Investigators worked at the scene. — John Gibbins / Twitter @JohnGibbinsUTSD ESCONDIDO — San Diego police officers were involved in a fatal shooting Wednesday night in Escondido, and a bomb squad was at the scene for hours after the man's vehicle was found to contain weapons and pipe bombs.
The shooting was reported at 8:06 p.m. on Del Lago Boulevard at the intersection of Avenida Magoria, Escondido police Lt. Neal Griffin said Thursday.
A San Diego police surveillance team was tailing the known felon and were trying to get him to an area where they could take him into custody, Griffin said.
He realized he was being followed and as he tried to flee he crashed his red Ford sport-utility vehicle into a concrete wall.
The man had a gun slung around his neck and he raised the weapon at the officers, who opened fire, Griffin said.
The Metro Arson Strike Team's bomb squad found seven pipe bombs in the SUV and worked through the night to render them safe. Four of the bombs had to be detonated, Griffin said.

  He said officers found another gun in his SUV as well as a large amount of ammunition.
  Shortly after the incident Wednesday night, San Diego police Lt. Kevin Mayer said that multiple officers from San Diego were involved, including members of a gang team.
  No officers were injured, police said.
  The surrounding area, which includes numerous small businesses, including a McDonald's restaurant, was cordoned off following the discovery of the pipe bombs. The large area includes a park and ride lot at Del Lago Boulevard and Via Rancho Parkway. That lot became a police command post.
  Many of the businesses had already closed when the incident occurred. Griffin said a handful of homes had been evacuated.
  The name of the man who was shot and killed has not been released. Investigators were expected to be at the scene throughout Thursday morning.

Police detonate bombs at scene of deadly shooting

ESCONDIDO (CBS 8 ) – A wild police takedown in Escondido began with an officer-involved shooting Wednesday night and stretched late into the night as bomb techs searched the suspect's vehicle for possible explosives.
An unidentified suspect was killed in the shooting which happened around 8:00 p.m. Wednesday on Avenida Magoria near Del Lago Boulevard and involved multiple San Diego Police Department officers, according to police.
Neighbors report hearing dozens of gunshots as a shootout involving officers broke out in the streets.
The driver of a red Ford SUV collided with a wall separating the scene from a row of homes. Witnesses say more than a half-dozen vehicles converged on vehicle and the suspect, who appeared to have been hit with an unknown number of bullets. Police say officers noticed devices inside the vehicle that looked like pipe bombs.

The bomb squad was called in and a nearby shopping center was closed down while technicians sent robots to examine the vehicle for possible explosives.
Robots were initially sent to examine the vehicle around 9:30 p.m., but by 11:15 p.m. police say their search had uncovered seven pipe bombs and two guns. Then, the surrounding area was evacuated, while the bomb squad began detonating several pipe bomb-like devices individually.
San Diego Police did not offer further details about how police got involved in the initial gunfight with suspect, or why the man was being monitored by law enforcement.
A tarp was on the ground near the SUV covering what appeared to be the body of the shot suspect. As of this report, the identity of the SUV's driver remained unconfirmed by law enforcement.

The Escondido Police Department Homicide Unit will handle the investigation moving forward, according to the San Diego Police Department.

  ESCONDIDO, Calif. - On Friday, San Diego police said they plan to release more details about the man who allegedly tried to fire at officers Wednesday night in Escondido and had several explosives in his SUV.
  10News was at the scene moments after that man was shot and killed by police.
  Police are releasing very few details about the man who was behind the wheel of the red Ford Explorer, but when we ran the license plate, we came across the owner's son, who has an extensive criminal history.
  San Diego police discovered and detonated seven pipe bombs inside of the SUV. When 10News ran the license plate of the vehicle, it went back to the father of a William Daniel Mayes.
  10News learned that Mayes had two criminal cases linked to him involving arson, in which he set fire to numerous cars around San Diego County, while high on drugs.
  Police said when officers tried to pull over the driver of the SUV, he took off.
  Shortly after the driver crashed into a wall, police shot him dead.
  Police claimed he pointed a homemade rifle at them.
  Business owners in the area were disturbed by the incident.
  "Tutors were coming and going, children were coming and going from my front door and we were literally in the line of fire,” said Tutoring Club Director Lucy Bjerling.
  Bjerling said she saw police waiting for the man in the red Ford Explorer for nearly an hour, but said they never warned her.
  Escondido police are investigating the incident and said that was not supposed to happen, but that the man who police shot dead threw officers a curve.
  It is still not known what he planned to do with the pipe bombs, or whether he ever shot at police.
  No bystanders were hurt.
  10News went to the home of William Mayes' father Thursday night.
  While the man who lived there said he was not connected to this case, a neighbor told 10News police swarmed the complex Wednesday night and throughout the day Thursday.

Convicted arsonist pointed homemade gun at officers trying to corral him for arrest

ESCONDIDO — A felon driving an explosives-laden vehicle who was fatally shot by San Diego police in Escondido earlier this week was wanted in a vicious attack against his father, authorities said Friday.
William Daniel Mayes — Facebook photo William “Danny” Mayes, 37, had been identified as a suspect in an elder abuse case two weeks earlier and was being lured by police to a Park and Ride in Escondido Wednesday when he made a violent attempt to avoid arrest, police said.
Mayes raised a homemade shotgun at officers during the standoff, and five San Diego police officers opened fire, killing him, said Escondido police Lt. Neal Griffin.
San Diego police began investigating Mayes on May 18, when his father reported an attack, said San Diego police Capt. Terry McManus.
The 65-year-old father told officers it wasn’t the first time his son had abused him, and that he was extremely fearful.
On Tuesday, an unidentified person came forward and warned police that Mayes had “critical knowledge” of how to make explosives and may have pipe bombs.
Investigators got a search warrant for Mayes’ Mira Mesa home on Capricorn Way the next day and devised a plan on how to safely arrest him without jeopardizing neighbors and officers.
They decided to lure him to the Park and Ride on Del Lago Boulevard, an area that is somewhat elevated and not hemmed in by buildings. It was also an area he frequented, affording a lesser chance of raising his suspicions.
The plan started out smoothly, with several undercover officers following Mayes’ maroon Ford SUV. But just before he was to make a right turn into the lot at 8 p.m., he noticed he was being tailed and sped off.
He lost control and crashed into a concrete wall, and an officer blocked him in with a car, said Griffin.
Mayes stayed inside the SUV and raised a single-shot, 12-gauge homemade shotgun, which was slung around his neck. Five officers opened fire, mortally wounding him, Griffin said.
“There is no doubt in my professional opinion that he had every intention of firing at the officers,” Griffin said.
San Diego’s Metro Arson Strike Team bomb squad, which was staged nearby, made a methodical search of Mayes’ SUV and discovered it was filled with explosives.
The vehicle contained seven pipe bombs, nine “crickets,” or CO2 cartridges that explode when filled with gunpowder, and a pyrotechnic device. Some of the smaller devices were found hidden on his body, said bomb squad Capt. John Wood.
As the bomb technicians attempted to render the explosives safe, four pipe bombs detonated, Wood said.
Authorities display two of the homemade guns found in William Mayes' SUV. Debbi Baker Mayes also had four homemade weapons — two big and two small — three of which were loaded. The firearms were cobbled together from pieces of metal, pipe and gun parts.
Police said it doesn’t appear Mayes returned fire at officers with the shotgun. Griffin said the gun would have to be reloaded and fired in a lab to compare ballistics — something police don’t want to attempt for safety reasons.
“It’s a very dangerous weapon to even handle,” he said.
