Sheldon Adelson Supports Donald Trump: He ‘Will Be Good for Israel’

TEL AVIV – Now that Donald Trump is the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, casino magnate Sheldon Adelson, a top GOP donor, voiced support for his fellow billionaire.

“Yes, I’m a Republican, he’s a Republican, “Adelson told the New York Times in a brief interview. “He’s our nominee. Whoever the nominee would turn out to be, any one of the 17 — he was one of the 17. He won fair and square.”

Adelson, who has remained mostly neutral for the past few months of nominating competitions, made the comments on the sidelines of a gala dinner for the World Values Network, a Jewish organization run by Rabbi Shmuley Boteach.

According to the Times, Adelson said he believes Trump “will be good for Israel.”

The newspaper reported:

Mr. Adelson said on Thursday that he had spoken to Mr. Trump recently, but did not elaborate about the timing or nature of their communication. He told another journalist that he thinks that Mr. Trump “will be good for Israel.”

Mr. Adelson’s voice of support was particularly notable given that the Republican Jewish Coalition, a group he has funded heavily, suggested after Mr. Trump became the presumptive nominee that it is focusing mostly on preserving Republican gains in the House and the Senate.

GOP mega-donor and Las Vegas casino magnate Sheldon Adelson is blasting conservatives in the party who are opposed to comprehensive amnesty legislation.

The Washington Post reports that Adelson, who spent nearly $100 million in 2012 and will likely spend a hefty sum in the 2016 GOP presidential primary, “upbraided many in the GOP for their opposition to legalizing millions” of illegal immigrants. He reportedly said that without a “comprehensive overhaul” that would legalize all of the country’s illegal immigrants, the nation would not be “the America that I’m proud to live in.”

Adelson made his remarks while addressing the Israeli American Council (IAC) in Washington, D.C., along with liberal billionaire Haim Saban, a Hillary Clinton ally. This is not the first time that Adelson has lobbied for comprehensive amnesty legislation.

“Let’s start by instituting a process in which all undocumented immigrants receive permits to legally work here,” Adelson wrote in a Politico op-ed earlier this year while the country was facing a flood of illegal immigrant children from South America. “Let’s provide them with the opportunity to get driver’s licenses and bank accounts—simple things that we all take for granted.” He also joined billionaires Warren Buffett and Bill Gates in calling for an unlimited number of high-tech guest-worker visas in a New York Times op-ed.

House Republican leaders have expressed a willingness to work on an immigration bill in the GOP-led Congress, while President Barack Obama, who has vowed to enact executive amnesty by the end of the year, said that he felt time has not run out even on a lame-duck amnesty bill. Conservative opponents of amnesty, citing a nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office report, have emphasized that massive amnesty legislation and awarding of guest-worker permits would only lower wages and reduce employment opportunities for U.S.-born Americans and legal immigrants already in the country.

He's endorsed a winner now, so his political luck is going to change. Whether Adelson's bad stances, stupid positions and wrong attitudes will take a turn to the better, who knows, who cares. RNC should take his money. It's my understanding Trump isn't going to accept donations in the General Election from big donors, instead he's going to raise money for the RNC to help down-ballot races and fund the activities that the RNC does to help elect candidates including Trump. He may have to raise some for his own campaign when it gets into the heavy but maybe by that time we can individually send in small donations that would amount to enough to fund much of it, the way the Bernie Supporters did with small donations.

Facing a prospective tab of more than $1 billion to finance a general-election run for the White House, Donald Trump reversed course Wednesday and said he would actively raise money to ensure his campaign has the resources to compete with Hillary Clinton’s fundraising juggernaut.

His campaign also is beginning to work with the Republican National Committee to set up a joint fundraising committee after his last two rivals—Texas Sen. Ted Cruz and Ohio Gov. John Kasich—dropped out in the wake of Mr. Trump’s resounding Indiana win on Tuesday.

“I’ll be putting up money, but won’t be completely self-funding,” the presumptive Republican nominee said in an interview Wednesday. Mr. Trump, who had largely self-financed his successful primary run, added that he would create a “world-class finance organization.” The campaign will tap his expansive personal Rolodex and a new base of supporters who aren’t on party rolls, two Trump advisers said.

The new plan represents a shift for Mr. Trump, who has for months portrayed his Republican opponents as “puppets” for relying on super PACs and taking contributions from wealthy donors that he said came with strings attached.

Mr. Trump’s creation of a joint fundraising committee comes eight months behind that of his likely general-election foe, Mrs. Clinton. She and the Democratic National Committee reached an agreement last August to create the Hillary Victory Fund, which raised more than $60 million through the end of March. Of that, about $13 million has been transferred to Mrs. Clinton’s campaign, while nearly $6 million has gone to the DNC.

The former secretary of state raised more than $213 million for her campaign through the end of April, on top of more than $67 million raised by her allied super PACs.

On Wednesday, her campaign emailed a donation appeal with the line: “16 Republicans tried and failed to stop Trump—now it’s up to us.”

For his part, Mr. Trump lent his campaign $36 million of the $47 million he spent on the primaries through March, with the rest coming mostly from small donations.

The New York real-estate developer, known for operating on a tight budget in a primary where he enjoyed more than $2 billion in free media attention, is also likely to implement a business plan that may be less costly than traditional political campaigns, a senior aide said.

Mr. Trump also plans to actively help the Republican Party and other GOP candidates with fundraising through events, direct-mail and online appeals, an aide said.

Beginning to actively fundraise while a super PAC backing him also ramps up activity means the billionaire will no longer have that line of attack to use against his Democratic opponent. The move is also likely to put off some Trump supporters, many of whom have said his reliance mostly on his own funds makes them trust him more than other politicians.
The Trump campaign was rushing Wednesday to put its finance team in place because it hadn’t expected to focus on general-election fundraising until after the California primary June 7. That is when Mr. Trump had expected Mr. Cruz and Mr. Kasich to suspend their campaigns.

Already, the Trump campaign has raised about $12 million from donors, largely from contributions of $200 or less—nearly as much as Mr. Kasich had raised in total. Though Mr. Trump hasn’t solicited donations, his campaign website features a large, red “Donate” button, and the organization frequently texts supporters a link to its merchandise store, whose proceeds support his candidacy.

“Donald generated such broad-based support that we’re looking to tap into existing party members as well as the new people that have joined the party for him,” said Steven Mnuchin, chief executive of Dune Capital Management LP, named as the Trump campaign national finance chair, on Wednesday.

As the general-election candidate, Mr. Trump will set up a “joint fundraising agreement” with the RNC under which part of the proceeds raised go to the party’s convention, RNC and his campaign operations.

Mr. Trump will help raise money for the fund, as well as likely make his own donation to it, a Trump campaign official said.

There are limits on how much of the money raised by the committee can be used to directly help his candidacy.

The committee can’t transfer individual donations that are higher than that $2,700 cap to Mr. Trump’s campaign, although it allows donors to write larger checks meant to benefit the campaign and the party.

The party can accept checks of up to $334,000 but only $33,400 that can be used for explicit candidate advocacy. The rest must be earmarked for conventions, headquarters maintenance and the cost of election recounts.

In 2012, Mitt Romney—who would become his party’s nominee—began raising money jointly with the RNC early that April. That fund had already collected $22 million at this point in the race, and raised a total of $137 million by the end of June.

President Barack Obama spent $721.4 million on his 2012 campaign, on top of $292.3 million spent by the party and $131.3 million spent by outside groups. Mr. Romney spent $449.5 million and benefited from $386.2 million in party spending and $418.6 million from outside groups.

At the time of its creation, some top fundraisers for Mr. Romney expressed concern that the committee had been formed too late, since President Barack Obama had begun jointly fundraising with the DNC the previous fall.

“It takes a while to get the apparatus in place and then to get the checks rolling,” said Brian Ballard, a Florida lobbyist and member of Mr. Romney’s national finance team in 2012. He said he was glad efforts were beginning now for the 2016 race “and not after California.”

Mr. Ballard said the Trump campaign has begun reaching out to fundraisers in Florida. “The Republican fundraising infrastructure will be put into full swing here pretty soon,” he said.

Further complicating Mr. Trump’s strategic shift is his late start in wooing donors, many of whom he had criticized for months. Two major backers of Mr. Cruz said in interviews Wednesday that they hadn’t heard from the Trump campaign, though they were open to backing the businessman.

Still, that may not prove to be a problem for Mr. Trump. Several wealthy donors have already said they would back him if he became the nominee, and billionaire Home Depot Inc. co-founder Ken Langone said Wednesday he was “all in” for Mr. Trump. In addition, the candidate has said his wealthy friends are prepared to cut checks.

The super PAC backing Mr. Trump, meanwhile, is also seeking to ramp up its fundraising operation. Eric Beach, Great America PAC’s fundraiser, said super PAC officials have received about 75 calls, mostly from donors, since Mr. Cruz exited the race Tuesday evening. The group plans to add dozens of staffers and announce new members of its finance committee in the next weeks.

In an interview with MSNBC on Wednesday, Mr. Trump called Ed Rollins, the super PAC’s newly hired co-chairman, “so tremendous” and said he would decide in the next week whether he would welcome the support of super PACs. The campaign cannot legally coordinate with the super PAC under federal campaign finance laws.

But Great America PAC, which has raised $1.2 million since January and last month launched a $1 million ad campaign, already feels it has the green light, Mr. Beach said. “We are the outside organization that’s going to help Trump win the election,” he said.

In a conference call with donors on Wednesday that also featured former presidential candidate Ben Carson, Mr. Rollins said the super PAC will actively seek to fill in holes in the campaign. “Usually a super PAC is frosting on a cake,” he said. “We’re going to be part of the cake.”

He said the Trump campaign, which he called “more than adequate,” was missing several components of a traditional operation, such as an opposition-research arm and a polling expert, areas the super PAC would aim to cover. The group plans to hire an opposition-research team in the next two weeks.

Mr. Rollins also stressed the avalanche of cash that will soon be unleashed against Mr. Trump by Mrs. Clinton’s campaign and her friendly super PAC, Priorities USA Action. “The Democratic world is going to raise an enormous sum of money,” he said.

“They’re licking their chops.”

Mrs. Clinton holds frequent high-dollar fundraisers, including two on Sunday in Michigan, one of which cost between $50,000 and $100,000 to attend, according to a Clinton aide. Her campaign also has 380 “bundlers”—major donors who have raised at least $100,000.

On Tuesday night, after Mr. Cruz suspended his campaign Mrs. Clinton tweeted: “There’s only one candidate left who can stop a Trump presidency,” and included a solicitation for donations.

This is good. I'm glad. He shouldn't have to risk any more loss of business or money to help US save our country. He apparently will continue to put money in, I hope it's not much, and can raise money from honest decent people who support his policies.
