Republican Swamp Monsters Drop E-Verify from Senate DACA Plan – Will Likely Include DACA Amnesty in House Spending Bill

It should be clear at this point that Republican leadership has different priorities than Republican voters.


Republican voters want a border wall, Obamacare repealed, tax cuts and for Trump to clean the swamp.



The GOP Swamp Monsters wants open borders and amnesty.



The Republican Senate dropped E-Verify from the DACA plan they are working on.

But some outlines of an agreement are becoming clearer. For instance, the senators have all but ruled out including a mandatory workplace verification system known as E-Verify in a final DACA agreement, according to multiple lawmakers engaged in the talks.


And Paul Ryan is reportedly going to include DACA amnesty in this fall’s spending bill.



The Huffington Post reported:


House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) privately conceded to a group of House conservatives on Tuesday that he plans to include a legislative fix for undocumented immigrants who came to the United States as children in a year-end spending deal.


Asked if he envisioned a December omnibus spending bill including Cost Sharing Reductions for Obamacare or some sort of solution for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, Ryan told leaders of the Republican Study Committee that he didn’t believe CSR payments would be part of the deal with Democrats, but that DACA would.


“He did talk about the fact that that would be good if we could get ahead of that as opposed to being reactionary,” RSC Chairman Mark Walker (R-N.C.) told HuffPost Tuesday night.


When HuffPost asked Walker if Ryan had said Republicans didn’t have the votes to do something on DACA alone, and therefore needed Democratic support, Walker said, “It wasn’t as clear cut as that ― and it rarely is, actually ― but he did make reference that [DACA provisions] would be something that might be part of the whole ball of wax.”

E-Verify Off The Table In Senate DREAM Negotiations — Thanks To The GOP

How should we apportion blame on this one? Show of hands: Does anyone think Pelosi and Schumer would agree to an enforcement measure as useful as E-Verify for an amnesty as limited as a DREAM bill? E-Verify won’t be put on the table by Democrats unless and until a mass amnesty for all adult illegals is on the table too. There’s no point in the GOP insisting on a demand they know the other party won’t accept if they’re serious about getting a deal done. A “minor” amnesty gets only “minor” enforcement improvements in return.



On the other hand, show of hands: Does anyone believe Senate Republicans are eager to expand E-Verify? If Pelosi and Schumer turned around tomorrow and said they’re open to including that in a DREAM deal, the Chamber of Commerce and agricultural lobby would descend and demand a meeting with Mitch McConnell post haste. Democratic support for open borders remains the chief obstacle to immigration reform in the United States, but lord knows it ain’t the only obstacle.

Several of the GOP senators involved in the immigration discussions are fine with punting negotiations over a nationwide mandatory E-Verify system, particularly since Democrats will not accept any policy provision that will help identify other immigrants here illegally…



“There are large segments of some important sectors, like agriculture, where we need to do E-Verify with immigration reform to make sure that there’s an adequate legal workforce,” Cornyn said. “And if we start adding too much stuff to the DACA-border security approach, then we get back into comprehensive immigration reform and nothing happens.”



Instead of E-Verify they’re going to try to get a “down payment” on ending chain migration by barring newly legalized DREAMers from bringing their relatives to the United States too — at least until they’re naturalized. How that ends chain migration rather than simply delays it by a few years, I don’t know. It’s going to make the bill exceptionally difficult to sell to populists. If they’re essentially signing off on turning a DREAM amnesty into a mass amnesty, albeit with a delay of a decade or so before the “mass” part fully begins, why shouldn’t Republicans insist on E-Verify as the price?



In a piece endorsed by Steve Bannon, Andrew Sullivan weighs the electoral consequences of Democrats’ increasingly fanatic pandering to illegal immigration activists. Lotta truth to what he says here, but it comes with the caveat that weak bipartisan immigration deals redound to the GOP’s disadvantage too. The public writ large will view them as being as soft on illegals as Democrats are, undermining the restrictionist argument for preferring the GOP. And right-wing populists, ever exasperated on this subject, will turn to populists even more loose-cannon than Trump to enforce the borders. Sullivan:


The Democrats’ current position seems to be that the Dreamer parents who broke the law are near heroes, indistinguishable from the children they brought with them; and their rhetoric is very hard to distinguish, certainly for most swing voters, from a belief in open borders. In fact, the Democrats increasingly seem to suggest that any kind of distinction between citizens and noncitizens is somehow racist. You could see this at the last convention, when an entire evening was dedicated to Latinos, illegal and legal, as if the rule of law were largely irrelevant. Hence the euphemism “undocumented” rather than “illegal.” So the stage was built, lit, and set for Trump.


He still tragically owns that stage. What Merkel did for the AfD, the Democrats are in danger of doing for the Trump wing of the GOP. The most powerful thing Trump said in the campaign, I’d argue, was: “If you don’t have borders, you don’t have a country.” And the Democrats had no answer, something that millions of Americans immediately saw. They still formally favor enforcement of immigration laws, but rhetorically, they keep signaling the opposite. Here is Dylan Matthews, also in Vox, expressing the emerging liberal consensus: “Personally, I think any center-left party worth its salt has to be deeply committed to egalitarianism, not just for people born in the U.S. but for everyone … It means treating people born outside the U.S. as equals … And it means a strong presumption in favor of open immigration.” Here’s Zack Beauchamp, a liberal friend of mine: “What if I told you that immigration restrictionism is and always has been racist?” Borders themselves are racist?

Seriously?


Seriously. The dilemma for Republicans now is that Washington is already so distrusted on immigration that even a good deal with real enforcement improvements will spook border hawks, who’ll be convinced that Democrats will water it down or blow it up entirely once they have the power to do so. If they do, both parties will end up being blamed despite the fact that it was the Dems’ handiwork: Republicans will be attacked by the right for having gotten rolled on the deal, having failed to accelerate implementation of the new security measures before the left could block them, and so on. Trust will erode further. Populists will get more desperate and more radical. Even a “minor” amnesty could have major repercussions.

Senate GOP Already Concedes E-Verify In “Dreamer” Bill…Jeff Flake Is Of Course Involved

If there’s one thing you can count on with the Republican Senate, it’s there ability to put on the best dang failure theater known to man. Mitch McConnell and his merry band of moderates can seemingly take even the most favorable situation and somehow manage to give Democrats 99% of what they want while conceding every major victory.


Today’s show revolves around the upcoming “Dreamer Bill,” being crafted as a response to President Trump’s rescinding of Obama’s (illegal) DACA order.


Keep in mind that Republicans control the House, Senate, and White House. They do not have to pass a Dreamer Bill at all if Democrats don’t play ball. Given that incredible amount of leverage in the face of an opposition party with none, what do Republicans come up with? Via the Politico…

Yes, the most sensible, effective measure that could be enacted is already off the table. Democrats, who have no leverage to speak of, got Republicans to give up on the only major win that could possibly come out of this. E-Verify is the only way to actually begin to stop illegal immigration. It stops employers from hiring illegals and discourages illegal immigrants from crossing the border in the first place because they know they won’t be able to work. It’s a fair, common sense solution everyone should support. Yet, Republicans didn’t even try to keep it in the bill. No fight, no argument, no give and take. They just punted on it immediately.


Along with getting no E-Verify, we also know a wall isn’t happening in this bill. So what’s left to get for our brilliant deal makers?


Ideas that do remain in contention among this circle of Republicans include beefed-up border security provisions, limiting some chain migration and measures that one senator described as a “down payment” on shifting the U.S. immigration laws into a merit-based system, according to GOP senators.


This is basically like walking into a car dealership, telling the salesman you’ll pay full MSRP, but you want him to throw in a few air fresheners.



“Beefed-up border security provisions” is code for throwing a little more money at the Border Patrol. That’s nice, but you shouldn’t have to trade amnesty for that. That should happen anyway.


Limiting “some” chain migration? You are about to legalize 800k people and the best you can get is limiting “some” chain migration? By the way, those limits only apply until the Dreamers get their citizenship, at which point there will be no legal way to stop them from bringing their relatives in. It’s basically a total fold to mass amnesty, but just delayed eight to ten years.


In the end, Republicans are looking at receiving basically nothing while Democrats get exactly what they want, which is a near limitless amnesty due to chain migration. Take one guess who the vast majority of Dreamers and their families will be voting for. Brilliant strategy here GOP.


Given the level of terrible this bill is shaping up to be, it won’t surprise you when I tell you who’s doing the negotiating.


In an interview, Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn (R-Texas) said the Senate Judiciary Committee chairman, Chuck Grassley of Iowa, has convened a working group on immigration that includes himself and GOP Sens. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, Thom Tillis of North Carolina and James Lankford of Oklahoma, as well as other lawmakers. Sens. David Perdue of Georgia and Jeff Flake of Arizona also are among the Republicans who have been engaged in the talks, according to sources.
A venerable A-team of failure. There’s Chuck Grassley, who’s crony capitalism knows no bounds. Lindsey Graham, who’s never met an amnesty he doesn’t love.


And then there’s Jeff Flake. Because of course Jeff Flake is spearheading an amnesty bill as his last hurrah.


Think about how ridiculous that is. This would be the same Sen. Jeff Flake who cited his immigration views as one reason he doesn’t have a home in the GOP anymore. So of course, let’s put a guy who readily admits he doesn’t represent the GOP on immigration in charge of negotiating an immigration bill. Makes total sense, right?


Mitch McConnell’s Senate has reached full parody level.


The next time you want to yell and scream that Steve Bannon is trying to destroy the GOP’s chances in 2018, remember that it was not Steve Bannon who brought us to this point. He’s just taking advantage of the situation.


No, it was politicians like those negotiating this bill, who have so eroded trust in the Republican party over the past decade, that have brought us here. Without their continued failure, there would be no Donald Trump as President and Steve Bannon would still be running a blog from the shadows.

This is absolutely ludicrous! The Republicans own the House, Senate, and White House, yet it seems the Democrats are the consistent winners simply because they know how to manipulate the Republicans to get what they want. Weak Republican leadership (Ryan & McConnell) is going to be our undoing. If I was taking bets on whether we're going to get an amnesty or not, I'd give 3 to 1 odds in favor. This is a sad state of affairs we're dealing with, it really is.

For the record, I feel fairly certain that President Trump will sign any DACA amnesty deal that appears on his desk. He is desperate for any accomplishment he can sign his name to and call his own. We haven't sunk yet, but we're certainly taking on a lot of water!

Very sad that our politicians on both sides of the fence do not want to be rid of illegals; they want even more cheap labor and to hell with Americans seeking jobs & quality of life.

Trump should insist on E-verify as promised for every job in any negotiations; shouldn't be any negotiations! The law is the law! If he signs a daca amnesty plus does not mandate E-verify then I hope someone with scruples runs next time and wins.

E-verify is the main key to self deportation. They will all be staying and anchoring more expensive for us kids - we will be lucky to get rid of the "known" criminals. This hundred here and there does not cut it. Not what we voted for.
