Senate Dems block anti-sanctuary city bill

Senate Democrats on Tuesday blocked a Republican-backed bill that would crack down on so-called sanctuary cities by threatening to withhold funds to local governments that don't cooperate with federal immigration officials.

The bill failed on a 54-45 vote. It needed 60 to advance.

The Stop Sanctuary Cities Act became a lightning rod issue ahead of the vote, as GOP sponsors tried to peel off just a few Democrats to support it while Democratic leaders blasted the legislation as counterproductive. The White House issued a formal veto threat Tuesday morning, while the chamber's top Democrat tried to discredit the measure by calling it "The Donald Trump Act."

But GOP backers cast the legislation as a critical first step toward reining in the exploding, and risky, practice of cities and counties ignoring federal immigration law.

"Sanctuary cities and the associated violent crimes by illegal immigrants are reaching a critical point, and we cannot wait any longer to take action to protect Americans here at home," sponsor Sen. David Vitter, R-La., said in a statement.

The bill was considered months after a young woman's murder in San Francisco allegedly at the hands of an illegal immigrant touched off a national debate over immigration law.

Vitter had urged colleagues to "remember Kate Steinle's vicious murder and the tens of thousands of crimes committed by illegal immigrants within our borders."

Steinle, 32, was killed July 1 while walking with her dad along a San Francisco pier. The suspect, Juan Francisco Lopez-Sanchez, had a felony record and had been deported five times -- but despite a federal immigration detainer request, the city sheriff released him once an old marijuana charge was dropped. San Francisco is among hundreds of so-called sanctuary cities that do not cooperate fully with federal immigration officials

The White House, though, claimed in a written statement that the bill "fails to offer comprehensive reforms needed to fix the Nation's broken immigration laws and undermines current Administration efforts to remove the most dangerous convicted criminals and to work collaboratively with State and local law enforcement agencies."

According to the White House, it would "essentially turn State and local law enforcement into Federal immigration law enforcement officials, in certain circumstances."

Only two Democrats voted Tuesday to advance the bill, Sens. Joe Donnelly of Indiana and Joe Manchin of West Virginia. Illinois Sen. Mark Kirk was the only Republican to vote "no."

The legislation would have made it illegal for local governments to ignore immigration-related detainers -- federal requests to notify them before releasing an illegal immigrant so they can take custody -- and to bar local officials from sharing immigration information with federal agents.

The bill called for withholding certain federal funding to any local governments that flout the policy.

The issue, though, became a political football not only on the presidential campaign trail but on Capitol Hill.

In advance of the vote, Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid said on the floor:

"This vile legislation might as well be called 'The Donald Trump Act.' Like the disgusting and outrageous language championed by Donald Trump, this legislation paints all immigrants as 'criminals and rapists.'"

As Congress stalled on the sanctuary city matter, some state governments already are taking action. North Carolina lawmakers recently voted to make their state the first prohibiting such policies at the local government level.

And shame on Lindsey Graham for not showing up to vote and shame on Mark Kirk for voting against it.

Wow, have liberals in this country lost all common sense? Everyone in this country, regardless of political affiliation, should have pushed hard for this bill! Personally, I made a couple calls and sent emails in support of the bill.

The Cities behind sanctuary for illegal aliens have officials on the take with the drug cartels and obviously so are many members of Congress.

This outcome was expected. The Dems will pay a price for this in the next elections.

If anybody has been following what is happening with the Muslim invasion of Europe they know it is virtually identical with our Mexican and other aliens invasion here, including the camouflage of compassion for the down trodden, government deception and news media propaganda to hide the truth from native Europeans.

Sweden, once peaceful clean, safe Sweden is the rape capitol of Europe second in the world only to some third world country I cant remember. And of course, there is big time everything crime. Sweden will soon cease to be European. Does that remind anybody of California? Gang rapes are common which was once unheard of in Sweden. And it isn’t the native Swedes doing the rapes etc. Germany will probably cease to exist as a Western country within 10 years unless there is a bloody rebellion by the native Germans which seem unlikely.

I defy anyone to tell me there is not a sick effort to destroy the Caucasian people by other Whites. A self imposed genocide. I do not think anything like that has ever happened before in history. By the way, this post would probably result in my being arrested for “hate speech” in Sweden, Germany, France and etc.


Patriots, the disaster in Europe is a harbinger of what will soon happen here in the USA if we do not fight our guts out to stop. At the rate things are going in the USA Donald Trump is probably our last chance to avoid the European tragedy. If Trump looses we will have a choice-- submit to despotism or massive civil disobedience, pray to God violence can be avoided.

I was hopeful, out of fear from constituent repercussion, more than 2 Senate Democrats would step up and support the bill.

Illinois Republican Sen. Mark Kirk teamed up with the vast majority of Senate Democrats to block a bill Tuesday that would crack down on sanctuary cities. He was the only Republican to vote against the measure.

The bill would increase penalties for illegal immigrants who return to the U.S. after they’re deported, and would threaten to withhold funds from cities that refuse to cooperate with federal immigration enforcement agents.

All but two Democrats and Kirk blocked a vote on the bill Tuesday, which fell six votes short of the 60 it needed to proceed to the floor. Democratic senators Joe Donnelly, representing Indiana, and Joe Manchin, representing West Virginia, voted with Republicans in support of the bill.

“Confronting a crime problem in a city like Chicago requires more resources, not fewer resources, for law enforcement to keep our kids away from gangs,” Kirk told The Daily Caller News Foundation, referring to the millions of dollars the sanctuary cities in his state would lose in federal funds if the bill passed.

The Center for Immigration Studies, a nonprofit research group opposed to increased immigration, identified Champagne County in central Illinois, Cook County near Chicago and the city of Chicago as sanctuary cities in a new interactive map published in October.

The number of these U.S. cities, counties and states that refuse to prosecute illegal immigrants or cooperate with federal enforcement is increasing, along with the number of criminal releases, the Center for Immigration Studies recently reported.

Roughly 340 jurisdictions are hindering immigration enforcement, and together these sanctuaries are releasing about 1,000 criminal aliens per month.

On the eve of the sanctuary cities vote, Kirk also promoted a gun control bill he is co-sponsoring with four Democrats. Illinois families “shouldn’t have to live in fear of illegal guns in the hands of criminals,” he tweeted.

South Carolina Republican Senator and presidential candidate Lindsey Graham was noticeably absent from the vote, but a spokesman told The DCNF he would have supported the motion to proceed had he been in Washington.

“It was abundantly clear Senate Democrats were not going to allow this important issue to move forward,” he told The DCNF, pointing out one vote wouldn’t have changed the outcome regardless.
