RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — A dozen demonstrators opposed to Republican policies adopted by the North Carolina legislature are sitting on the floor in the office of House Speaker Thom Tillis in acts of civil disobedience.

General Assembly police hadn't arrested the protesters by late Tuesday afternoon and said the demonstrators were free to leave, but they had refused after more than an hour. Tillis is the Republican nominee for U.S. Senate this year.

The Rev. William Barber of the North Carolina NAACP says demonstrators included clergy members and fast-food workers seeking repeals to GOP-approved laws that refused Medicaid expansion and scaled back unemployment insurance, among others.

The demonstrators also sang and prayed as nearly 200 people connected to the "Moral Monday" movement visited the legislative complex to lobby lawmakers.
