Carrier backlash: Governor of affected Mexican state calls for boycott of Texas businesses

    December 05, 2016Fox News Latino

Mexican Gov. Jaime Rodriguez Calderon, aka "El Bronco." (Jan-Albert Hootsen/Fox News Latino)

One governor in Mexico isn’t taking U.S. President-elect Donald Trump’s efforts to keep jobs from moving south of the border sitting down.

Jaime Rodriguez, the maverick governor of Nuevo León, is calling on residents of his state and neighboring Tamaulipas to avoid shopping in McAllen and South Padre Island, just across the border in Texas, in response for Trump having crafted a deal by which air conditioner manufacturer Carrier will keep 1,000 jobs at an Indiana plant.

"With us not going to McAllen for 15 days, Trump will change his opinion," Rodriguez told reporters at the opening of a gas station and car repair business in Monterrey, according to Telemundo.

Carrier agreed to maintain half of the jobs in the U.S. that were being moved to Monterrey in exchange for a package of incentives worth $7 million, according to Business Insider.

"Stop going to South Padre Island and we are going to do better in China," Rodriguez added, referring to a town 75 miles east of Monterrey, at about the halfway point on the highway that leads to McAllen. He added that local communities would benefit if residents did more of their shopping near home.

Such is the number of Mexicans who travel to McAllen from Monterrey to shop that the border town maintains a chamber of commerce office in the Mexican city.

The mayor, Jim Darling, told the McAllen Monitor that he had no idea why Rodriguez had singled out his city, and he was attempting to get in touch with his counterpart in Monterrey.

Nuevo León is the richest state in Mexico, with a well-developed industrial base, and Rodriguez is the most successful independent politician in the country, a man known as "El Bronco" because of his brash style, which would seem to make him simpatico with Trump.

“I don’t owe anything to vested interests or political parties, only to civil society,” Rodríguez told Fox News Latino recently. “People are sick and tired of the old system.”

During the U.S. presidential campaign, Rodriguez predicted Trump’s win, and he recently announced that he will run for the presidency of Mexico in 2018.

Woo-hoo! Trump is already keeping them out! Yes, please, please boycott us!
This is like a form of self-deportation, not coming over here in the 1st place. Don't stop at 15 days, make it 1500 years!

Planning a vacation to Mexico? Do not go there, shut their tourist industry down. Spend your tourist dollars in the Hawaiian Islands, the Florida beaches, Key West or US Virgin Islands.

Send the message to President Nieto to put HIS military on the border and stop the drugs, diseases, the human trafficking and invasion of OUR country.

President Nieto needs to get on Spanish television...telling HIS citizens to pack up and go back to Mexico. He has plenty of land for them...put them in a Safe Zone on HIS soil. He can give them tents and shelter, set up schools, put them to work building Mexico. The Mexican Churches and Mexican billionaires can work together in this effort.

Anybody in the USA going shopping? Going to the liquor store? Check every label, if is says "Made in Mexico"...put it back on the shelf...do not buy it.

The USA is a Nation of Laws...respect OUR Laws, our people and our Country. Mexico is NOT a good neighbor.

Every American needs to stand together...get the word out...do NOT use your money to buy products or travel in Mexico.

If our own government and Mexico refuse to secure our borders and stop this invasion...we MUST do it with our wallets!

We can do this...get on twitter to Donald Trump, to Fox News, get on FB, get the billboards up, pass this on to your friends.

A lot of RV'ers and Snow Birds would love to take their campers, motor homes and 5th wheels and vacation in our border towns. They are afraid of the crime and their safety. Clean up OUR border towns of these illegal aliens and gangs and our tourist business will thrive!

Oh yeah!! GAME ON!!! 35% tariff here it comes!! You wait and see, this silly House GOP Leadership better get their heads out of their behinds, put their fingers to the wind and listen to the American People. Mid-terms are only 23 months away. Americans wants their manufacturing companies back, they want the investment, the plant and equipment, the jobs, the payrolls, the wages, the benefits and the spin-off from those expenditures and investments that create even more jobs in the economy.

This "free trade" no tariff tax scheme to bankrupt the United States will grind to halt in the US under a Trump Presidency with a braking sound so loud, you'll need ear plugs.

So get ready. It will happen fast.

This Mexican President is talking about illegals boycotting us.

It would be interesting to know how the illegal situation has affected the snowbirds coming to the Rio Grande Valley.

It could have an affect on merchants because a lot of people do cross over to shop on the American side - at least they used to when we lived on the border.

Personally, I can't imagine anyone wanting to go to Mexico right now.

There are a lot of Americans who retired to Mexico, we considered it once. I wonder how they are doing. It isn't the drug cartels that would worry me, but the bad feelings toward Americans.

I agree with checking the labels and making our purchases count. That goes for the insane companies who think we don't matter, to trying to buy American made as much as possible.

It would have to make a difference, although the media would never report it and it would take time. People get discouraged or move on to something else, but we really need to make it a way of life until things change.
