Elvira Arellano has been living in the Adalberto United Methodist Church since last Tuesday
AMY GOODMAN: Just going through the list of politicians who are supporting Elvira, you have Senator Barack Obama, Congressmember Luis Gutierrez, even Mayor Richard Daley.
Can you talk about the congressional action on this issue, Rev. Walter Coleman?
REV. WALTER COLEMAN: Right. Because of her leadership really, two private bills have been put in Congress on her behalf, one by Congressman Gutierrez and another by Congressman Bobby Rush. Congressman Rush’s bill includes a group of other families that Elvira actually organized, who are all in the same situation. That is, one or other of the parents is undocumented and facing deportation for doing nothing wrong, except entering this country and working and paying taxes, but their children are U.S. citizens.
And Elvira has worked very hard to dramatize this issue. She has led delegations to Washington, large delegations of 100, 150, seven times in the last year, talked to over 120 congressmen and over 40 senators. She has won the support of the Chicago City Council and the mayor, the Cook County board and Cook County president.
The state legislature, the state senate have all passed formal resolutions. And the governor of Illinois is supporting it, as well as a wealth of other church and community leaders.
Rep. Gutierrez also visited Arellano and brought her copies of letters he had written on her behalf to President George Bush and John Hostettler, chair of the House Subcommittee on Immigration, Border Security and Claims. Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley sent a copy of a letter he wrote to Achim asking for an extension of Arellano’s stay of deportation.

Now let me get this straight ... we've got some woman holed up in a church and members of the US Congress and even a Mayor are introducing bills on her behalf to intervene in a deportation order for being in the US illegally in violation of US Immigration Law?

This going on while we have 144,000 American Troops STUCK IN IRAQ getting blown to bits 5 to 100 a day and not one person has introduced A BILL to get them home to safety?

Because they're distracted from their Congressional DUTIES by yet another illegal alien?

Who are these morons? Mark their names down; put them on a list; for ejection from service in 2 years.

I can not believe Obama didn't have the intelligence to stay as far away from this one as like the ... North Pole would be.

Elvira will be the Democrats Terry Shiavo.

I say storm the church and get Elvira and deport her. If they could use the SWAT team to get Elian Gonzalez and return him to communist Cuba then they can get Elvira and send her back to democratic Mexico. Her son is already there so she can go and join him. Maybe Elton John should have included churches that are sanctuaries for criminals when he criticized religion.

There are conflicting reports of what ICE will do, the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The Chicago Tribune has an AP piece that says, “They would apprehend Arellano at a time and place ‘of their choosing’ and that nothing prevented them from going into the church. But on Friday, a government official close to the case said immigration agents have decided against entering the church to remove Arellano. The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because it is against ICE policy to discuss operational matters, said the Arellano case carries ‘no more priority than any of the other 500,000 fugitives nationally.’”
