Teen walking in park with dad raped by group of men

Police surveillance video of the suspects
Five fiends took turns raping a terrified teenage girl in a Brooklyn playground Thursday evening, police said on Saturday.
The 18-year-old and her dad were inside Osborn Playground, near Hegeman Avenue and Osborn Street in Brownsville, at 9:10 p.m. when the perverts, all strangers, accosted them.
One had a gun and pointed it at the pair, demanding that the father leave.
The father ran out of the park, desperately looking for help.
When he left, each of the men, who ranged in age from 20 to 30, raped his daughter, cops said.
By then the father had encountered two cops, who accompanied him back to the park.
When the perverts saw the officers, they fled.
The teen was taken to Kings County Hospital, where she was treated and released.
Police surveillance video shows the creeps inside a bodega before the rape.

One, Id never be walking with kids much less an 18 year old daughter without a gun to protect them and myself.

Two, even if I got caught at gun point they would have to shoot me before Id leave my child's side.

Where is our President and his gun controls? Thats right, those are only for LAW ABIDING citizens. I guarantee the gun these thugs used was illegal. After seeing the video of the perps, they will probably be allowed to get away with it anyway and if they aeren't Obama will let them out of prison based on their "character". JMO

Two men accused of raping a woman inside a Brooklyn park surrender to cops, community source says

Two of the men accused of raping an 18-year-old woman inside a Brooklyn park turned themselves into police Sunday evening, according to a community source.

The men are being interviewed by cops inside the73rd Precinct, the source said. Police are still trying to identify and arrest three other men involved in the attack.

The NYPD did not immediately respond to a request seeking comment.

Earlier Sunday, a bodega clerk said he turned away the victim’s father who asked to use the store’s phone to call 911 moments after the Thursday night assault.

The Gaston deli store staffer said the man’s calm demeanor made the story hard to believe.

“He looked normal,” said the clerk who declined to give his name. “He didn’t look nervous or desperate.”

Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams (c.) is questioning why the NYPD were so slow to respond to the report of an 18-year-old girl being raped at Osborne Playground on Thursday.

The rebuffed father instead flagged down two uniformed police officers outside, officials said Sunday.

He told cops that he was walking with his daughter when the five suspects approached them inside Osborne Playground about 9:20 p.m. Thursday, officials said. One of the suspects pulled a gun and ordered the man to leave the playground, the NYPD said.

The five men then all raped the young woman, according to police.

“She’s ok,” the victim’s mother told the News Sunday. “I want them to get caught and go to jail for a long time. I feel bad horrible.”

On Saturday, police released surveillance video of the gang walking into a nearby deli before the attack.

The NYPD released surveillance footage from a nearby deli that captures the group of men suspected of raping an 18-year-old girl at a Brooklyn playground Thursday.

“They looked happy, like they didn’t care,” a deli worker told the Daily News Sunday. “They are bad guys.”

At a press conference by the park, Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams questioned why it took the NYPD two days to notify the public and community leaders about the attack.

“Something is not right,” the Beep charged. “The community needs to be notified immediately when we have such a savage attack with a handgun and a rape.”

It would not have taken that long to garner headlines if the attack had occurred on the Upper East Side, he argued.

“People should be protected,” he said. “People should be aware.”

    DCPI

One worker at the deli said the five suspects walked into the store and acted happy. No arrests have been made in connection to the incident.

Some of the delay was in part because SVU detectives were not immediately able to interview the victim, a police source said. Before detectives could speak with her, the victim had to be treated for unspecified existing medical conditions as well as the wounds she suffered during the sexual assault, the source said.

“I am disgusted and deeply saddened by the horrific attack that took place in Brownsville Thursday evening,” Mayor de Blasio said in a statement. “We will take every step possible to find and swiftly prosecute the assailants of this vicious crime.”

Inside the bodega two blocks away from the attack, the dad never explained why he needed to call the cops, according to the clerk, who declined to give his name.

“A lot of people come here asking to use the phone," the deli worker said. "I feel bad now knowing why he needed the phone. I didn't know."

Parents Said to Turn In 2 Teenagers Suspected in Brooklyn Rape

By BENJAMIN MUELLER and NATE SCHWEBERJAN. 10, 2016

By NEW YORK POLICE DEPARTMENT on Publish Date January 10, 2016.

Two teenagers suspected of taking part in a brazen gang rape at a Brooklyn playground were turned in to police custody by their parents on Sunday, a law enforcement official said.

The attack on Thursday night, in which the police said five young men with a gun separated a father from his 18-year-old daughter and then took turns raping the woman, set off waves of anger and uncertainty in the Brownsville neighborhood where it happened. Elected officials also questioned whether the police notified the public quickly enough after the attack.

    The two teenagers, a 15-year-old and a 14-year-old
, were turned in a day after the police released a surveillance video of the five suspects in a deli before the attack. The police said the young men ordered the father to leave the playground, raped the woman and then ran off before the father found help and returned with the police.

“It forces you to think differently about your own neighborhood,” said Alethea Pierce, who has lived in the area for 43 years.

Many unanswered questions remain about the assault and its aftermath.

The police said five young men, one of them armed, walked up to the father and daughter in Osborn Playground just after 9 p.m. on Thursday.

The father and daughter told the police they had been at the playground drinking beer, a Police Department official said on Sunday. That official and the other law enforcement official spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss a continuing investigation.

The father ran to get help, but the police official said it took him roughly 20 minutes to come upon two uniformed police officers on patrol. By the time the father returned to the playground with the officers, the young men had each raped the woman and fled, the official said.

In an area filled with public housing high-rises, delis and other stores, it is unclear why the father was not able to get help from bystanders or call the police from a store. The police said there was no evidence of any 911 calls being placed in connection with the attack.

The officers immediately called for an ambulance when they arrived, and the woman was taken to Kings County Hospital Center for treatment.

Without other witnesses, investigators began canvassing the area on Friday for video, starting with subway stations and businesses and expanding outward, the police official said. They also conducted a second, more detailed interview with the woman. On Saturday afternoon, investigators found the surveillance video that they released that night.

Mateo Gomez, an attendant at Laida Deli, said that the footage came from his shop and that he recognized the suspects as young men who came to the store most afternoons, sometimes stealing cakes and other snacks.

“They’re bad boys,” he said, shaking his head.

Some neighbors said they knew the playground as a dangerous, late-night hangout spot, though even they said they were shocked by the assault.

The public space has turquoise and red climbing equipment, fenced-in basketball and handball courts and a blacktop softball field, all arranged between a public school and a block of low-rise homes.

On Sunday morning, there was a condom on the ground, near a smashed bottle of vodka, in a secluded corner between a handball wall and a backyard fence.

Several residents, including Ms. Pierce, complained that the park lights were rarely on at night.

She already took precautions, carrying a small pocketknife for safety on her way to work past the playground. She called the attack “devastating.”

The New York City parks department said it was working with the Transportation Department, which maintains park lights, to inspect the lighting.

Other neighbors were upset they had not learned of the attack sooner.

“Why are we only just hearing about this yesterday?” said Kakeshia Taylor, 27, a mother of three. “This is breaking news. We need to know what’s happening in our neighborhood.”

In a statement issued on Sunday, Mayor Bill de Balsio said he was “disgusted and extremely saddened by the horrific attack.” He added, “Every New Yorker in every neighborhood deserves to feel safe and protected, and we will not stop until the perpetrators of this disturbing attack are held accountable for their actions.”

Some elected officials expressed concern about what they called an unusually long period before a public notice went out.

Eric L. Adams, the Brooklyn borough president, said as a matter of public safety, the Police Department erred in not releasing details of the crime to the public until Saturday night, after nearly 48 hours had passed.

“The N.Y.P.D. should have reported this immediately,” said Mr. Adams, who is a former New York City police captain. “You can’t have a crime of this magnitude and this level of savage behavior and not have the residents of that area become aware of what happened.”

The Police Department official said the local precinct commander had reached out to local leaders about the attack on Friday. He said the department generally releases public notice after finding and processing video or other leads. In cases where a pattern of criminal behavior and a continuing threat may exist, a notice may be released sooner.

The Police Department said in a statement on Sunday night that the officers who were alerted by the father “immediately responded and located the victim,” before calling for a supervisor and an ambulance. “There was no delay in responding to the rape,” the statement said.

Bernard Briggs, a city bus driver, said he came to fear young men who typically fill the playground at night after a run-in a few weeks ago. He had gone to use the men’s room when three men broke away from a group playing basketball to charge the bathroom door, trying to trap Mr. Briggs inside. Mr. Briggs said he fought his way out.

“There’s always young guys in this section, if they feel you’re vulnerable they come after you,” Mr. Briggs, 54, said. “I feel so terrible for the young lady.”

Four teenagers suspected of taking turns raping an 18-year-old woman at gunpoint at a Brooklyn playground after ordering her father to leave her side were taken into custody on Sunday, the police said.

The brazen attack on Thursday night, which the police said was carried out by the four teenagers along with another young man who remains at large, set off waves of fear and uncertainty in the Brownsville neighborhood where it happened. Elected officials also questioned whether the police notified the public quickly enough after the attack, a suggestion that the Police Department strongly contested.

Two teenagers, ages 14 and 15, were turned in to police custody by their parents; the two others, ages 15 and 17, were apprehended by the authorities, the police said. Charges against them were pending.

The developments came a day after the police released a surveillance video of the young men entering a deli before the rape. The woman’s father went to summon help when he was driven away, but before he could return with police officers the young men had run off into the darkness.

“It forces you to think differently about your own neighborhood,” said Alethea Pierce, who has lived in the area for 43 years.

The police said five young men, one of them armed, walked up to the father and daughter at Osborn Playground just after 9 p.m. on Thursday. The father and daughter told the police they had been at the playground drinking beer, a Police Department official said on Sunday, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss a continuing investigation.

Many questions about the assault and its aftermath remained difficult to account for. By the time the father returned to the playground with the officers, the young men had each raped the woman and fled, the official said.

Ditto that! I would have to call their bluff before I'd leave my daughter alone with them. I'd probably launch myself at the one with the weapon and shout for my daughter to run for help.

Suspects claim teen was having sex with father before alleged gang rape

The fifth suspect wanted in the gang rape of an 18-year-old girl in Brooklyn last week was nabbed Tuesday at school, law enforcement sources said.

The suspect, Travis Beckford, 17, of Brooklyn was being questioned by cops after he was picked up at Tilden High School. He has yet to be charged, sources said.

Meanwhile, two other suspects in the shocking crime told investigators that the five youths came across the young woman as she was having sex with her father in the Osborn Playground in Brownsville around 9 p.m. Thursday, sources said.
“Can we have some of that?” one asked the dad, who was allegedly drunk and had been boozing with his daughter before the attack, sources said.

Two of the teens say they then had consensual sex with the victim while her sloshed dad staggered away.

The dad returned and chucked a bottle at the teens, who fled, said one of the suspects, according to the sources.

The victim, the sources added, was combative, tried to flee from cops at the scene and bit an officer when she was finally placed in an ambulance after first refusing to go to the hospital and fighting with EMS.The woman claimed to have bipolar disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder, but was not prescribed any medicines.

Police observed multiple healed scars on the victim’s arms.

Once she arrived at Kings County Hospital, she finally consented to a rape kit test.

Cops took her clothing and underwear, which they found at the scene, for DNA testing.

The dad walked into two local delis looking for help — but was too drunk for anyone to understand him, witnesses said.

“He was swaying side to side. He asked me, ‘Lend me your phone.’ I said no,’’ said a worker in one of the shops, Zaida Deli and Grocery.

“He didn’t tell me it was an emergency or ‘I need to call the police’ or of course I would’ve given it to him or just called the police for him.”

As for two of the suspects’ claims that the sex was consensual, Police Commissioner Bill Bratton said, “At this juncture, we have no doubt she was raped.”

The first four teens were charged early Tuesday for their roles in the gang rape, while charges were pending against the fifth alleged attacker.

Denzel Murray, 14, Shaquell Cooper, 15, Ethan Phillip, 15, and Onandi Brown, 17, were each charged with rape, forcible compulsion, criminal sex act and sex abuse, police said.

The four teens were all charged as adults and were being held pending arraignment early Tuesday.

Two of the teens were brought in by their mothers Sunday night, the third was picked up at an undisclosed location and the fourth turned himself in, sources said.

“She has cuts and bruises consistent with being physically attacked,” a source added of the victim.

Police said the girl told detectives in a “detailed interview” at her house that one of her attackers had a bright red “satin-type’’ jacket on.

A video of the teens at a local bodega shows at least one of them wearing such a jacket, police said.

While two of the teens claim they engaged in consensual sex with her, a third suspect said he left the playground before the assault, sources said. The fourth teen is refusing to talk.

Police said they have video that shows the girl and her dad buying 22-ounce cans of beer at a bodega and entering the park before the attack.

The victim told cops that she and her 39-year-old dad — whom she only recently reconnected with after being adopted — were drinking near the handball courts “to be away from the police,” sources said.

Their plan backfired when the teens, including one with a gun, confronted them and ordered the father to scram, the pair told cops.

Surveillance video from the store shows the victim’s father walking inside before he begins to chat with two men. He does not appear to be frantic or in distress.

After walking out of the store, the dad drunkenly ran past a marked police car before eventually circling back and alerting the cops to his daughter’s attack — 20 minutes after the alleged rape first began to unfold, sources said.

Local activists complained that residents didn’t learn of the attack until it was publicized by the media over the weekend — and Mayor Bill de Blasio joined in the chorus of gripes Monday.

“The mayor was informed on Sunday of the tragic assault in Brooklyn. After further conversations with the NYPD, the mayor now believes strongly that the local community should have been informed sooner and has instructed that the NYPD notify communities more quickly moving forward, whenever appropriate,” a rep said.
