This weekend at a Private Fundraiser, Mitt Romney confirmed that his supporters are, in fact, gullible morons…

“We have to get Hispanic voters to vote for our party,” warning that polls showing him in a deep hole against Obama among Latinos, “spells doom for us,” NBC reported Sunday night.
The former Massachusetts governor said that his party has to offer proposals that would engender support among Latinos, such as a “Republican DREAM Act,” a version of a piece of legislation that would offer a path to citizenship to some undocumented minors.

Ya, but at least he’s fiscally conservative. Oh, wait…

“I’m willing to spend more on Daycare to allow parents to go back to work…”

That’s the problem with Mitt Romney.

Romney senses “doom” with Latino voters


Romney said the GOP must offer policies designed to attract Latinos, like a so-called “Republican DREAM Act.” Will that be enough?

Mitt Romney made some of his most candid comments yet about his standing with Latino voters at a closed-door speech to campaign donors this weekend.

During remarks at a private home in Palm Beach, Fla. overheard by reporters, the likely Republican presidential nominee appeared alarmed by recent polls showing Latino voters supporting President Obama by huge margins and offered a glimpse at his plans to reverse than trend.

“We have to get Hispanic voters to vote for our party,” warning that polls showing him in a deep hole against Obama among Latinos, “spells doom for us,” NBC reported Sunday night.

The former Massachusetts governor said that his party has to offer proposals that would engender support among Latinos, such as a “Republican DREAM Act,” a version of a piece of legislation that would offer a path to citizenship to some undocumented minors.

Florida Sen. Marco Rubio (R), who has endorsed Romney, has floated the possibility of introducing a pared-down DREAM Act with a path to legality, instead of a special path to citizenship. Romney has not indicated previously his stance on that proposal, though it’s not clear whether he was referring to the legislation Rubio is working on.

Romney said he would also go after Obama on his promise to bring up comprehensive immigration reform in his first term, echoing earlier remarks. But at the end of the day, Romney believes that the economy will determine which candidates Latinos will vote for in November general election.

“We’re going to overcome the issue of immigration,” he said, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Romney’s remarks to a private audience, which he has yet to repeat in public, represent his most revealing comments to date about his plan to win back Latino voters, but the task will prove difficult as the campaign transitions into the general election phase.

The former governor trailed Obama by 42 percentage points, 67-25, in a January Univision/ABC News/Latino Decisions poll. Most experts believe Romney will need to attract between 35 and 40 percent of the overall Latino vote to be in a position to defeat Obama in the fall.

During the primary, Romney positioned himself as the toughest candidate on immigration in part to make himself more appealing to the GOP’s conservative base. But those stances appeared to alienate large swaths of Latino voters. Party leaders have warned Romney would need to moderate his immigration stances to repair some of the damage. Even though Romney is now eyeing that pivot to the middle, Obama and Democrats plan to exploit his hard line rhetoric on immigration to further drive down his standing with Latinos.

In an interview with Univision this weekend, Obama called Romney’s support for Arizona’s strict immigration policies “very troublesome.”

“We now have a Republican nominee who said that the Arizona laws are a model for the country; that — and these are laws that potentially would allow someone to be stopped and picked up and asked where their citizenship papers are based on an assumption,” he said. “This is something that the Republican nominee has said should be a model for the country.”
Democrats have indicated they plan to blanket radio and television airwaves with that message in the coming months, which could draw attention away from Romney’s economic pitch to Latinos. The Arizona issue will come back into the fold next week, when the Supreme Court hears arguments over the state’s SB 1070 crackdown law. A ruling is expected in June.
It’s also unclear how a potential GOP DREAM Act alternative will be received, some immigration reform advocates and media outlets have already dubbed it a half-measure.

Also in his speech, Romney identified government agencies in which he would look to make cuts, including the Department of Education and the Department of Housing and Urban Development, which his father once helmed.

Significant cuts to the size of government could also be a tough sell to Latinos, an April Pew Hispanic Center poll showed 75 percent of Latino adults support a bigger government that provides more services.

You'd have to be a very naive person to not have seen good old Mittens doing this, it's in his DNA. I never supported the guy and will never vote for him. He is a pragmatic politician and if he is told that he needs to pander to a group of people to win, you better bet he'll listen. He's never had to deal with illegal immigration and legal immigrants taking his job so why should he care? He is rich and never had to deal with a problem that affects us. Business is his passion, that and being elected the President of the United States of America. The same people who were fooled by Bush and now support Romney seem to suffer from amnesia. It's the same crap all over again. Oh well, we'll just have to wait another 8 years to correct the mistake....

Slow down, googler ......... you're jumping the gun here with little more than speculation at this point. Let's wait and see what he actually does before jumping to judgement. By the way, who are you going to vote on?

Boy, this is like the Trayvon Martin case---conviction before trial. Those who still say they will not vote for Romney will be casting a vote for Obama. Hate to say that, I have heard it so many times.

Romney was not my first choice, not even my second. He is now. He is because as an Independent, I find him to be less of a slime ball than Gingrich and far more capable of restoring the economy than Ron Paul, (who has many good ideas).

The well-deserved rap on Mitt Romney is that he is a political opportunist who lacks core principles. No wonder. We're seeing a blatant example of that right now with the Romney campaign's efforts to simultaneously run two very different campaigns in South Carolina and Florida. This duplicity only confirms Romney's shape-shifting ways.


In South Carolina, Romney is sending out mailers touting his hardline immigration positions, has declared his support for forcing nearly every undocumented immigrant out of the country and he is trumpeting the endorsement of anti-immigrant zealot Kris Kobach, with whom he plans to campaign on Monday.


Meanwhile, in Florida Romney is running Spanish-language television ads and touting the endorsement of a trio of Cuban-American policymakers. All three are prominent supporters of comprehensive immigration reform and champions of the DREAM Act -- a measure Romney recently pledged to veto as president.


Frank Sharry, executive director of America's Voice, calls Governor Romney out:

"In South Carolina, he campaigns with the architect of the Arizona and Alabama anti-immigrant law and pledges to slam the doors of opportunity on Latino immigrants. In Florida he campaigns with the Hispanic lawmakers who support immigration reform and promises to open the doors of opportunity in Spanish language ads. Who does he think he is fooling? Certainly not Latino voters who care about immigration reform. His radical views in favor of mass deportation and his promise to veto the DREAM Act have already branded him as anti-immigrant and anti-Latino. Given that the GOP nominee will need at least 40% of the Hispanic vote to win in key swing states, that brand arguably represents the biggest threat on the horizon to his presidential aspirations."

Romney's two-faced approach to South Carolina and Florida and his overall embrace of hardline immigration positions have been condemned by voices across the political spectrum, including:


Eliseo Medina: Appearing on MSNBC yesterday, Medina, the international secretary treasurer of SEIU, said:

"Latinos are bilingual. We speak English and we speak Spanish, and we're paying very close attention... Mitt Romney has said he is enthusiastic and he is very proud to have Kris Kobach's support. On the same day he did this, he released his first Spanish-speaking commercial in Florida. He's talking one thing in English and saying another thing in Spanish. I think that people are paying attention. They know that anti-immigrant record speaks to who he is and what he stands for. And I think Latino voters are too smart to be fooled."

Conservative columnist Ruben Navarette: Highlighting the revelations that Romney has family roots in Mexico, the syndicated columnist wrote:

"So the candidate who winds up vilifying Mexico is the same one whose father was born in Mexico? Who can make sense of this? Listen up, Primo Mitt. You've made your bed. You're persona non grata with Latino voters, and it's your own fault. You can't win without them, but they can help make sure you lose. We don't care where your family's from. What matters is where your heart is."

Newt Gingrich: During an appearance in Miami yesterday, fellow GOP presidential contender Newt Gingrich blasted the Romney approach to immigration that he has trumpeted in South Carolina and avoided highlighting in Florida, stating:

"I don't understand his position unless he was just pandering to hardliners...I was very surprised when Gov. Romney indicated he would deport everybody. I hope somebody down here would ask him: Is he envisioning breaking up families? Is he envisioning that it doesn't matter that someone's been here 25 years and has grandchildren?"

Somos Republicans: The "largest Hispanic Republican grassroots organization in the nation," issued an action alert, which read:

"We are asking our members to call Representatives Ros-Lehtinen and Diaz-Balart to express Latino Republican outrage at their betrayal of the Latino community at large, by their support of Mitt Romney, the most anti-immigrant Republican presidential candidate. Latinos are solidarian with Cuban Americans and the Amnesty policy towards them, and we expect reciprocity in their support for a reasonable and decent treatment of the current wave of immigrants. The current state of affairs denigrates all Latinos, including Cuban-Americans. Mitt Romney is on record for wanting to deport our equivalents of "Elian Gonzalez" and he stated he would veto the DREAM Act."

Ambassador Luis Lauredo (former U.S. Ambassador to the Organization of American States):

"Mitt Romney's last-ditch attempt to win over Latinos is a deplorable effort to cover up the assault he has mounted on Hispanic families during his campaign. Just days ago, Mitt Romney promised to veto the DREAM Act if he were president, and said DREAM Act students are merely looking for a handout. Today, Romney flaunted the support of the architect of the most extreme, anti-immigrant state immigration laws, further proving he just does not understand Hispanic families and the plight that some of our relatives endure. This ad is clearly intended to misguide our community. If the South Florida representatives in the video expect to preserve any credibility with the Latino community and immigrant families, they will call on Romney to renounce Kobach's support, and to embrace an agenda that is right for our families."

Again, as Frank asked: Who does Romney think he's fooling? Lest he forget, we Latinos speak English too.
