OOPS! Social Media Backfire for Ms. Obama – #FirstLadyFail

There’s an aren’t-we-so-cool-and-progressive initiative in the Obama administration to use social media to let people know that Team Obama cares, really cares. Certainly they don’t think that posting those social media messages online, especially via twitter, will make any substantial impact, do they…other than possibly with their aren’t-we-so-cool-and-progressive fans and followers?
Hopping onto the hip hashtag trend, Michelle Obama recently appeared in a picture supporting the 200 schoolgirls kidnapped in Nigeria. Criticized by some, she was praised by others for taking a stand against the radical Islamist group that took credit for the kidnappings, Boko Haram.
But when you live by social media, you also run the risk of dying by social media. Oops.
Ms. Obama appeared in the viral image last week, holding up a sign that said “#Bring Back Our Girls.” It wasn’t long, though, before that image sparked a counter-campaign. Critics of the Obama administration’s policy of using drone strikes against suspected Middle East terrorists went to work, with a vengeance. An example can be seen in the picture that accompanies this story.
In the years that Barack Obama has been in office, at least 2,400 people across the Middle East have been killed by drones, according to the Britain-based Bureau of Investigative Journalism. Critics of the Obama policy argue that the strikes have unleashed unimaginable devastation on civilians and their families – particularly in Pakistan, where drones have greatly contributed to anti-American sentiment.
