Liberal Republican governor Chris Christie extended an extraordinary hand to Obama just before the 2012 election, praising Obama’s response to the disaster left by hurricane Sandy. Christie didn’t just project praise in the direction of Obama, he allowed himself to be used as a media pawn by the Obama campaign and left wing messaging infrastructure. Was Obama right to visit the area? Of course. But wouldn’t ANY President have done the same? Wouldn’t ANY President have brought forth a loud and obvious response to such a disaster?
Very few argue Obama’s use of the Sandy disaster didn’t help his candidacy. Most accept it was a pivotal moment through which Obama could move away from issues plaguing his campaign, such as the economy.
Looks like Obama is again heading for New Jersey. Before you proclaim I’m wrong for saying it’s all politics, consider that an Obama visit to NJ, at this point, is 100% unnecessary. There is virtually nothing gained by a visit by Obama outside of political posturing and narrative control.
Here’s the score as suggested by the Associated Press.
For Christie, the president’s appearance is yet another way to showcase his beloved Jersey Shore. The Republican has been touting it throughout the Memorial Day weekend as a destination point that is back in business and he broke a Guinness World record Friday by cutting a 5.5 mile ceremonial ribbon that symbolically tied together some of the hardest-hit towns by Sandy. The state has a $25 million marketing campaign to highlight the shore’s resurgence in time for the summer season.
Both men will reprise the remarkable bipartisan tableau they offered during Sandy’s immediate aftermath when Obama flew to New Jersey just days before the election to witness the storm’s wreckage. Politically, the visit plays well for both men. Christie, seeking re-election this year, will stand shoulder to shoulder with a president popular among Democrats in a Democratic leaning state. And Obama, dueling with congressional Republicans on a number of fronts, gets to display common cause with a popular GOP stalwart. (Obama has not scheduled any face time with state Sen. Barbara Buono, Christie’s likely Democratic opponent in the governor’s race).
Yes, Obama’s visit also benefits Christie politically. Yes, it benefits Obama politically. Now ask yourself, do you think these two would go through these motions if it were not politically advantageous?
