(CBS/CBS HOUSTON) HOUSTON - A shooting spree early Sunday across two Texas counties left one woman dead and five other people injured, including a Concho County Sheriff, officials say. The suspected gunman also died during a shootout with law enforcement.
According to CBS Houston, the 23-year-old North Carolina resident, whose name has not yet been released, opened fire from his pickup truck on random cars in McCulloch and Concho counties beginning at 4:30 a.m.
Police identified the slain victim as Alicia Torres of Eola, Texas. She was found in her car around 6 a.m.
According to Reuters, Concho County Sheriff Richard Doane suffered a non-fatal injury after he encountered the alleged gunman around 6:15 on a highway north of the town of Eden. The alleged gunman eventually died in a gunfire exchange with a state trooper and a game warden who arrived as backup.
After the shootout, officials made the discovery that the man had been armed with an assault-style rifle, a handgun and several hundred rounds of ammunition, CBS Houston reports.
