The sign language interpreter who stood alongside world leaders at Nelson Mandela’s memorial service and translated their words for deaf viewers was nothing but a big phony.

According to the Associated Press, the man — who was seen standing in close proximity to leaders like President Obama — has now been caught red-handed as a “fake.”

Bruno Druchen, the national director of the Deaf Federation of South Africa, said the unnamed fellow ”was moving his hands around but there was no meaning in what he used his hands for.”

It’s unclear how the man was able to gain access to the event and why he was able to shoot sign-language blanks for the entire service.

The Mandela cover-up unravels

It appears that AIM and blogger Trevor Loudon are among the few sources highlighting the official statement of the South African Communist Party (SACP) confirming that Nelson Mandela was a high-ranking member. SACP deputy general secretary Solly Mapaila is quoted by a South African magazine as saying it was denied at the time for "political reasons."

The communist Workers World Party, which supports North Korea, has also reprinted the official SACP statement about Mandela. The communists are proud of Mandela and what he accomplished. His false claims of being a non-communist fooled South Africa and the world (except for his domestic and international comrades who were in on the secret). The official SACP statement includes these words: "At his arrest in August 1962, Nelson Mandela was not only a member of the then underground South African Communist Party, but was also a member of our Party's Central Committee."

Politicians lie, but this was a whopper, designed for the purpose of turning South Africa and its strategic materials over to the communists. The perfect front man, Mandela had always denied being a party member and, for the benefit of foreign audiences, publicly rejected Marxism as a "foreign ideology" as recently as a few years ago. It appears that was just a ploy to keep the foreign aid coming. South Africa has been among the top ten recipients of U.S. foreign aid, getting close to $500 million in fiscal year 2013.

Now that we know what's going on, what will we do about it? Three American presidents – Obama, Clinton, and George W. Bush – are going to South Africa for his state funeral on December 15. Obama has ordered American flags to remain at half-staff in his honor until sunset on December 9. The con will continue. Still, the facts matter.

Many in the media are calling Mandela a "political prisoner" when he served prison time. But on the Fox News "Special Report" show on December 5, Jesse Jackson admitted Mandela told him that he was planning bombings of hospitals and schools in South Africa when he got caught. That is why Mandela went to prison. He ran Umkhonto we Sizwe, the terrorist wing of the African National Congress (ANC) and South African Communist Party. The white minority made a deal to release him because they feared for their lives against a Soviet-sponsored terrorist onslaught that was documented in 1982 Senate hearings entitled "The Role of the Soviet Union, Cuba, and East Germany in Fomenting Terrorism in Southern Africa."

One of the witnesses before those hearings was Bartholomew Hlapane, a member of the African National Congress's national executive committee and the South African Communist Party's central committee. Bartholomew, who described SACP domination of the ANC, was assassinated in his home in South Africa on December 16, 1982, by an Umkhonto we Sizwe assassination squad. The ANC later admitted to the crime.

President Obama condemned the Boston Islamic terror bombings, saying, "Any time bombs are used to target innocent civilians it is an act of terror." But that is what Mandela was orchestrating in South Africa. And Mandela is Obama's role model. Apparently, it was okay to kill whites in the name of black majority rule.

So how is that working out for the blacks, the supposed beneficiaries of Mandela's revolution?

WikiLeaks is usually a source that our media trust. But little attention was paid to information from WikiLeaks demonstrating that the South African government is now resorting to "forced removals, violence, [and] intimidation" against poor blacks demanding their rights. Referring to a group of black shack dwellers known by the initials AbM, a U.S. embassy cable from 2010 said: "While the ANC claims to be making efforts to clean up slums and provide the poor with adequate housing, AbM leadership claims intimidation and anti-democratic tactics are used against its members by the ruling party."

It's true that Mandela failed to authorize a bloodbath of the minority whites once the black majority took power. But that decision recognizes, as the Chinese communists did, that socialism doesn't work. The whites had to be tolerated because of their economic expertise. However, whites are now getting killed regularly in the "new" South Africa, and the country is being featured on "Genocide Watch" because of the racist dangers there. A spin-off from the ruling African National Congress, the Economic Freedom Fighter (EFF) movement, held a rally in October in South Africa featuring banners saying the "Honeymoon is over for white people in South Africa." The group is openly Marxist-Leninist.

Interestingly, a column in the far-left Huffington Post hints at the truth, noting that Mandela "spent much of his life as a radical Marxist allied with global communist luminaries...."

In addition to the evidence of Mandela's secret membership in the Communist Party, those "global communist luminaries" deserve some attention. He admired Fidel Castro, praised his "brother in arms" Yasser Arafat, and was a big fan of Libya's Muammar Gaddafi. He was awarded the Soviet Union's International Lenin Peace Prize. Russian President Vladimir Putin congratulated Nelson Mandela on his 95th birthday in July and "gave a high assessment to Nelson Mandela's role in developing friendly Russian-South African relations, which have now reached the level of a strategic partnership." Indeed, Russia and South Africa have become strategic partners in the BRICS group. BRICS refers to Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.

An objective source of some of Mandela's famous quotations is the book In the Words of Nelson Mandela, edited by Jennifer Crwys-Williams. They include:

• "Islam has enriched and become part of Africa; in turn, Islam was transformed and Africa became part of it."
• "The people of Libya shared the trenches with us in our struggle for freedom" (spoken at a banquet in Tripoli, Libya, in 1997).
• "He [Muammar Gaddafi] helped us at a time when we were all alone, when those who are now saying we should not come here were helping our enemies" (spoken at the start of his 1997 trip to Libya).
• "My brother leader" (referring to Gaddafi).

Gaddafi was the terrorist leader who killed 189 Americans, most of them college students, by bombing Pan Am 103. The year was 1988. Gaddafi was also behind the La Belle bombing in Berlin in April of 1986. This killed two Americans and a Turkish woman and injured well over 200 persons, including 41 Americans.

In a story about Mandela's 1997 visit to Libya, The New York Times noted: "Although Mr. Mandela had twice visited Libya before, this is his first trip since becoming President [of South Africa] in 1994. No Western leader has visited Libya since the sanctions were imposed after Colonel Qaddafi refused to turn over suspects in the 1988 bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland."

But Mandela was thankful Gaddafi gave his terrorist movement weapons. He didn't care about the terrorism that took American lives. Later, Gaddafi renounced terrorism, paid restitution to the families of Pan Am 103 victims, and gave up his own nuclear program. Nevertheless, Obama authorized his overthrow and he was killed by a mob in Libya.

Bill O'Reilly said on his Fox News show that Mandela "was a communist, all right? But he was a great man. What he did for his people was stunning. ... He was a great man, but he was a communist." Throwing out the word, without documenting it, leaves people without adequate information and O'Reilly vulnerable to the tired charge of "McCarthyism."

The notion of a good communist, considering the bloody history of the movement, seems absurd. But sadly, that is some of the best coverage of Mandela that we have seen.

The left's hero worship of Mandela – as well as of Obama – is to be expected. Strangely, similar coverage came from Breitbart News Senior Editor-at-Large Joel Pollak, who claimed Mandela "embraced constraints on his power," was a George Washington-type figure, a friend of Israel, opposed terrorism, and "did not turn his back on the United States and her ideals." He went on Mark Levin's radio show to repeat some of these dubious, and even ridiculous, claims.

Pollak quoted Mandela during his treason trial as saying, "I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities." Mandela also declared at the time that he was not a communist.

Now we know better. Or do we?

JOHANNESBURG (AP) - The man accused of faking sign interpretation while standing alongside world leaders like U.S. President Barack Obama at Nelson Mandela's memorial service said Thursday he saw "angels" at the event, has been violent in the past and suffers from schizophrenia.

Thamsanqa Jantjie said in a 45-minute interview with The Associated Press that his hallucinations began while he was interpreting and that he tried not to panic because there were "armed policemen around me." He added that he was once hospitalized in a mental health facility for more than one year.

Jantjie, who stood gesticulating three-feet (1 meter) from Obama and others who spoke at Tuesday's ceremony that was broadcast around the world, insisted that he was doing proper sign-language interpretation of the speeches of world leaders.
But he also apologized for his performance that has been dismissed by many sign-language experts as gibberish.

The statements by Jantjie raise serious security issues for Obama, other heads of state and U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon who made speeches at FNB Stadium in Soweto, Johannesburg's black township.

The ceremony honored Mandela, the anti-apartheid icon and former president who died on Dec. 5. "What happened that day, I see angels come to the stadium ... I start realizing that the problem is here. And the problem, I don't know the attack of this problem, how will it come. Sometimes I get violent on that place. Sometimes I will see things chasing me," Jantjie said.

"I was in a very difficult position," he added. "And remember those people, the president and everyone, they were armed, there was armed police around me. If I start panicking I'll start being a problem. I have to deal with this in a manner so that I mustn't embarrass my country."

Asked how often he had become violent, he said "a lot" while declining to provide details.

Contacted by telephone Thursday by AP, SA Interpreters, the organization that reportedly hired Jantjie to do the sign language interpreting at the memorial, declined to comment.

The man who used jibberish sign language at Nelson Mandela’s memorial service also used incoherent hand gestures to sign a notorious anti-white song sung last year by current South African President Jacob Zuma.

Thamsanqua Jantjie, 34, late said that he is schizophrenic and was hallucinating during the Mandela memorial speeches. The interpreter also admitted that he’d been prone to fits of violence in the past, an admission that was worrisome given his proximity to President Barack Obama and other world leaders.

According to NBC News, Jantjie has worked two other gigs on behalf of the African National Congress (ANC), South Africa’s majority party. He was paid $85 per diem for his work at the memorial, NBC reported.

One was an event where President Zuma led gatherers in “Kill the Boer,” an apartheid protest song that South African courts have ruled is hate speech.

Boer is an Afrikaans word for farmer and is often used to refer to whites. Thousands of South Africa’s white farmers have been murdered since the end of apartheid. Some have called this a form of genocide and claim that the song provokes racial violence.
Zuma and other ANC leaders have come under fire in the past for singing the song. The ANC largely defends the song as part of the history of its struggle against apartheid-era oppression.

But the hearing-impaired would not have understood Jantjie’s interpretation of the violent song, which contains lyrics like “We going to shoot them with the machine gun” and “You are a Boer, we are going to hit them and you are going to run.”

“He does not interpret a bit at the beginning where Zuma says ‘Come together all the winners,’” said Bencie Woll, director of the Deafness Cognition and Language Research Centre at University College, London. “As an interpreter, he should be interpreting everything said by the speaker. When he does sign, there is little evidence of any facial expression, just as in the Mandela clip.”

Woll said that while she cannot say whether Jantjie was using South African sign language, “Kill the Boer” has many iconic signs.
“I can identify SHOOT, RUN, WILL etc., and these are repeated throughout the various verses. All of what he does looks very inexpressive and mechanistic,” Woll told The Daily Caller News Foundation.

Jantjie, who stands as close to Zuma during the song as he did to Obama during his Mandela memorial speech, gestures sporadically during the song. He mimics what looks like someone firing a machine gun and also pumps his arms as if running, though he offers no signs for other song lyrics.

Jantjie’s fraudulent interpretations may be some of his least disturbing behavior. On Friday, eNCA.com reported that Jantjie was accused of murder in 2003. He also faced charges for kidnapping, theft, housebreaking and attempted murder. Jantjie was sentenced to three years in prison in the theft case, though there are no records to indicate whether he served the sentence, according to eNCA.

JOHANNESBURG – The bogus sign language interpreter at last week's Nelson Mandela memorial service was among a group of people who accosted two men found with a stolen television and burned them to death by setting fire to tires placed around their necks, one of the interpreter's cousins and three of his friends told The Associated Press Monday.
But Thamsanqa Jantjie never went to trial for the 2003 killings when other suspects did in 2006 because authorities determined he was not mentally fit to stand trial, said the four. They insisted on speaking anonymously because of the sensitivity of the fake signing fiasco, which has deeply embarrassed South Africa's government and prompted a high-level investigation into how it happened.
Their account of the killings matched a description of the crime and the outcome for Jantjie that he himself described in an interview published on Sunday by the Sunday Times newspaper of Johannesburg.
"It was a community thing, what you call mob justice, and I was also there," Jantjie told the newspaper.
Jantjie was not at his house Monday, and the cousin told AP Jantjie had been picked up by someone in a car Sunday and had not returned. His cellphone rang through to an automatic message saying Jantjie was not reachable.
Instead of standing trial, Jantjie was institutionalized for a period of longer than a year, the four said, and then returned to live in his poor township neighborhood on the outskirts of Soweto. At some point after that, they said, he started getting jobs doing sign language interpretation at events for the governing African National Congress Party.
Jantjie told the AP last week he has schizophrenia and hallucinated, seeing angels while gesturing incoherently just 3 feet away from President Barack Obama and other world leaders during the Tuesday ceremony at a Soweto stadium. Signing experts said his arm and hand movements were mere gibberish.
In the interview last Thursday, Jantjie said he had been violent in the past "a lot" but declined to provide more details and blamed his violence on his schizophrenia, for which he said he was institutionalized for 19 months in a period that included time during 2006. The cousin and the three friends said the "necklacing" killing of the suspected thieves occurred within a few hundred meters (yards) from Jantjie's tidy concrete home near ramshackle dwellings.
The four spoke to the AP on Monday in Jantjie's neighborhood, and one of the friends described himself as Jantjie's best friend.
Necklacing was a method of killing that was fairly common during the struggle against apartheid by blacks on blacks suspected of aiding the white government or belonging to opposing factions. The method was also used in tribal disputes in the 1980s and 1990s. While people who encounter suspect thieves in South Africa have been known to beat or kill them to mete out punishment, necklacing them has been rare.
An investigation is under way by South African officials to determine who hired Jantjie as the onstage interpreter at the Mandela memorial service and if and how he received security clearance. The officials have not said how long their investigation will take place, and reaching them for updates was difficult Monday, a public holiday in South Africa.
Four government departments involved in organizing the historic memorial service have distanced themselves from the hiring of Jantjie, telling the AP they had no contact with him. A fifth government agency, the Department of Public Works, declined to comment and referred all inquiries about Jantjie to the office of South Africa's top government spokeswoman, who has only said a "comprehensive report" will eventually be released.
Jantjie told the AP he was hired for the event by an interpretation company that has used him on a freelance basis for years. The address that Jantjie provided for the company was occupied by a different company that is not involved in interpreting for the deaf.
The owner of the company was identified by the Sunday Times as Bantubahle Xozwa, who heads a religious and traditional affairs unit of the ANC.
Xozwa told the newspaper that Jantjie was an administrator in his company, South African Interpreters but "is not an interpreter" because he was "was disqualified years ago on the basis of his health."
"He was interpreting at the memorial service in his personal capacity," Xozwa said. The ANC has said it had no role in hiring Jantjie for the memorial service, but has acknowledged using him at party events in the past.
Two ANC spokesmen and a spokeswoman did not answer their cellphones on Monday, a public holiday, when AP tried to reach them for comment. A number listed for Xozwa in Johannesburg rang unanswered.
The Deaf Federation of South Africa has said it filed a complaint with the ANC about bogus signing by Jantjie at a previous event where South African President Jacob Zuma was present.
"We will follow up the reported correspondence that has supposedly been sent to us in this regard and where necessary act on it," the ANC said in a statement last week.
The AP was unable to verify the existence of the school where Jantjie said he studied signing for a year. An online search for the school, which Jantjie said was called Komani and located in Eastern Cape Province, turned up nothing. Advocates for the deaf said they have never heard of the school and said there are no known sign language institutes in the province.
The Star newspaper of Johannesburg reported Friday that Jantjie said he studied sign language interpretation in Britain at the "University of Tecturers." A British charity that awards qualifications for deaf and deaf-blind communications techniques said it had never heard of the university.

Signifying Nothing: The Most Profound Moment in 2013

On December 10th of 2013, Thamsanqa Jantjie stood in front of a worldwide audience, at the funeral of Nelson Mandela, next to U.S. President Barack Obama, and waved his arms about nonsensically, pretending or attempting to interpret Obama’s speech for the the deaf. It was the most profound moment of the year––perhaps of the new century.

Jantjie himself, according to available reportage, is just some guy. Apparently he has mental health issues, but experts don’t seem to be buying his claim that he was having a schizophrenic episode. He has a criminal record, but, thankfully and luckily, he seems to have had no intent to harm President Obama or anyone else. He’s now claiming to “expose the system,” but in the light of everything else he has said and done since the incident, this is unlikely. The simple truth seems to be that a mentally ill man lied his way through bureaucracy and security so he could get onto a big stage with important people at an important event.

But neither Jantjie’s profile nor his intentions make any difference to the powerful message he unwittingly sent.

Consider the picture again. First, it was Nelson Mandela’s funeral. Nelson Mandela: the symbol of the end of apartheid, a man deemed beyond reproach by the larger western contemporary culture. A South African hero. A world hero.
.
Second, several powerful people took the stage, but none more powerful than Barack Obama. Barack Obama: the first black president of the United States, speaking at Nelson Mandela’s funeral. The socio-political symbolism was potent.
.
Finally, as a signer, Jantjie not only stood as a representative of the deaf community, but also the entire world’s special needs community. Even though he was an unknown civilian, his role that day was important.
.
Despite all this, Jantjie stood there and waved his arms about nonsensically. You can see why many were offended. Race and special needs issues affect us all. But the offensiveness of it is precisely what made the effectiveness of it. By interpreting such an occasion into nonsense, Jantjie not only undermined political power, but he also undermined political correctness. It was a great reminder that no matter how important these things are to us, they are increasingly used to silence and control people. Jantjie took all of this sound and fury and signified it into nothing. That is stunningly beautiful. Long-dead dadaists experienced nirvana.

Naturally, the White House was more offended than anyone. They released a statement about how we should all be reflecting on the president’s weighty speech instead of the actions of the interpreter. Too late. Obama’s words have already been forgotten. Ask people about Mandela’s funeral, and many will bring up the infamous selfie. Others will bring up the fake signer. Nobody will bring up Obama’s remarks.
.
But the actions of the interpreter were more relevant than anything Obama said. (And, let’s face it, the speech was the real selfie.) It was a classic clown and king moment. A powerless man––perhaps even an idiot––stood next to the most self-important president in recent history and used nonsense to speak truth to power.

And the truth is this: the individual must take back power from any and all sacred cows that have usurped it. Nothing––not a cultural hero, not a president, not a serious issue, not a big idea––is more important than the individual’s expression of liberty. Nothing.
