more amnesty supporter's diluting the Republican party!

Thank you for pointing that out, MW! You're absolutely right about the Republican Party not needing any more amnesty supporters.

After the non-compassion shown by republican candidates over the murders of American women by aliens this week-end, I question fairly, "Where are you going to find a pro-American republican candidate?" Since the party has always backed the Bush family for candidates, that makes a very strong statement about how little compassion the party has to share with Americans!

Please explain. Which candidate didn't have compassion for the person killed? What did the candidate say to make you think that? Seems you use every single excuse possible to put down the GOP. Grant you, some of it is deserved, but definitely not all of it. Just saying .....

Trump, correctly IMO, commented this week-end about the Steinle woman's murder on pier 14, S.F., committed by a Mexican illegal as being more proof that our borders needed to be secure. Without any empathetic comments for the Steinle girl, Jeb Bush jumped all over Trump saying, he's wrong, he is just wrong. That caused me a flashback to my son being killed during Papa Bush's Presidency. When I wrote him and said the occurrence had made me see that we need secure borders, I did not receive a word from George Herbert Walker Bush about the border or of condolence for the loss of my son. The Bush family is the republican party's dynasty, the Bush family has a direct relationship with Mexicans. The party is not going to criticize republicans for not preserving jobs for Americans over Mexicans when the Darling family of the party stands for open borders and little if any compassion for myself or the Steinle family.

If that offends you, sorry, but it is truth as I see it from my experience. Jeb is the leading republican candidate and the party did not criticize him, that makes a statement about the party!

With this and other posts I've left today, I hope you see it. If you need, ask more questions.

I understand what you're saying. I'm just asking that you not paint with such a wide brush. I feel exactly as you do about Jeb Bush but that certainly doesn't mean the entire Republican party doesn't have compassion for those killed by illegal aliens.

kevinsdad and every other family member of anyone killed in the United States by an illegal alien has the right to paint with as wide a brush as they can find.
