Paul Ryan won’t defend or campaign for Trump ahead of election

Paul Ryan won’t defend or campaign for Trump ahead of election

By Kelsey Snell and Juliet Eilperin October 10 at 1:30 PM

Paul Ryan told a crowd at a fall festival in Wisconsin that there was a “troubling” "elephant in the room,” after the Washington Post revealed a 2005 recording of Trump speaking in very lewd terms about women. (The Washington Post)

House Speaker Paul Ryan’s (R-Wis.) decision Monday to not campaign with or defend Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump through the November election sparked a public feud with his party’s standard bearer within a matter of hours, suggesting the widening split within the GOP could reverberate long after the presidential race is decided.

Ryan’s move–and the blunt assessment of the race he and other congressional leaders delivered during a conference call with House GOP lawmakers Monday morning–underscored the perilous choice Republican officials now face in the wake of Friday’s release of a 2005 videotape in which Trump made lewd comments about women.

They can remain in line with their nominee, which will please their base but could alienate swing voters critical to maintaining their hold on Congress. Or they could renounce him and offend Republicans eager for a direct confrontation with both Clinton and her husband.

For his part, the speaker — who cancelled an appearance with Trump after the videotape surfaced Friday — did neither. He won’t publicly campaign with Trump, but he also did not rescind his endorsement of his party’s controversial nominee or back away from his pledge to vote for him.

Trump lashed out at Ryan Monday, saying he “should spend more time on balancing the budget, jobs and illegal immigration and not waste his time on fighting Republican nominee.” Within a matter of minutes, more than 6,300 people had favorited the tweet.

The widening chasm between GOP establishment leaders and Trump, who is now emboldened given his assertive debate performance Sunday night, has moved the party into uncharted territory in the final weeks of an already-volatile and unpredictable presidential contest. Both Trump’s vice presidential running mate, Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, and his campaign manager, Kellyanne Conway, took to the airwaves Monday to make it clear Trump intended to remain on the offensive for the duration of the campaign. And Trump’s senior communications adviser Jason Miller tweeted “nothing’s changed” after the congressional call because his candidate has always been a Washington outsider.

And in an interview Monday, former House speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.), a close ally of Trump’s, said his performance would make it more difficult for Republicans to abandon him. “They’ve really raised the ante on Republicans who want to cut and run,” he said. “How can you have watched that debate without knowing he won?”

In an email Monday Ryan spokeswoman AshLee Strong said “there is no update in his position at this time” when it came to endorsing Trump. But she added, “The speaker is going to spend the next month focused entirely on protecting our congressional majorities.”

In withdrawing his public support from Trump, Ryan is essentially giving other Republican lawmakers license to do the same if they oppose Trump’s statements and are concerned about their own reelection chances. The Wisconsin Republican canceled an appearance with Trump after the Post first reported the 2005 tape . Ryan said he was “disgusted” by the comments but did not at that time withdraw his support for Trump

“You all need to do what’s best for you and your district,” Ryan said, according to two participants, who asked not to be named because of the private nature the call.

A mixture of boos and cheers greeted House Speaker Paul Ryan at a Republican rally in his Wisconsin congressional district. Addressing the "elephant in the room," Speaker Ryan said he stood by the statement he released Oct. 8. (AP)

With this move, Ryan at least partially joined a growing group of high-profile Republican lawmakers who have renounced their support of Trump following the disclosure Friday by The Washington Post of an 11-year-old videotape of the businessman talking casually about kissing and groping women. That group includes Rep. Jason Chaffetz (Utah) and Sens. Kelly Ayotte (N.H.) and John McCain (Ariz.), both in tough reelection races.

Republicans who participated in the post-debate conference call Monday morning are becoming increasingly worried about their chances of holding onto their 30-seat House majority as Trump lags dangerously behind Hillary Clinton in the polls. One described the tone of the call as “nervous.”

An NBC News-Wall Street Journal survey released Monday showed Trump taking a big dip following the release of the videotape, with Clinton leading Trump by double digits among likely voters, 46 to 35 percent, in a four-way contest. Democrats had a seven-point lead on the question of which party voters would like to see control Congress.

Rep. Greg Walden (R-Ore.), chairman of the House GOP campaign arm, briefed lawmakers on the House battlegrounds, warning the “ground is shifting,” according to lawmaker on the call. Walden said Republicans should continue to poll their races and that winning their races was equivalent to “landing an airplane in a hurricane: ‘You have to trust the instruments.'”

The speaker plans to spend the next month, he told lawmakers on the conference call, “only campaigning for House seats and not going to promote or defend Trump,” according to a GOP lawmaker. Ryan plans to campaign in 17 states and 42 cities in October to help preserve his majority.

The House GOP call was an opportunity for members to check in after a chaotic weekend where dozens of GOP lawmakers revoked their support for Trump after the release of a 11-year-old recording of Trump using graphic language to describe kissing and groping women against their will. Lawmakers spent the weekend fielding a barrage of questions about their support for Trump without any formal guidance from party leaders.

Ryan typically holds weekly sessions for his members, referring to the confabs as “family meetings” where members are invited to speak their minds. The meetings have become a mainstay for a House GOP that has been plagued by infighting and crisis for more than a year.

Pence, for his part, made his first campaign appearance since news of the videotape had broken, telling a group in Charlotte, N.C. Monday that it had been “an interesting few days.” He lauded Trump for apologizing during the debate for his vulgar remarks about forcing himself on women in 2005.

“It takes a big man to know when he’s wrong and admit it,” said Pence, adding, “Donald Trump last night showed that he’s a big man.”

The governor also brought up his Christian faith in his explanation of why he continues to stand by Trump, saying he believes in “grace” and “forgiveness.”

Pence made a similar pitch while speaking on Fox News Channel’s “Fox and Friends” Monday, even as he made clear that his former colleagues in Congress should remembers that voters rather than elected officials will determine who succeeds President Obama.

“My hope is that people across the country, including elected officials, believe in redemption as much as I do,” he said. “I’m happy to talk to any of my friends in leadership. But really, this election is really in the hands of the American people.”

Paul Kane in Washington and Sean Sullivan in Charlotte, N.C. contributed to this report.

Mary Matalin: ‘We Have a Republican Nominee Who Has a Private Conversation about Sex He’s Not Getting and the Party Abandons Him’

    By Melanie Hunter |
    October 10, 2016 | 11:58 AM EDT

Republican strategist Mary Matalin (AP Photo)

(CNSNews.com) – Republican strategist Mary Matalin said during a roundtable discussion Sunday on ABC’s “This Week with George Stephanopoulos” that the Democratic Party stood behind President Bill Clinton during his sex scandal with a White House intern but the Republican Party is abandoning GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump for a “private conversation about sex he’s not getting.”

“So here we have -- this is a difference between the parties. We have a Democrat who acts with his intern in the White House and the party rallies around him. We have a Republican nominee who has a private conversation about sex he's not getting and the party abandons him,” said Matalin, referring to President Bill Clinton and Trump, respectively.

ABC News political analyst Matthew Dowd said Trump’s brand was “seriously damaged” by videotaped remarks he made in 2005 that surfaced over the weekend, where Trump is heard bragging about kissing and groping women.

Dowd compared it to the aftermath of golfer Tiger Woods when news came out about Woods’ marital infidelity.

“This is Hurricane Donald this weekend as a category 5 when you look at this, and I think we're going to look at the aftermath of this. I was thinking about the effect that this could have. To me this is akin to Tiger Woods in the Escalade hitting the fire hydrant in 2009. And ever since that, point his career was basically careened,” Dowd said.

When asked what Trump can do, Matalin said, “Well, he can do more of what he's been doing, but I disagree with that, and I would say something similar that we have seen in our 200 years is New Hampshire, 1992, Monica Lewinsky in the White House.

“So here we have -- this is a difference between the parties. We have a Democrat who acts with his intern in the White House and the party rallies around him. We have a Republican nominee who has a private conversation about sex he's not getting and the party abandons him,” she said.

“But that's what I'm talking about. What's unprecedented here is not just the tape it's the reaction over the last 48 hours,” host George Stephanopoulos said.

“Well, it says something about the party. It says something good about the party. It says something that is aggravating to conservatives out there of how the party does not stick with their nominee. He wasn't my first, second or 16th choice, but he's the guy,” Matalin said.

“Well, I think this tells you a couple things. One is a terrible thing. I can't defend it and do not plan to. But I'm not sure that -- I would have a little different view than Matt because unlike Tiger Woods there are big tidal forces underneath this debate. This election, ultimately, is not about Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton, both who have huge negatives,” Republican strategist Alex Castellanos said.

“Donald Trump, should be -- some of the things he said and done, if he hadn't done those, he might be 10 points ahead,” Castellanos said.

“What are those big tidal forces? This country is headed in the wrong direction. The ISIS JV team has turned into an NBA pro team. The economy is stagnant and people's lives feel like they're being wasted. Guess what, they're voting for change,” Castellanos added.

“First of all, this isn't just words. This isn't boys will be boys. This is somebody celebrating sexual predation, right. And in the 1990s, as Mary just mentioned, the Republicans went out of their way saying that a sexual predator shouldn't be in the White House,” Dowd said.

“And he was reelected,” Castellanos said about Bill Clinton.

“Wait a second. I'm talking about hypocrisy, hypocrisy, and now in 2016, Republicans are making the argument -- some Republicans are making the argument that it's OK to put a sexual predator back in the White House,” Dowd said.

“Sexual predator? Big talker. Locker room talker,” Matalin said.

This is typical Ryan. This is the common thread in his life. It's all about him, not about our country, not about our citizens. It's about ... him. Ryan has absolutely NOTHING invested in our political system. Ryan has been and is a gainer, it's all about gains for him. His political career is how he lives in a big house with a big gated yard.

As Trump pointed out today in his response to Ryan's statement, Ryan needs to focus on balancing the budget, jobs and illegal immigration, not exploiting his role as Speaker of the House to fight our Republican nominee.

Ryan has only won one type of federal election, a Congressional district in Wisconsin. He doesn't represent America or Americans, he represents himself, and I'm sure to some degree special interests in his district. Most Republican Voters don't like him. Most Republican voters want him replaced as Speaker in January. Most Republican voters opposed his election as Speaker to begin with. Most Republican voters wanted the 1st district of Wisconsin to elect Paul Nehlen as the Republican candidate for this seat in Congress and remove Paul Ryan from the US Congress, and here's why:

    1. Paul Ryan supports amnesty for illegal aliens which is Open Borders
    2. Paul Ryan supports free trade treason and the TPP which is Global Trade at the expense of the US
    3. Paul Ryan wants to cut Social Security benefits, raise the retirement age and privatize the system which is cheating our Seniors

Paul Ryan shouldn't even be in the US Congress, let alone be a spokesman on any level for the Republican Party, Republicans in Congress or this Presidential election.

Paul Ryan is a mess and he's gotta go. The Corrupt Media of course loves him because he plays right into their hands to elect Hillary Clinton in November. When you sell out your party, the voters and your country, all of which Paul Ryan has done in oh such clever ways, then you are unfit to serve in the US Congress or any other capacity of public service.

Trump saw this, he knew this, and now he can attack this problem head on, which he will do. The gloves of unity with scoundrels like Paul Ryan are ... OFF.

SO GET READY: Trump will now do what he wanted to do for Paul Nehlen, but couldn't at the time.

TRUMP SUPPORTERS, this is war, it's time to fight for our candidate, Donald J Trump, like we've never fought for a candidate before. Donald Trump is the person for the job, he is the only one for the job, he is the only one who wants to do the job, who can do the job and will do the job.

Donald Trump should have never tried to cuddle up to RINO Ryan in the first place.

LOL!! Exactly. He took a woman furniture shopping. That was his big "hit" on her. I thought that was hilarious.

By the way, I've got Democrat friends who think this whole jaded thing was a huge set-up against Trump, which it was, and everyone making a big deal out of it are a bunch of hypocrites. Of course, I totally agreed with them.

Trump's got this, if we've got his back. Plain and Simple.
