Ron Paul: 'We Don't Need A Border Wall If Trump Removes Incentives For Illegal Immigrants'

"I think you have to remove the incentives for people to come. They come because there's a welfare system here, there's easy access to citizenship its politicized one group wants them here because they think they can get the votes."

Former Congressman and libertarian icon Ron Paul has some advice for President Trump.
Instead of building a wall along the southern border to keep out illegal immigrants, maybe he should instead try removing the incentives that attract them to the US in the first place - incentives like a relatively easy path to citizenship and easy access to welfare benefits.
After Paul said the shutdown "isn't significant in the scheme of things," Paul's interviewer, Squawk Box's Andrew Ross Sorkin, asked if he supported Trump's border wall, Paul responded that he "doesn't like walls" (though he didn't say outright that he opposes Trump's plans).
"I don't like walls. I'm a libertarian I don't want to wall people in and wall people out."
"I don’t want free, open borders either," he continued.
"I think you have to remove the incentives for people to come. They come because there's a welfare system here, there's easy access to citizenship its politicized one group wants them here because they think they can get the votes."
Paul said he understands this dynamic thanks to his experience working as a doctor near the border.
"I'm an OBGYN doctor close to the border. People would pop in they'd have a baby then the next day they'd be at the courthouse signing up for welfare benefits."
When asked whether he and his son, Sen. Rand Paul, had discussed this difference in opinion, Paul said that though they talk often, his son doesn't feel like he needs to run all of his political positions by him first.

Why does it have to come down to picking and choosing? Why can't we have it all? Ron Paul was a former amnesty supporter and I have no reason to suspect he's changed on that.

Build the wall, end birthright citizenship, and hold crooked employers accountable through worksite audits, heavy fines for violations, and the resumption of no-match social security number letters. No more free prenatal care for illegal aliens; report and deport them before they give birth in the U.S. Illegals will leave if they know the gravy train isn't rolling for them anymore.

I've been saying this for years. But not just the welfare benefits that Paul talks about. The freebies is just part of it. The biggest part of it is the jobs they steal from Americans. I want all of it, a border wall included, but what I wan't most of all is to go after the magnet that attracts them here in the first place, the criminal employers who hire them, with very heavy fines and jail time.

Ron Paul's logic is fundamentally flawed

Ron Paul: 'We Don't Need A Border Wall If Trump Removes Incentives For Illegal Immigration'

It is abundantly clear that Ron Paul's logic is fundamentally flawed.

For example, and there are other examples, two of the most compelling incentives for foreigners to leave their country and flood across America's borders is to escape an economically depressed country, and a dictatorial government. Should President Trump therefor remove this incentive by creating an economically depressed country with a dictatorial government here?

With all due respect to Ron, it appears his libertarian views have dulled his logical thinking.
