Democrat Edwin Edwards, who served 4 terms in the U.S. House of Representatives, 4 terms in the Louisiana Governor’s Mansion, and 8 years in prison, isn’t allowed to run for statewide office – a federal felony conviction bars him from doing that. So, 3 years after leaving prison, he is running for federal office: U.S. Congress.
The 86-year old’s career has been fraught by scandal, but it was the racketeering, extortion, money laundering, mail fraud, and wire fraud charges arising from the licensing of a riverboat casino company which landed him behind bars.
In addition to his… “colorful” political career, upon leaving prison he married a blonde bombshell more than 50 years his junior and starred with her on this short-lived reality TV series The Governor’s Wife, created by A&E.
The Washington Post reports that in an apparent effort to appeal to the conservative voters in his district, he says he is in favor of opening the Keystone XL pipeline, he’s critical of Obamacare, and technically he didn’t vote for the President… because he was in federal prison. What a knee-slapper!
Despite his scandal-plagued past and his age, he thinks he has an excellent shot at winning. Let’s hope for the sake of Louisiana and America he’s not right.
