Rep. Amash: McCain, Graham Increasingly on Fringe of GOP

As Republican Sens. John McCain and Lindsey Graham continually call for military action in Syria and a rejection of Russia's proposed diplomatic solution they show themselves to be out of the GOP mainstream, says Republican Rep. Justin Amash of Michigan.

"Increasingly, their views are the fringe views within the Republican Party," Amash said Sunday on ABC's "This Week."" The Republican Party believes we shouldn't have gone to war."

Most Republicans believe the United States is "in the right spot" because there is now a process to get Syria's chemical weapons removed, Amash said. Syria, accused of using poison gas on its own civilians last month, admitted finally that it has such weapons last week when it agreed to a Russian proposal to put them under international control.

"We haven't achieved success yet, but at least we're avoiding the bombing," Amash said. "And people back home do not want us to get involved in a war over there."

Amash was asked whether it would be considered a win for Syrian President Bashar Assad and a defeat for the United States if Assad drags out the current process for up to a year.

"I wouldn't call it a defeat for the United States," Amash said. "It may be a victory for [Assad]. But at the end of the day, we can't be involved in every civil war around the world."
