NATO head: Trump's tough talk has added $100B to alliance, helped deter Russia

By Gregg Re | Fox News

    North Atlantic Treaty Organization
(NATO) Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, speaking on "Fox News Sunday," said President Trump's tough talk has ultimately strengthened the 70-year-old alliance by leading member nations to contribute tens of billions of additional dollars to ensure their own security.
Stoltenberg's comments were a direct repudiation of critics who have accused Trump of undermining NATO byrepeatedly pushing allies to meet their defense spending obligations -- and Trump himself referred to Stoltenberg's interview minutes later on Twitter as a rejection of a narrative pushed by "Dems & fake news."

"President Trump has been very clear," Stoltenberg told fill-in host John Roberts. "He is committed to NATO. He stated that clearly just a few days ago and also at the NATO summit in July. But at the same time, he has clearly stated that NATO allies need to invest more. And therefore at the summit in July last year, we agreed to do more to step up -- and now we see the results."
In all, Stolenberg continued, "by the end of next year, NATO allies will add hundred – 100 billion extra US dollars toward defense. So we see some real money and some real results. And we see that the clear message from President Donald Trump is having an impact."

In July 2018, NATO leaders pledged their “unwavering commitment” to boost defense spending, following stern words from the president. The U.S. and European allies signed a declaration stating they were “committed to improving the balance of sharing the costs and responsibilities of alliance membership.”

Trump has long pressed NATO countries to fulfill their goal of spending 2 percent of their gross domestic products on defense by 2024. NATO estimated las year that 15 members, or just over half, would meet that benchmark.
TUCKER CARLSON: TO THE LEFT, IT'S TREASON TO DARE TO CRITICIZE NATO
Stoltenberg, while acknowledging that Trump was putting an unusual amount of pressure on NATO, said the harsh tactics were needed given Russia's extraordinary aggression.
"President Donald Trump is having an impact."
    — North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg
"What he's doing is to help us adapt the alliance, which we need because we live in a more unpredictable world with a more assertive Russia using violence and force against a neighbor, Ukraine," Stoltenberg said. "And therefore NATO has to adapt."
On Twitter Sunday, Trump highlighted Stoltenberg's comments, and then reposted another user's message that "stronger people stand up for others" and that the president was "standing up for America."
"Jens Stoltenberg, NATO Secretary General, just stated that because of me NATO has been able to raise far more money than ever before from its members after many years of decline," the president wrote. "It’s called burden sharing. Also, more united. Dems & Fake News like to portray the opposite!"

We pay NATO, we need their services in Central America now!

Send in troops to round up the gangs and cartel and put them on Prison Island!

Shut our border down and stop this invasion.

Mexico let them in and Mexico can keep them for one year until the gang problem is cleaned up!

Then send all these illegal aliens back!

NATO is for North Atlantic. Doesn't apply to South of our Border. UN peace keeping forces could be used, otherwise, we're on our own.

Totally agree. That's why I think we should implement Judy's Plan B, and cut off all aid and trade if these countries don't take action to stop illegal immigration out of their country by their citizens into the United States. It may not stop it all, but they'll pay for price for it.

I think there are a number of Western Hemisphere initiatives that probably cover most of what is discussed on this forum. The two I know of are the Convention on Roads, and the Return of Children. Both OAS agreements. The normal protocol is that we respect each nation's existing sovereignty (with the exception of places like Cuba, Venezuela or Grenada; also Chile, Peru, Bolivia, etc. But you get the gist).

Anyway, citing international protocol is a way of throwing liberals' arguments back at them, since citing international law is a favorite.

I'm sure there are and we should be using them. No foreign minor in this country illegally should be in this country for any reason for more than 24 hours without arrangements with the home countries to retrieve them at their expense.

Yes, authorities are supposed to presume the worst when an unaccompanied minor arrives in the US and seeks an unusual means of admission. (Normally they bring their passport with them, even if not traveling with a parent or guardian.) The child might have been kidnapped, or one parent split with the kid. Who knows? We are supposed to find out where they are from and contact their diplomatic mission.

Yes, someone in DHS needs to account for why this isn't and hasn't been done. These are minors on the run and need to be treated as such. I don't care why or what they say is their purpose, it's irrelevant, they must be treated as runaways and returned to their country by their own diplomatic missions and immediately, within 24 hours.

If our children run away to Canada...Canada does not get to KEEP them! They cannot put them in Foster Care or hand them over to strangers!

Send these UAC's back within 48 hours!

This is outrages, who authorized this policy...who voted for this...they are sick people who think it is ok to keep these foreign minors! These kids probably do not fully understand what is going on. Send them back to their President!!!
