Senate Dems Attempt to Block Trump From Using Defense Money to Build the Wall

A group of senate Democrats have filed an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) that would prevent President Donald Trump from using defense money to build a wall along the southern border.
The effort is being lead by Illinois Senator Dick Durbin and has support from Senators Tom Udall, Patrick Leahy, Brian Schatz, Jon Tester and Chris Murphy.
“The Democratic amendment would also prohibit Trump from using national defense funds authorized between the 2015 and 2019 fiscal years as part of the NDAA, which outlines broad policy and spending guidelines for the Pentagon,” the Hill reports.
In February, President Trump declared a state of emergency on the border which would free him to use defense money for the project without Congressional approval.
“The Senate’s bill does currently include the administration’s request for $3.6 billion to “back fill” money the White House diverted from the military construction account as part of his national emergency declaration to build part of the U.S.-Mexico border wall. It does not include the administration’s request for an additional $3.6 billion in wall funding,” the hill report continued.
Last week, the House Armed Services Committee upheld a Democrat proposal to block Pentagon counterdrug funds from being used for wall construction.
The Senate NDAA, and the many amendments being filed by senators, are expected to go up for debate this week.
