Los Angeles International Airport evacuated after shots reportedly fired

    By Michael Martinez, CNN
updated 1:04 PM EDT, Fri November 1, 2013

Emergency vehicles and workers responded after the airport terminal evacuation Friday.

(CNN) -- Parts of Los Angeles International Airport were being evacuated Friday morning after reports of shots being fired there, police said.

Airport officials said a police incident began about 9:30 a.m. at Terminal 3 at LAX, airport spokeswoman Nancy Suey Castles said.

Passenger Robert Perez, who was getting ready to fly Virgin Air, was taking a nap in the terminal when panic erupted, he told CNN affiliate KCAL/CBS.

"I heard a popping sound, and everybody was diving for cover," Perez told the station. "The TSA said there was a shooting in the terminal and evacuate the building."

At least 100 people came down a staircase. "Everybody started to panic," Perez said.

The passengers were directed to board a bus and were taken to a smaller terminal, he told the affiliate.

Shooting at LAX: TSA agent, alleged gunman wounded

By Richard Winton and Alicia BanksNovember 1, 2013, 9:43 a.m.

A Transportation Security Administration agent and a suspect were wounded in a shooting at Los Angeles International Airport on Friday morning, sources told the Los Angeles Times.

Law enforcement officers were flooding the airport, authorities said, and terminals 2 and 3 were evacuated.

Tory Belleci of the television show Mythbusters tweeted: "Heard gun shots then everyone starting running for the door. Not sure if anyone was hurt. #LAX."

TV footage showed dozens of offficers swarming the airport. Images also showed a law enforcement officer being treated by paramedics. He appeared to be alert. Another officer had a bloody hand.

In response to the shooting at LAX, New York airports are increasing
their “high-visibility heavy-weapon patrol” so there is an increased “display of heavy weapons.” The effort is aimed at deterring copycats.
