JUST IN: Pardon paperwork for Sheriff Joe ready for Trump’s signature
Annetta Griffee
August 23, 2017
President Trump told reporters approximately 10 days ago that he was seriously considering a pardon for former Arizona sheriff Joe Arpaio, saying, “He’s a great American patriot and I hate to see what has happened to him.”
It was first expected that Trump may be planning to announce a pardon for Arpaio while attending his rally in Phoenix Tuesday, but the White House announced prior to the rally that no pardon would be issued there.
However, Wednesday morning, a report came out from CNN that stated the White House has prepared the necessary paperwork for Arpaio’s pardon, which includes talking points stating that it is inappropriate to jail Arpaio for “enforcing the law” and “working to keep people safe.” Another talking point reportedly prepared is the fact that Arpaio served his country for 50 years in the military.
Arpaio, 85, was found “guilty” by U.S. District Judge Susan Bolton of “criminal contempt” on Monday, July 31, for violating a federal judge’s order in 2011 to stop traffic patrols targeting suspected illegal aliens in which he was accused of racial profiling. His sentencing is scheduled for Oct. 5 and could result in up to six months behind the very bars which he previously used to detain illegal aliens.
After his conviction, Arpaio published a lengthy letter that subsequently went viral, in which he noted the irony under which he had been convicted because he had cooperated with federal law enforcement agencies when he encountered illegal aliens. Now, the current Department of Justice is going after local law enforcement agencies who don’t cooperate with ICE in enforcing illegal alien laws, he observed.
When speaking to a Fox News reporter on Aug. 13, President Trump stated, “Is there anyone in local law enforcement who has done more to crack down on illegal immigration than Sheriff Joe? He has protected people from crimes and saved lives. He doesn’t deserve to be treated this way.”

President Trump hinted at his rally in Phoenix, Arizona, Tuesday night that a pardon for the former sheriff was imminent, saying, “I won’t do it tonight, because I don’t want to cause any controversy, but Sheriff Joe can feel good.”

He hasn't been sentenced yet, until that happens, there is nothing to pardon.
