Police said Bates was at the center of seemingly random, but connected, crimes that started at 11 p.m. Thursday. He entered a residence at Cambridge Woods Apartments, where four women and four men, all USF students, were celebrating the start of the NFL football season.

Bates tied up the men and sexually assaulted the women, authorities said. He then went to another complex nearby, approached a woman sitting on her porch and forced her inside her apartment at gunpoint, investigators said.

He told the woman he was going to rape her, but she began to pray, Tampa Police Chief Jane Castor said. The woman prayed for Bates and with him, Castor said, and that unexpected act made Bates change his mind.

He left the woman unharmed but walked to The Oaks apartments, across the street from Cambridge Woods, where he barged into a party of about 25 people and threatened to shoot them. He forced the group into a bedroom and fired at least one round into the floor before leaving.

Claudia Seijo, a Hillsborough Community College student, posted on her Facebook page that the group was celebrating her birthday when Bates walked into the apartment.

“I got held at gunpoint inside my apartment with all my friends,” Seijo wrote. “Now all the cops are over here. Gun shot went off in the room with all of us. It was crazy. Worst birthday ever.”

Clarke, the USF sophomore, and his friend, Caitlyn Nugent, said they were shocked when they learned of the scope of Bates’ crimes and how it all came to an end in a shootout on U.S. 301

TAMPA (FOX 13) -Police and deputies have identified the suspect in last night's string of robberies and rapes as Charlie Christopher Bates, 24. He was killed after a chase and shootout with law enforcement this afternoon.
Bates' only arrest on record in Hillsborough County is a domestic violence battery from 2009, but police say he sexually battered four women after tying up four men at a USF-area apartment complex last night, then rounded up 25 people at gunpoint at a nearby party.

He is also suspected of forcing a neighboring woman into her apartment and ordering her to undress, but she convinced him to leave after reading Bible passages.

Finally, Bates allegedly fired three shots at a man as he was leaving the scene.

Friday, Tampa police chief Jane Castor said Bates was also a suspect in a home invasion from back on August 9. In that case, an armed man broke into a home near Busch Boulevard and Rome Avenue.

The suspect threatened to sexually batter and kill a woman there. But when she began praying, he fled from the scene.

Blood left at the scene allowed police to get a DNA match for Bates, and they issued an arrest warrant.

On September 3, Bates is suspected of breaking into another home where a boyfriend and girlfriend were asleep. The suspect woke them at gunpoint and demanded money, then pistol-whipped the boyfriend and committed a sexual act on the girlfriend before fleeing the scene.

At a news conference after Bates' death, Sheriff David Gee said detectives were investigating claims apparently made by Bates to one of the victims -- that Bates had murdered someone earlier in the day.

Detectives found a cell phone that they initially thought might have belonged to the possible murder victim, but they later determined that was not the case.

    VIDEO: Tampa chase and shootout

    VIDEO AND NARRATIVE AT LINK

TAMPA (FOX 13) -Watch and listen as Hillsborough Sheriff David Gee and Tampa Police Chief Jane Castor give this blow-by-blow account Friday's chase and shootout of a rape suspect, from the moment it began to the gunfire that ended it.

In the video, you'll see where a deputy began following 24-year-old Charlie Christopher Bates, and the moment Bates realized it and started trying to speed away.

SkyFOX followed the scene as Bates blew out his back windshield, firing bullets backwards at law enforcement officers in pursuit.

Sheriff Gee says the officers were determined not to let Bates get to the interstate, which explains what you see next: a cruiser bumps the back corner of Bates' car, sending him careening out of control, and ending up on the side of the road.

Then, a dramatic exchange of gunfire erupts between the officers and Bates.

Bates eventually died from his injuries; no law enforcement officers were hurt.

"There is no doubt in my mind this guy would have killed someone before the day was over," Sheriff Gee added.
