We must secure the borders and hire Americans.

There is nothing more patriotic than a secure border and ensuring that the path to citizenship – i.e. becoming a legal citizen of the United States of America — means something. Being a citizen means opportunity, freedom, a better life and being a part of the real American dream. Our national security simply cannot exist without a secure border.

Our broken immigration system is costing us billions of taxpayer dollars and countless lives. Our politicians speak out for national security, but the idea of national security without secure borders is absolute nonsense. The federal government’s failure to do its basic job of securing our borders is straining our schools, hospitals and economy to the breaking point—and wrecking local communities in the process.

I do not support amnesty. Period. I define amnesty as a path to citizenship or any similar legalization proposal for anyone who is in our country illegally.

Congressmen need to be pressed as to their exact definition of “amnesty”. It’s critical. Otherwise they will mislead you as to their true beliefs. We should never reward anyone whose first act in America is breaking the law. It is completely unfair to those who have spent years and thousands of dollars doing it the right way. While we are a nation founded by immigrants, we are also—and must remain–a nation of laws, applied equally to all. We welcome law-abiding immigrants, but there is a right way and wrong way to come to America.

There is plenty of room for reform and improvement of our nation’s immigration system, but securing the border, policing visa overstays, eliminating sanctuary cities, prosecuting illegal employment and deporting known criminals are necessary initial steps. This is true for both political and practical reasons. Once the border is secure and our visa systems respected, I have no doubt we can find the political will to enact many reforms to expand certain classes of visas and reduce processing times. We must modernize, streamline and simplify the processes of immigration and naturalization. And as Americans, we must all be unified using a single language. At every step of the way, the best interests of the American people as a whole must drive our immigration policy.
