Carly Fiorina, the former CEO of Hewlett-Packard and onetime U.S. Senate candidate, announced Monday she will seek the Republican nomination for president in the 2016 election.

Fiorina is the first female candidate to officially jump in on the Republican side. Sens. Ted Cruz (Texas), Rand Paul (Ky.) and Marco Rubio (Fla.), and celebrated neurosurgeon Ben Carson have also announced their candidacies.

"Our founders never intended us to have a professional political class, they believed that citizens and leaders needed to step forward," she said in a video posted to her website. "We know the only way to reimagine our government is to reimagine who is leading it."

Fiorina served as HP's chief executive from 1999 to 2005, making history as the first woman to run a Fortune 50 company. She was a polarizing figure at the Palo Alto-based firm: While revenues doubled under Fiorina's leadership, her tenure was also marked by thousands of layoffs, internal clashes and missed earning targets. Fiorina was eventually ousted by HP's board after a controversial merger with Compaq that pitted her against the Hewlett family.

Despite her mixed legacy, Fiorina has made her time at HP the focus of her nascent campaign.

"HP requires executive decision-making and the presidency is all about executive decision-making," Fiorina told CNN earlier this year.

After leaving HP, she served on the boards of several companies, including Kellogg Co., and became a Fox News contributor. Later, she was an economic adviser to Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) during his 2008 presidential campaign, and was floated as a potential running mate.

In 2010, Fiorina ran for Senate, seeking to unseat Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.). In that race, Fiorina ran on her business record, seeking to portray Boxer as a wealthy Washington insider. However, the incumbent Democrat took on Fiorina's HP tenure, criticizing her for laying off thousands of employees and moving jobs overseas. Boxerwent on to beat Fiorina by 10 points. Fiorina, who contributed $5 million to her own campaign, left the race with about $500,000 in debt.

Last year, Fiorina began laying the groundwork for a 2016 bid, visiting several early primary states and hiring campaign staff.

In recent months, she's spent time courting voters in Iowa and lined up speaking engagements across the country.

While she has yet to fully articulate a campaign platform, Fiorina has thus far stuck to her pro-business message. She has criticized President Barack Obama's handling of the economy, saying he does not deserve credit for the recovery. In addition, Fiorina has frequently taken on Democratic presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton, questioning the legitimacy of donations made to the Clinton family's charitable foundation as well as Clinton's accomplishments as secretary of state.

"Hillary Clinton must not be president of the United States -- but not because she’s a woman,” Fiorina said in Iowa last month. "Hillary Clinton cannot be president of the United States because she is not trustworthy. And while she has held many titles, she hasn't accomplished very much."

On gay rights, which is emerging as a key issue for 2016 hopefuls, Fiorina has taken a somewhat softer tone than many others in the GOP field. While she stops short of backing same-sex marriage, she says she supports civil unions as well as providing government benefits to gay couples. However, Fiorina has maintained a hard-line stance against abortion, and claimed last month that conservatives are "winning" the fight over reproductive rights.

Although she hasn't served in public office, Fiorina maintains that her business background will give her an edge -- along with the fact that she is likely to be the only woman in a crowded GOP field.

“Realistically,” she told Bloomberg Politics, “everything about me is different than anybody else running. My experience is different, my resume is different, my perspective is different, my voice is different. Oh, by the way, my gender is different.”

This statement highlights how far the GOP has fallen from its laissez-faire foundation of "leave the people alone". To brag in a presidential campaign that our party is "winning the fight" over a girl or woman's right to determine when or if they have a child is not a victory, it's a sad epitaph.

And to support civil unions, which is fine and good, but oppose gay marriage, is like the candidates who oppose illegal immigration but want to give illegal aliens amnesty and a pathway to citizenship.

Positions like these are not campaigns to victory, they are self-delusional schemes to appease peculiar religious beliefs that threaten if not destroy the life, liberty and pursuit of happiness of women who want to terminate an unwanted pregnancy or gay couples who want to marry in our country, basic inalienable rights that are the essence of being a free person in the United States as defined by our Declaration of Independence and which all Americans should support, even if as in all matters, they may personally believe they disagree with the choice until they need it.

Voters in 2016 are looking for sanity and reason in the candidates. Voters want to see our rights protected, our economy rebuilt, unneeded immigration stopped, our borders secured and the role of government in our lives significantly reduced.

From what I've read so far about your positions, Carly, I am sad to say I'm not seeing any of it from your candidacy. How or why you would think that running Hewlett-Packard into the ground is a resume for running for President of the United States is truly beyond me, unless you had something else to bring to the table, which so far you're making clear you do not.

She supported the Dream Act which conveys a path to citizenship. Her positions on immigration seem to me to be ride the tide. She's for the Dream Act and citizenship for illegal aliens, then states she doesn't think that's fair to legal immigrants, but of course fails to mention US citizens and what is fair or unfair to us, which of course at the present time is all immigration. She wants to secure the border first, then develop a plan for what to do with the illegal aliens that are already here, which of course by the time the border is secured will be decades from now if not an infinity. She like so many fail to grasp that until the United States deports every single illegal alien in the country, the border will never be secure. And at what point in her run for the Presidency does she think is an appropriate time to tell US what her plan is regarding the 20 million or more illegal aliens in the country? She's already come out in favor of more immigration, wants to fast track it, make it easier, when we in fact need a Moratorium. In her race for US Senate, she openly supported a "guest worker program".

Immigration made our nation great. The United States is blessed with a diverse population with diverse backgrounds and diverse beliefs. However, illegal immigration has eroded Americans’ trust in government, threatened our national security and hurt our fellow Californians.
Carly believes that the solution to our nation’s illegal immigration problem must begin with securing our borders. Without secure borders, we cannot begin to have a rational discussion about immigration policy. Technology holds great potential to help in our nation’s security efforts, and Carly believes we should use every tool at our disposal to ensure our borders are secure.
At the same time, Carly is also committed to developing an effective visa program and temporary worker program to support legal immigrants who fulfill important roles in our nation’s economy. We have no "dire employment needs". We already have a temporary visa program for seasonal agricultural employees. We issue more green cards to people "who did it the right way" than we have jobs, money and resources to support them. We already have more visas for STEM workers, than jobs for them, so the visa workers are replacing American workers and growing unemployment in the United States.

Carly's not the answer on immigration or much else that I can see, and I wish she was, but she chose not to be.

The former HP executive draws a line in the sand on immigration

If Carly Fiorina becomes president, the immigrants currently in the country illegally would face an additional hurdle in their quest for U.S. citizenship.

During a wide-ranging interview with Yahoo's Katie Couric, the former Hewlett-Packard CEO was asked if she favored providing a path to citizenship for the roughly 11 million immigrants in the country illegally.

"I do not. Not for those who came here illegally and who have stayed here illegally," said Fiorina, who announced her candidacy for the Republican nomination earlier in the day.

Unlike former Florida Governor Jeb Bush, Kentucky Senator Rand Paul, and Florida Senator Marco Rubio, all of whom have expressed some degree of openness to creating a framework that would allow undocumented immigrants to eventually obtain citizenship, Fiorina said she would draw the line at offering "legal status."

"Half the people here illegally came on a legal visa–we just never bothered to follow up," Fiorina said. "But for those who came here illegally and stayed here illegally, I think they may earn legal status over time, but not citizenship, because I know too many people, as do you, who worked to earn the right of citizenship, the privilege of citizenship, and I think we're fair-minded people."

Like most candidates in the growing GOP presidential field, Fiorina also emphasized the need to secure the U.S. borders with Mexico and Canada.

"It's not rocket science to do it, we just haven't done it, northern borders and southern borders," Fiorina said. "I think we need to fix the legal immigration system, which has been broken for decades, under both Republicans and Democrats. You know we talk about it but somehow it never gets done."

Asked about support for the Dream Act, which would establish permanent U.S. residency for the children of immigrants brought to the country by their parents under the age of 16, Fiorina again emphasized that border security should take priority.

"In California, I supported the Dream Act because I think that you cannot punish children who came here through no will of there own as young children, but I also think we have the cart backwards, when we pass something called the Dream Act before we've even secured the border all we're doing is making the problem worse," Fiorina said. "And also, we corrode peoples' faith in government. Folks out there say, you know what, the federal government's first job, honestly, is to protect the nation and secure the border, why don't you secure the border, you could, we should, we haven't."

While neither Couric nor Fiornia discussed the costs of securing both the northern and southern borders, a 2013 report by Bloomberg found that maintaining border security with Mexico would cost $28 billion per year.

Hey, Carly, that's amnesty for illegal aliens, that's the position we're fighting against, that's the reason our borders aren't secure and why we have 20 million or more illegal aliens in the United States. Carly, NEWSFLASH: Our northern and southern borders are too long to be physically secured. If you believe otherwise, you need to get a new drug of choice.

Here's the good news: Most illegals sneak into our country to get better jobs or more money for the jobs that the're already doing in their own countries. All we have to do, to control our northern and southern borders, is to enact Universal E-Verify. That will control those borders, and will do it for pennies on the enforcement dollar.

Yep, you're right, she is talking about giving illegals legal status, which is amnesty! The following can only be understood to mean that:

In a nutshell, she says illegals should be able to earn legal status in time and she supports the DREAM Act. Gaining any type of legal status is amnesty. IMO, she's a non-player on the immigration front.
