Peter King: ‘Vile’ phone calls by Ted Cruz allies

King says the callers need to know 'they're following a false leader.
Rep. Peter King, who has pulled no punches in criticizing Ted Cruz, said Thursday that supporters of the Texas senator have been bombarding his office with “vile” phone calls.

The New York Republican has called Cruz a fraud for his calls to defund Obamacare, and said the senator’s campaign this summer to get the House to pass a government funding bill that defunds the health care law led to some offensive phone calls to King’s office.

“The vehemence of the phone calls coming into the office. I don’t care, people can call me whatever they want … I haven’t heard such vile, profane, obscene language,” King said on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” on Thursday.

King said while the majority of Cruz fans are “good people,” he’s concerned about what sentiments Cruz has preyed on. While he doesn’t know if Republicans can reach Cruz, they should try to “heal tensions” with his supporters, he said.

“I’m not saying Ted Cruz is responsible for all his supporters, but he has tapped into a dark strain here in the American political psyche here, and again, the most obscene, profane stuff you can imagine all from people who say they support the Constitution,” King said. “I think what we have to do is reach out to his people and let them know that they’re following a false leader here.”

King is a RINO and there's nothing conservative about him that I can see. He should change parties. He has said ugly things about Cruz, when at the moment Cruz is one of the few republicans actually listening to the people on the obamacare issue.

Rep. Peter T. King said Thursday that Sen. Ted Cruz is a “false leader” who is peddling a “false bill of goods” in the debate over defunding Obamacare and said Mr. Cruz, Texas Republican, has tapped into a “dark strain in the American political psyche.”
Mr. King, New York Republican, said Mr. Cruz’s approach to defunding the Affordable Care Act is doomed to fail and is fueled by the the belief that if lawmakers don’t defund a law “that he doesn’t like, we are going to shut down the government.”

“I don’t think it is possible to heal tensions with Ted Cruz,” Mr. King said on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.” “Hopefully we can heal tensions with some of his supporters. The reason I say that is that he seems intent on doing whatever he has to do without regard to either the party or, quite frankly, to the Senate. So I think what we have to do is reach out to his people and let them know that they are following a false leader here.”
The comments followed the Cruz-led 21-hour filibuster that aimed to ramp up pressure on lawmakers to reject any spending bills that included funding for Obamacare and to do whatever they can to kill the new health care law. The effort drew support from a small group of conservatives in the Senate and fired up grass-roots conservatives and tea party activists around the country.
Mr. King said that Mr. Cruz’s talkathon coincided with an increase in the vehemence of the phone calls coming into his office, where young women got earfuls from people who claimed to be constitutional conservatives.
“I haven’t heard such vile, profane, obscene language,” Mr. King said. “I’m not saying that Ted Cruz is responsible for all his supporters, but he has tapped into a dark strain in the American political psyche.”
