Joe Arpaio, the Arizona sheriff whose tough tactics to fight illegal immigration and crime have sparked controversy, will stump for Donald Trump and other Republicans at a GOP event in South Carolina next week.
Arpaio is one of three "special guests" headlining U.S. Rep. Jeff Duncan's sixth annual Faith and Freedom BBQ fundraiser Monday in Anderson, The State newspaper reports.
The others include U.S. Reps. Mick Mulvaney of South Carolina and Mark Meadows of North Carolina.
"Sheriff Arpaio has built a reputation for being one of America's toughest sheriffs. Like myself, he has consistently brought attention to the need to secure our borders and combat illegal immigration," Duncan said.
"He also knows that Blue Lives Matter, and is all too familiar with the dangers that law enforcement face on a daily basis."
Duncan called the Aug. 22 event, which costs from $35 for single ticket to $5,000 for a deluxe package, South Carolina's "largest annual gathering of conservatives."
But the South Carolina Democratic Party quickly criticized the inclusion of Arpaio, who in May was found in contempt for violating a court order to stop racially profiling Latinos during traffic stops and immigration patrols.
"The fact that Jeff Duncan and Mick Mulvaney would honor a racist and sexist bigot like Joe Arpaio is disgusting," the group wrote on its Facebook page.

The fact that Congressman Jeff Duncan and Rep. Mick Mulvaney would honor a racist and sexist bigot like Joe Arpaio is disgusting, but given their support of a racist and sexist bigot like Donald Trump for president, it is not surprising.
The article below lists 10 of Joe Arpaio's policies. We are interested in hearing which of these policies Jeff Duncan and Mick Mulvaney believe are appropriate.
