Surprise! NYT’s Embarrassing Rubio Hit Piece Came From Democratic Super PAC

A reporter at the Washington Free Beacon discovered that The New York Times’ embarrassing story attacking Republican presidential candidate Marco Rubio for traffic violations was almost certainly planted by a Democratic super PAC.

(RELATED: Marco Rubio And His Wife Have Gotten A Bunch Of Traffic Tickets)

“Marco Rubio and His Wife Cited 17 Times for Traffic Infractions” is the headline of Friday’s Times piece, which credits three separate reporters. Missing from the headline is the important context that the candidate himself only had four violations to his name, over the span of two decades.

The Times took a lot of heat for the story from conservatives, who saw the piece as pointless and petty. But in an actual work of journalism, the Free Beacon’s Brent Scher noted that Rubio’s records weren’t pulled by the Times at all, but by Democratic opposition group American Bridge.

The David Brock-controlled American Bridge is known for its occasionally shoddy reporting work. In another embarrassing incident in 2014, American Bridge spread a video they claimed was of Republican Senate candidate David Perdue signing a young woman’s stomach… when he was actually signing her inhaler.

There’s nothing inherently unethical about reporting opposition research, but typically reporters are upfront about their sources. By comparison, The New York Times was open about the fact that their reporting on Hillary Clinton’s shady Clinton Foundation dealings came after they were approached by conservative author Peter Schweizer.

UPDATE: The New York Times has responded to the allegations by saying it was a complete coincidence that three reporters came across Rubio’s traffic ticket information a week after American Bridge.

The New York Times Friday report that Republican Sen. Marco Rubio (Fla.) and his wife Jeanette have been cited 17 times for traffic violations was written after the citations were pulled by liberal opposition research firm American Bridge, according to Miami-Dade County court records.

Records show that each of the citations mentioned by the New York Times were pulled in person by American Bridge operatives on May 26, 2015.

Take for example the time Rubio was pulled over in 1997. “Mr. Rubio’s troubles behind the wheel predate his days in politics,” wrote the New York Times. “In 1997, when he was cited for careless driving by a Florida Highway Patrol officer, he was fined and took voluntary driving classes.”

A look at the docket for that infraction on Miami-Dade County’s website shows that American Bridge was in Miami to pull records on that case at 11:42 a.m. on May 26:

Neither of the reporters, Alan Rappeport and Steve Eder, appeared on the docket records for any of the traffic citations for Rubio and his wife. An additional researcher credited in the New York Times, Kitty Bennett, also does not appear on any of the court records.

The reporters, however, were praised by others in the newsroom for their “nice scoop.”

None of the reporters involved responded to Washington Free Beacon requests for comment by press time.

In a recent Times story that actually cited Democratic sources by name, Jeremy Peters reported that “A Hillary Clinton Match-Up With Marco Rubio Is a Scary Thought for Democrats.”

So scary, indeed, that Democrats appear to be feeding opposition research to the Times.

Here is the full list of traffic violations recorded by Miami-Dade County for Rubio’s wife, Jeanette Dousdebes:

The citations were all pulled by American Bridge:

Well, this certainly doesn't bother me about Rubio.

    Yours truly,

    Ms. Lead Foot

I won't vote for him, but it's not because of his traffic citations, it's because of his stances on trade, taxes and immigration, past and present.

I do not take traffic offense too lightly. DUI is a misdemeanor traffic offense, and speed and running lights do kill American drivers, too. He has four traffic offenses in 17 years, I have 2 in 59 years. If he were my son, yes, I would tell him he has a problem. Then let's not ignore that he is in favor of amnesties for lawbreakers. Hmmm.....velly intelesting. Now, how much is too much law breaking in his values? He seems to fall short in my perspective.
