The World War II memorial showdown was one of those moments when even the Left’s most enthusiastic spin-meisters and dedicated followers stop cold, with a mass of ice forming in the pit of their stomachs, and realize one of their icons has really screwed up, beyond their ability to conceal the truth. On the same day Barack Obama lost his ill-advised battle against World War II vets, we got another of those moments – and a reminder of why the media normally goes to great lengths to conceal the existence of Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV).

Reid is an ugly piece of work, a hyper-partisan hatchet man who has quietly murdered countless bills that would have given America’s rear tires some purchase against the Obama quicksand we’ve been caught in. He’s got a limitless dispensation from the press to hit below the belt, as when he retailed a phony story about Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney evading his taxes for a decade, told to Reid by an imaginary friend. Any Republican who tried such a stunt against a Democrat candidate, especially Barack Obama, would have been torn to shreds; his nearly immediate resignation under withering scrutiny would have been one of the big stories of the 2012 campaign. But Reid gets a pass. He always gets a pass.

Not today. Today Reid shot his mouth off in front of cameras, and all of America recoiled in horror. This is the Democrats’ disgraceful Shutdown Theater reduced to its essentials, the battle cry of our over-indulged ruling class given full throat, as they wage war against America to retain their power and privileges. Harry Reid and his party are going to make you suffer, citizens, until you submit to their demands, and halt the unspeakable outrage of a shutdown that has put so many highly-compensated non-essential government employees on the sidelines.

CNN’s Dana Bash asked Reid about the Republican strategy of funding the government piecemeal (i.e. the way things really ought to work, all of the time, especially if Democrats are going to defy federal law for years on end and refuse to pass a budget.) One of these Republican bills will fund the National Institutes of Health, which among other things conducts clinical trials for cancer treatments. Bash wanted to know how Democrats could be opposed to such a bill, especially since they’ve been making a lot of noise about the potential danger to cancer-stricken children. She also folded in the rhetoric we heard from Democrats during the recent gun-control debate, when it was boldly asserted that any action which could save just one child’s life is worth taking.

Reid dumped his usual boilerplate about the unspeakable outrage of Republicans picking and choosing which parts of government to fund. ”But if you can help one child with cancer, why wouldn’t you do it?” Bash pressed.

“Why would we want to do that?” snarled Reid. ”I have 1,100 people at Nellis Air Force Base that are sitting home. They have a few problems of their own.”

Reid followed up with a little dash of condescension and misogyny by sneering at Bash, “To have someone of your intelligence to suggest such a thing maybe means you’re irresponsible and reckless.” Unlike, say, a Senate Majority Leader who defies federal budget laws for over four years, while six trillion dollars gets piled onto the national debt.

Why must you kids pester Harry Reid with your cancer? Don’t you know he’s got federal employees to worry about? Why do you always have to make everything about you?

This is the same twisted mindset that brought us Obama’s thicket of barricades around parks and memorials – including at least one park that doesn’t get any federal funding at all. It’s all about making the shutdown hurt as much as possible, as quickly as possible… because big spenders like Reid and Barack Obama are terrified that people are going to start asking whether the shutdown is really so bad, if we really need that army of “non-essential” employees, and if a nation swimming in debt might not be better off working from zero and carefully funding only the most urgent priorities.

No one in the Democrat Party is behaving as if they think the politics of the shutdown are going to swing in their favor over time… not if they agree to reasonable measures that would keep important services running and ease the pain on the American people. You can have your parks and cancer treatments back if you fork over the dough. The White House even issued an outright ransom demand for the World War II memorial… and it came from a spokesman named “Schultz.” Hopefully a vet named Hogan will issue a response.



Update: A Shutdown Theater encore, as President Obama actually instructs Wall Street to get nervous, presumably because he finds the resilience of the stock market after the first two days of the shutdown embarrassing. I can remember a time when Democrats angrily accused Obama critics of trying to talk the economy into a tailspin. Well, here’s your man explicitly doing that, liberals. Enjoy.

Listen to the Question About a Child With Cancer That Appeared to Stump Harry Reid – and His Eventual Response That’s Causing Many to Cringe

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) was asked during a press conference Wednesday why he opposes a House bill that would fund the National Institutes of Health during the partial government shutdown if it could “help one child who has cancer.”

And he was apparently unprepared for the question from CNN’s Dana Bash.

“You all talked about children with cancer unable to go to clinical trials.

The House is presumably going to pass a bill that funds at least the NIH,” Bash began. “Given what you’ve said, will you at least pass that?

And if not, aren’t you playing the same political games that Republicans are?”

Her question is in reference to several House appropriations bills that would keep certain institutions funded during the partial government shutdown. Senate Democrats say they will not negotiate with the House on anything until it passes a “clean” continuing resolution, ending the shutdown completely and leaving Obamacare untouched.

“What right did they have to pick and choose what part of government is going to be funded? It’s obvious what’s going on here. You talk about reckless and irresponsible,” said Sen. Reid. “[T]hey have no right to pick and choose.”

Bash persisted: “But if you can help one child who has cancer, why wouldn’t you do it?”

“Why pit one against the other?” Sen. Chuck Schumer said off microphone, avoiding the the main question.

“Why would we want to do that?” Reid said with a confused look on his face after stuttering. “I have 1,100 people at Nellis Air Force base that are sitting home. They have a few problems of their own.”

“This is — to have someone of your intelligence to suggest such a thing maybe means you’re irresponsible and reckless,” he added.

“I’m just asking a question,” Bash said.



And in response to what “right” does the House have to pick and choose which parts of government are funded, David Freddoso notes the following passage from the Constitution, Article I, Section 9: “No Money shall be drawn from the Treasury, but in Consequence of Appropriations made by Law…”

“Congress holds the power of the purse,” Freddoso notes. “As one of Congress’s two chambers, the House of Representatives has some power to decide which functions of government are funded.”

RUSH: Harry Reid. Let's move on to sound bites five, six, and seven. This is yesterday, Dana Bash, Q&A with Dingy Harry.
BASH: If you can help one child who has cancer, why wouldn't you do it?
REID: Why would we want to do that? I have 1,100 people at Nellis Air Force base that are sitting home. They have a few problems of their own. This is... To have someone of your intelligence to suggest such a thing maybe means --
BASH: I'm just asking a question.

RUSH: Can you hear it? She is so embarrassed. Her idol, Harry Reid, has humiliated her. Little Dana Bash, accredited CNN infobabe, official member of the establishment, part of the ruling class, walks up to her idol, Harry Reid, when she learns that Reid refuses a Republican bill that would fund the National Institutes of Health... This is the story yesterday where 200 kids denied cancer treatment. Republicans said, "Here's a bill that pays for that," and Dingy Harry said, "No, I'm not gonna get tricked into that."
So Dana Bash asked, "If you could help one child has cancer, why wouldn't you do that?" and Reid said, "Why would we want to do that, you dumb b-i itch? we've got 1100 people at Nellis Air Force Base sitting at home. They got a few problems of their own. To have someone of your intelligence suggest such a thing maybe means you're irresponsible." Bash: "I'm just asking a question! I'm just asking a question." Jeez. Jeez, oh, man.
BREAK TRANSCRIPT
RUSH: You know, I heard and read the Dingy Harry answer to Dana Bash yesterday, but I didn't know it was anything like this. This is just... This is what I mean about them imploding. So she says, "If you could help one the child who has, why wouldn't you do that?" And he gets mad! I mean, this is his buddy in the media. Harry Reid is one of her idols. If she didn't work at CNN, she'd like to work for him. "Why would we want to do that? Why would I want to save one kid with cancer when I have 1,100 people at Nellis Air Force Base sitting home? They have a few problems of their own. Have someone of your intelligence suggest such a thing means that you're just maybe irresponsible."
"I'm just asking a question! I'm just asking a question." (Crying) "Just a question."
Dingy Harry was asked to repeat what he'd said yesterday.

REID: Little kids who are not gonna have clinical trials. Of course I care about that! I have 16 of my own grandchildren, five children. What I told Dana Bash, who is a fine reporter, is that we care about all these things. We care about our state parks. We care about our veterans, but we can't fall into the trap -- and here is the trap of the Cruz-led Republicans, and that is this, "Listen, we'll cherry-pick. We'll -- we'll open this today and this tomorrow and this tomorrow, and finally at the end, everything will be open except the money to finish Obamacare."
RUSH: All right. We gotta have some comment on that, too, but we gotta break, so we'll be back.
BREAK TRANSCRIPT
RUSH: You know, I don't want to make too big a deal out of this, but I could. I could spend 15 minutes on this exchange, talking about this. But there are so many other things going on out there, things I wanted to talk about but scroll out of view. I'm just struck. He says he's not going to fall for the Cruz-led Republican trap. And is what the Cruz-led Republican trap? Cherry-pick. We're not gonna cherry-pick.
Would somebody explain to me what the hell Obama's been doing with his own health care plan? He's been cherry-picking who gets a waiver and who doesn't. He's been cherry-picking who's subject to it and who isn't. He's been cherry-picking laws that he doesn't like left and right, DOMA, gay marriage, you name it, Obama cherry-picks, and if he doesn't like a law, he just ignores it. But his own health care plan, he decides what will be delayed and what won't be delayed.
In fact, Betsy McCaughey has made the point that what we are implementing today is not the legislation that was signed into law by Obama. The law as signed by Obama did not have waivers for 2,500 companies, businesses, and unions. The law as signed by Obama did not have a one-year delay of the employer mandate. And the point that she is making in this is that we have a president who is behaving outside the bounds of the Constitution. He's lawless. By virtue of his own cherry-picking, he's deciding what parts of his own law he's going to delay so as not to hurt him or his party in future elections. So the employer mandate, delayed 'til 2015. A bunch of businesses and unions got waivers through the 2012 election.

Betsy McCaughey makes a great point. The thing that's implementing today, the exchanges, it's not what he signed into law. He has changed it dramatically, on his own, outside the law. But, folks, I really want to go back. I want to go back to Dingy Harry's answer, number five. The Dana Bash question. I have the transcript of the full question that she asked here. She said to Dingy Harry, "Given what you said, will you at least pass that? And if not, aren't you playing the same political games that the Republicans are?"
So even in her question she savaged the Republicans. Even in her question, she ripped the Republicans. And that wasn't good enough for him. Then she said, "I mean, the premise is the Republicans are playing political games with the lives of children. How much more bias can you get?" And that's what her point is. She is saying, in her question here, the premise of her question is that the Republicans are playing political games with the lives of children. She's totally on his side.
The Republicans are not playing games. It's Obama and Harry Reid who've shut down the government. There are 200 kids that can't get treated for cancer at NIH. The Republicans offered a bill to fund it, that and many others, and every damn one of them Obama and Harry Reid have said "no" to. And while they say "no" to it, they accuse the Republicans, and Dana Bash did in her question, the premise of her question is the Republicans are playing political games with the lives of children. And that's still not enough for Harry Reid.
And then she said, "You all talked about children with cancer unable to go to clinical trials. The House is presumably going to pass a bill that funds the NIH. Will you, at least, pass that? And if not, aren't you playing the same political games that republicans are?"
And Harry Reid said, "Listen, Senator Durbin explained that very well. And he's, did it here, did it on the floor earlier, as did Senator Schumer, and it's this: What right do they have to pick and choose what part of government's going to be funded? It's obvious what's going on here. You talk about reckless and irresponsible. Wow. What this is all about is Obamacare. They are obsessed. I don't know what other word I can use. They are obsessed with this Obamacare thing. ... It's working now and it'll continue to work and people will love it even more than they do now by far. So they have no right to pick and choose."
And that's when she said, "But you could help one child who has cancer, why wouldn't you do that?"
And here's that exchange again. Sound bite number five. Listen to this. Now that you've heard her premise, which was to attack the Republicans, she is totally on his side throughout this question, except when did she says, "If you can help one child who has cancer, why wouldn't you do it?"

REID: -- you’re irresponsible and reckless.
RUSH: (imitating Bash) "I'm just asking a question. (crying) Golly, Harry, I love you so much, I'm just asking a question." I don't know. "To have someone of your intelligence suggest such a thing maybe means you're irresponsible." Helping a child. So he's on the hot seat. Now, the reason, folks, I'm spending time on this is because, you know it as well as I do, that meanness, that heartlessness, which came naturally to him, he was faced with a straightforward question: "If you could help kids, why wouldn't you?"
"Why would we do that?"
The media tells everybody that it's the Republicans who have no heart, it's the Republicans who hate women, War on Women, kids, minorities, you name it. It's the Republicans who are trying to fund these programs after the Democrats shut this process all down. And the truth always comes out. It's Dingy Harry who is the mean SOB. It's Harry Reid who is the snarky, mean, insensitive, little "get off my yard" guy. Even snapping at one of his own friends in the media. So then we get to the next sound bite. Bill Press released a clip, he interviewed Dingy Harry and he released a clip of it because nobody listens. So they had to release a transcript.
The question was, "There's been some flak in the last few hours over a comment you made on CNN. You were asked on CNN if you could help one child who has cancer, why wouldn't you do it. And your response was, 'Why would we want to do that?'"

What I told Dana Bash, who is a fine reporter, is that we care about all these things. We care about our state parks. We care about our veterans. But we can’t fall into the trap. RUSH: Folks, this is a mean, vindictive, partisan little man who gets away with it because he's so soft-spoken, you can barely hear him. Cherry-pick? Cherry-pick? What the heck is Obamacare now but nothing but a cherry-picked amalgam of things that are taken out of it so that they will not hurt the Democrat Party if implemented. I mean, this is outrageous, 2,500 waivers, you name it. The cherry-picks that Obama has made with his own bill dwarf what's going on here.

I think Harry Reid proves exactly why the government should not have so much control over people's health care, because Harry Reid was basically saying, "You do what we say or kids will die." Now, no government should ever have that much power over its citizens, but particularly ours, which is a constitutional republic. "You do what we say or kids will die." That was Harry Reid exercising the power that he thinks he has.
Why would we do that?
Why would we save the life of a child?
By the way, all of Harry Reid's kids are congressional lobbyists. When it comes to cherry-picking, what are the Republicans asking for that Obama hasn't already gotten? They asked for a delay of the individual mandate just like Obamacare got an employer mandate delay. Cherry-picking. Obamacare's a cherry orchard. Obamacare's a cherry pie. Obamacare's a cherry Pop Tart. Obamacare's cherry Kool-Aid, and we're all being forced to drink the damn stuff.
Mr. President, the person holding up funding of this government and shutting it down is you, you and Senator Reid. The GOP have already, and are prepared to, send you bills to fund the government. If you really want to fund the NIH to help those sick little people, those kids, here's a bill; here's a pen. Go fund yourself! WIC, Head Start, the National Parks? Here's a bill. Here's a pen. Go fund yourself! Military? No, you don't really want to fund them, so never mind.
Here's a bill that extends the same subsidies, waivers and breaks that you've given members of Congress, your union buddies, other special interest groups. Here's a bill that gives all that to the American people. Here's a bill. Here's a pen. Fund that. How about an Obamacare that treats everybody the same, Mr. President? Or how about an Obamacare that we just don't do right now because it's such an abject mess? Harry Reid. And yet, folks, it's the Republicans. Even after that happens.
Listen to Van Jones. He's on Crossfire last night on CNN, and they're talking about Harry Reid saying: What do you mean, save one child's life? Why would we do that?
JONES: He's gonna get beat up for that. I think we all know that Reid cares a lot about kids. It was a good question and a bad answer I’ll give you that. I don't think anybody's gonna sit here and say that he handled the question well.
RUSH: Except that you, Jones, naturally want to come and give the benefit of the doubt. Why? 'Cause he's a good liberal. Did you guys give Romney the benefit any doubt when you're telling lies about him, Mr. Jones?

RUSH: I still can't get over that Dana Bash question to Harry Reid and his answer to her reaction. I mean, he says to her, "I can't believe you'd ask me a question like that. You must be very irresponsible." He says that to her because he knows that she's on his side. He says that to her because there's no way he's gonna put him on the spot.
She not gonna do that, and she did, and he can't believe it -- and that's insolence! You don't do that and stay in the ruling class. So he had to challenge her qualifications, her womanhood, her femininity, everything -- and what was her reaction? "I'm just asking a question! God, I'm just asking a question," and then nothing more said about it. I think she's the only one who's even mentioned it. I haven't seen anybody other than, you know, occasionally somebody on Fox.
We have here have pointed out that Dingy Harry said, "Why would I save the life of one kid, when I got 1,100 people at my air base in Nevada that I gotta help?" Nobody else has brought it up. I'm still struck by that, folks. There's so much to learn from that. He couldn't believe she would act so insolent. How dare she embarrass him! Doesn't she know who's running this show? Doesn't she know that she's only allowed to be in the establishment because people like him permit it?
Who does she think she is?
That's what's all wrapped up into that. Do not doubt me -- and she knows it, by virtue of saying, "I'm just asking a question! Oh, God! Oh, God! I'm just asking a question."
BREAK TRANSCRIPT
RUSH: You know, back in the old days of the Soviet Union, if somebody at Pravda or Izvestia had asked Brezhnev or Khrushchev a question like Dana Bash asked Harry Reid, they'd be sent to the gulag or a reeducation camp. (interruption) No, they wouldn't have been sent to MSNBC, 'cause there wasn't one. Not even the Soviet Union had anything that bad. MSNBC is an embarrassment to the regime. The Soviet Union, oh, yeah. Make no mistake about it, MSNBC is an embarrassment for the regime.
Now, the regime may not know it, but it's an embarrassment for the regime. The Soviets knew what they were doing when it came to media. They had Pravda, Izvestia, Interfax, but they didn't have goons, loons, and just whatever that stable is there. They at least tried to put their best foot forward.

RUSH: Chuck-U Schumer this afternoon, Capitol Hill. Grab sound bite 28, we have time to squeeze this in. Here is what this piecemeal cherry-pick stuff is really all about.
SCHUMER: To fund these piecemeal bills would give Ted Cruz a veto power over what is funded and what isn't. Ted Cruz came up with this strategy. Shut down the whole government and then we'll pick a few pieces and let you fund them. Ted Cruz is not the entire US government.
RUSH: They're melting down. Cruz has accomplished a lot here, and these people would rather get cancer than let Ted Cruz win, guaran-damn-tee you.
