Contractors at your Home Illegal or Not?

I received this from a member in my protest group. She brings up a really good point about contractors and people you think you are hiring.

Those persons or company's who provide services to my home, repair, installation, etc., are being critiqued by me in that I do say, No Illegals. No one with a large Latino accent as I cannot understand them are allowed on my property. This is due to an incident I had two years ago when I asked Lowe's to do a service to my home and they sub-contracted out through a company that sent one person (which I didn't mind that) to my home. He had remembered being there a year before installing windows for Lowe's and he said "oh I remember this place". I said "yeah, how's that, I stole from you." I looked at him strangely and began to think I was going to have to fight for my life. He then smiled and said "just kidding". Well, I was never so happy to see anyone leave me home, not even my ex-husbands...hahaha... anyway, I reported him to Lowe's and Lowe's supposedly doesn't do business with the subcontractor any longer.

I don't know who the subcontractor was but under no circumstance am I alone in my home any longer with any stranger or repair person regardless. So I decided to make sure I am in control of who is allowed in my home from the get go. When we start sending the message with the services we are paying for that we do not want any illegals in our home and that if something were to happen you want them to be an American Citizen so you can have the right to deal with the LAWFULLY in a court if necessary. I have another story, but no time to tell as I have to get to work. Anyway, we need to be assuring that those persons providing services to us send us American Citizens

Yep....my dad made that mistake and they didn't finish the job and bolted for Mexico. They did it to alot of people. Got the money and left and there's nothing we can do.

I'd definately be afraid to have someone in my house. I'd be scared they were scoping it out for a later robbery or something. Thank heavens I have my dog. He atleast sounds bad as long as you don't talk to him. (otherwise he's your new best friend)

    Illegal alien workers

I live in an apartment complex. They hired a contractor to replace the side molding in all the buildings which required entrance into apartments to replace patio walls and screens. The contractor was using illegal aliens. I stayed home and hid all my pilferable items. They were hard workers but the quality of work wasn't very good. They left large gaps when replacing molding and never finished the job on most buildings leaving a mess on all our patios and no screens. When you live down south a screen is a necessity to avoid an insect blitzkreig. I suspect someone reported ths contractor as to this day (4 months later) the work still is undone and I had to look for screens for my patio. The wood still hasn't been waterproofed and painted and I had to clean up one hell of a mess so I could leave my patio door open and let my cat have the run of the patio. Needless to say the resident manager isn't too happy. I am beginning to hear an increasing number of complaints from unhappy customers using illegal aliens. I hope this continues to the point where employers will realize the futility of using cheap and unqualified labor.

Traveler, has this person been reported to the Better Business Bureau? If not, he should be.

Also, do tv stations in your area have a person on the local news called a "troubleshooter"? If so, contact him/her to see if they can help you out with this "contractor".

Was it on this site, that I saw a suggestion that you come up with an official looking form, that basically states that you will NOT hire an illegal alien, as it is against the law? Then you have the person in charge have to sign it, while quietly telling them that you're working with the DHS and can't have any investigation which would show an illegal alien on your property and that you CERTAINLY wouldn't want that person in charge, in trouble, you know??? Says this works for them. After all, if we called DHS about an illegal, it would be telling the truth, in a sense.

But was it on this site?

Thank goodness up here in Pittsburgh, the good American citizens didn't get the memo about not wanting this kinds of jobs. Had a new roof put on my house last summer and all workers were Americans and pretty darn cute

Weve had some bids for painting. When we ask whether they make sure the employees are legal, the typical response is "oh, they are hispanic, but theyve been with the company for 8 - 10 years -- and dont worry, they wont be coming into your house". Problem is, theyve driven everyone else out of the business. Now im forced to hire them pretty much knowing they hire illegals or do it myself. Just dont have the time to do it myself right now....

Most States have a website where you can check the license info for contractors (Always get the number over the phone beforehand to allow time to check). In California the info includes if the contractor is solo or carries workers comp insurance because they have employees. I called an insulation contractor to blow loose fill insulation in the attic of my Dad's house (there was NONE). A short while before he arrived I checked and he carried NO Worker's Comp Insurance. When he showed up he brought with him a pack of day laborers. I stepped outside and promptly asked him if they were his employees? He hesitated and said "they work with me from time to time" (nice comeback but wrong Jeopardy answer). "Are they covered by your workers comp insurance" I asked? He jammered something about not needing it and the State Fund would cover them. I said "That stuff just pours out of your mouth like fumes from a city bus, PLEASE LEAVE"! He had the audacity to tell me he was going to sue me as he had to pay the men he hired (day laborers obviously). I told him to go ahead and do that because I was going inside to call ICE, the State Fund (state workers comp insurance) and especially the IRS because there was some tax cheating going on. He left in a hurry, shouting a stream of profanities as he went! The next guy I called I asked first, he told me he worked with his brother and nephew. When they arrived, it was very obvious they were all family, they looked like it. They were all American citizens AND when I told him what happened with the other guy, he thanked me for doing that, laughed so hard he nearly split his sides and then gave me a 10% discount to boot!
