Scandal Season 6 Delayed One Week to Make Room for America’s First Family: The Trumps Go to Washington

Do you enjoy Scandal? Were you looking forward to the Season 6 premiere, scheduled for Jan. 19, the last day before Trump’s inauguration? How about other Shondaland shows, like Grey’s Anatomy or How to Get Away With Murder, both of which were also supposed to return with new episodes that night?

Well, you might want to sit down for this: ABC has changed plans and will now be airing a 20/20 pre-inauguration special called America’s First Family:

The Trumps Go to Washington that Thursday night instead, according to Deadline. Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal will air reruns, and How to Get Away With Murder won’t air at all. The shows will return on the night of Jan. 26, assuming Trump makes it six full days without provoking a nuclear attack.

Shonda Rhimes, the creator of Scandal and Grey’s Anatomy and executive producer of How to Get Away With Murder, is no fan of Trump: She appeared in a Hillary Clinton ad back in March with the stars of several of her shows and has made her position clear on Twitter. So far, she hasn’t commented on the situation. But maybe she’s OK with it; she has excellent instincts when it comes to great television, and The Trumps Go to Washington will undoubtedly be mesmerizing. Grey's Anatomy, Scandal, HTGAWM returns delayed

TGIT’s triumphant return has been delayed.

The winter premieres of Grey’s Anatomy and How to Get Away with Murder, as well as the season 6 premiere of Scandal have been pushed a week from Thursday, Jan. 19 until Thursday, Jan. 26 due to a pre-inauguration 20/20special airing on ABC News.

The one-hour special, America’s First Family: The Trumps Go to Washington, will air at 10 p.m. ET, preceded by repeats of Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal at 8 p.m. ET and 9 p.m. ET, respectively.

Publicly, ABC said the move was made to ensure TGIT would return with three original episodes.

But it was clearly a late-breaking decision to add the news special since ABC had already been promoting the Jan. 19 return of TGIT with sexy teasers.

Ratings on ABC’s Thursday lineup faltered this fall without Shondaland’s full lineup of hell-raisers so the return of Scandal — which will reveal whether Mellie or Frankie won the election — could provide a much-needed boost.

TGIT will officially return Thursday, Jan. 26, with Grey’s Anatomy at 8 p.m. ET, Scandal at 9 p.m. ET and How to Get Away with Murder at 10 p.m. ET on ABC.
