DML: Major mistake if Trump focuses on illegals and skips over healthcare

Tonight is the State of the Union. That said, one of Trump’s big promises was to bring the “Art of the Deal” to healthcare. He vowed to fix Obamacare in his first year, but that has not happened.

A month before the election, he wrote: “Obamacare is a disaster. Rates going through the sky – ready to explode. I will fix it. Hillary can’t!”

My contention has been that Trump doesn’t know how to fix healthcare because doesn’t understand the issues with Obamacare. I say this because he didn’t feel the pain of having to pay the monthly premiums.

As a billionaire real estate developer equipped with in-house accountants and bookkeepers, odds are Trump couldn’t tell you what his monthly health premium cost. That’s not a slam on Trump, it’s just the reality of being mega rich guy versus being an average middle class American.

When I was exploring a run, during my speeches I emphasized the need to pass simple tax reform early on, thus, putting money in the pocket of every consumer regardless of party affiliation. I wanted to put in a flat tax, and then attack Obamacare. I felt this sort of strategy would make it easier to get public support for repealing and replacing Obamacare. If I had the support, voters would pressure Democrats to work with me.

I shared this opinion with the president but it went on deaf ears. Trump told a group of governors in February 2017 that tax reform could not be done until Obamacare was repealed and replaced (see short video below). He repeated this statement over and over again as if it was a passage from a playbook that only billionaires have access to. “For those people who say I would like to see you do a tax cut first, it just doesn’t work that way,” Trump said.

Well, here we are one month into 2018. Tax reform was just signed in December and healthcare is a major issue as Obamacare remains in place.

A recent national poll shows healthcare as the number one issue on the minds of Americans heading into the midterm elections. And so what is Trump focused on today? Amnesty for illegal aliens. What will he discuss tonight? The White House says the five major topics to be discussed during the State of the Union will be immigration, economy, national security, infrastructure and trade. Where is healthcare?

Last week, the very Trump friendly Rasmussen Report published a poll showing most Americans pass on medical checkups to save money.

According to Rasmussen, 20% of American adults have not filled a prescription in the last six months because the cost was too high. I suspect this number will grow higher as premiums continue to reach levels consistent with a mortgage payment. Thus, the president is missing a golden opportunity to outline a strategy to the nation Tuesday. Perhaps he will sneak something in there last second? Or maybe he won’t because there is no plan to mention. Either way, my healthcare bill is due next week and it hurts.

The survey of 1,000 American Adults was conducted on January 24-25, 2018 by Rasmussen Reports.
Here are some of the tweets Trump has issued over the past 18-months about Obamacare.

Obamacare is a disaster. Rates going through the sky – ready to explode. I will fix it. Hillary can't!#ObamacareFailed

We are making great progress with healthcare. ObamaCare is imploding and will only get worse. Republicans coming together to get job done!

The Democrats will make a deal with me on healthcare as soon as ObamaCare folds – not long. Do not worry, we are in very good shape!

Anybody (especially Fake News media) who thinks that Repeal & Replace of ObamaCare is dead does not know the love and strength in R Party!

Of course the Australians have better healthcare than we do –everybody does. ObamaCare is dead! But our healthcare will soon be great.

If Republicans don't Repeal and Replace the disastrous ObamaCare, the repercussions will be far greater than any of them understand!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) July 24, 2017
ObamaCare is a broken mess. Piece by piece we will now begin the process of giving America the great HealthCare it deserves!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) October 13, 2017
ObamaCare premiums are going up, up, up, just as I have been predicting for two years. ObamaCare is OWNED by the Democrats, and it is a disaster. But do not worry. Even though the Dems want to Obstruct, we will Repeal & Replace right after Tax Cuts!
