McConnell: 'Obvious' Trump doesn't know issues

    Story highlights

McConnell said the obvious lack of knowledge is another reason he urges Trump to use scripts
The comments were the latest in a string of criticism of Trump from McConnell

Washington (CNN)Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell says Donald Trump needs to carefully select a running mate to bolster his inexperience, adding that Trump doesn't know much about "the issues."

McConnell made the comments in a podcast with Bloomberg Politics, as he continued to repudiate comments made by Trump about a federal judge.

"He needs someone highly experienced and very knowledgeable because it's pretty obvious he doesn't know a lot about the issues," McConnell said of a running mate for the mogul.

McConnell said the obvious lack of knowledge is another reason that the Kentucky Republican has pressed the presumptive GOP nominee to use scripts.

"You see that in the debates in which he's participated," McConnell said. "It's why I have argued to him publicly and privately that he ought to use a script more often -- there is nothing wrong with having prepared texts."
The comments were the latest in a string of criticism of Trump from McConnell, who has called Trump's comments about the judge "totally inappropriate."

Trump has faced a firestorm since saying the Indiana-born judge in his Trump University lawsuit may be biased because he has Mexican heritage. While most of the top members of the Republican Party have called out the comments, they are also sticking by their endorsements of Trump.

McConnell stood by that, but said Trump needs to show improvement.

"I object to a whole series of things that he's said -- vehemently object to them. I think all of that needs to stop. Both the shots at people he defeated in the primary and these attacks on various ethnic groups in the country," McConnell told Bloomberg.

Citing swing-state polling, McConnell shows confidence in Trump

And McConnell wouldn't flatly rule out rescinding his endorsement, dodging the question when asked directly.

"I'm not going to speculate about what he might say, or what I might do," he said. "But I think it's pretty clear and I've been pretty clear publicly about how I think he ought to change direction and I hope that's what we are going to see."

Trump knows the important issues more than any of you. That's why he wants to build a wall, why he wants to deport illegal aliens, why he wants to enforce US immigration law, ban foreign Muslim immigration until we can vet applications to weed out Islamic Terrorists from entering the country, and fix our bad trade deals. That's why he understands what's wrong with NATO and how to fix it. That's why he understands the spending problems, no bid contracts, no accountability, and much more that if run under simple rules of responsibility would reduce government spending by a mile without cutting any services.

For McConnell to claim Trump doesn't know the issues is comical!

And to suggest he should operate from a "script" like an actor, that's ridiculous! I guess that's what you all have done to get your positions, but that is not what most Americans are looking for or want any more. We want a real deal.

Apparently not well enough to do a damn thing about them, artist. McConnell has been in the US Senate since he was first elected in 1984. 32 years.

That's right. Mitch McConnell has been a US Senator for 32 YEARS.

And in the course of that "service", he's not stopped 1 illegal alien from stealing a job, education or benefit and he's not deported 1 illegal alien that resulted in a net drop in illegal immigration. Immigration numbers have swelled and soared during Mitch McConnell's "service" in the US Senate, and he's not said no to 1 bad trade bill that I know of.

For this do-nothing to claim Trump doesn't know the issues is again comical, it's also tragic at the same time.

Mitch, our problems are obviously way over your head or you would have done something along the way of your 32 years of "service" to stop this travesty of open borders and free trade treason. But you haven't. When you drop the ball and force errors and hurt the team, you get pulled out of the game and plopped on the bench.

That's where you belong on the bench until Kentucky realizes you're part of the problem, not the solution.

So it's time for YOU, not Trump, to follow a script. You sit down and shut up unless you have something glowing and positive to say about the people's choice for the Republican candidate for President of the United States. You can say "The people have spoken, they trust Trump, they like his track record of achievements, his business knowledge, his toughness, and his commitment to change policies and solve these problems the rest of US of so far not been able or willing to do. I totally support Donald Trump for President and whatever he says because he has valid reason behind everything he says and just because the media chooses to ignore those reasons and go off on liberal tangents doesn't matter, what's matter is Trump is the leader of the Republican Party and we're all in to follow his lead to take US to the promised land."

Now all you cowards memorize that, write it down on a card and when the media asks you about Trump, you either read it or recite it if your memories are still good enough to actually memorize a ditty and repeat it accurately.
