Re: Smithsonian-Mexican immigrants are defying expectations.

For decades, undocumented Mexicans have taken the jobs that nobody else seemed to want, while fending off charges that they were not only depriving Americans of gainful employment but were also lowering the wage for some blue-collar jobs.
Jobs that nobody wants at 1980 wages. They are absolutely lowering the wage scales. When businesses find themselves at a shortage for workers, they begin to compete to get workers to fill the positions... this means offering better wages and benefits. Such improvements in wages and benefits are unnecessary when an employer can replace you in two seconds with a worker who will happily live with 12 other people in an apartment and take the job at minimum wage. The laws of supply and demand cannot funtion normally when a false surplus of workers is generated by illegal aliens.

A local chicken processing plant used to employ 2/3 of the population of this county. ALL of the people who worked there were Americans. Since 1980, the average workers wage in that plant has declined, as the cost of living has risen. Illegal aliens typically live 12 or more to an apartment, sharing their expenses, thus are able to afford to send a LOT of money back home, where they will later return to live VERY well. They have no desire to become Americans.. why should they? How would they benefit?

The surprising reality, however, is that Mexico's immigrants fuel a complex economic dynamic: they have not only raised their standard of living here, they've also created a flow of capital back to villages across Mexico.
Who is really suprised by this? American cash flowing into Mexico can only be good for Mexico... did they expect it would cause Mexico HARM?

Note it says the illegal immigrants have raised THEIR standard of living.. but says nothing about the effects it has upon the standard of living of those whose country this is.

It is wonderful that Mexico and the Illegal immigrants prosper from all of this.... too bad it is at the expense of Americans, among whom those who suffer the most are the working poor, especially minorities.

Isn't that nice. But what about the lowered standard of living caused here because of their invasion. Salaries have remained stagnet, and jobs are now scarce, because of these illegals.

The newly prosperous Mexican Americans are exemplified by success stories like that of Jaime Lucero, 48, who arrived in the United States to work as a dishwasher. Today, he is the millionaire owner of both a women's apparel company in New Jersey and a factory in his home state of Puebla.

Another entrepreneurial stand-out is Herminio GarcÃÂ*a, 62, who now owns a Yonkers, New York, tortilla factory that ships his products to supermarkets, delicatessens and restaurants across the Northeast. Despite his success, however, he, like many immigrants, yearns to return home: "I'm still," he says wistfully, "a farm boy."
What a great example for today's youth. Just tell them that obeying the law is for suckers and to get ahead in today's America you have to lie, cheat and steal your way to the American dream. Maybe America's new motto should be that lawbreakers get rewarded and those who obey the law get shafted.

My problem is why should I obey the law when they dont and get away with it left and right? Why should we even continue having laws at all if we wont enforce them. We cannot pick and choose what laws to enforce and what laws to ignore.
