Government seems to have double standard on immigration

Government seems to have double standard on immigration
    August 6, 2010 12:36 am

I WATCHED a network newsman interview an admitted illegal immigrant in Arizona the other night and the immigrant complained that his rights were being violated by that state's new "check-status" law.

Hey! Wait a minute! What rights is this guy talking about? He is not an American citizen. He's not even in the country legally. And he's screaming about his rights being violated?

I have to say that I am getting tired of hearing about the rights of illegal immigrants. These people have the right to be treated humanely and with due respect, but beyond that I don't see what other rights they have.

And I am getting tired of the double standard that has cropped up during the past decade concerning legal and illegal immigrants.

Take the two following incidents, for example.

Last year, a woman from Canada who had been teaching at a local high school got sent home when her work visa ran out. She had gone to college in the United States and had a guaranteed job.

Still, she was told that there were only a certain amount of work visas for Canadians and that no more were available. The woman had no choice but to go back.

I had another friend who married a British man about five years ago and couldn't get him into the country until last year. Once he got here, the guy couldn't return to England for a year without losing his immigration status.

Compare that to the incident in Prince William County earlier this week in which an illegal immigrant from Bolivia who was allegedly driving drunk hit a car with three nuns and killed one of them. According to reports, he had been cited for drunken driving on two previous occasions and had no driver's license. He had not been deported, but rather turned loose on his own recognizance.

Say what you will, but those examples constitute a double standard in my book. There are quotas for those who come in legally, but others can illegally slip in and out of the country almost at will. I don't buy that attitude.

I also cannot accept this notion that these people have been in the country illegally for 10 years so let's just make them legal.

Suppose you came home one night and found that some stranger had slipped into your house without your permission.

The guy said he came in because your house was nicer than his house and that he would work for you while he was there.

You say, "No! This is my house. If you had come to the front door and asked for a job, I might have hired you. But to slip in illegally? No way!"

Now the man stiffens his resistance and replies, "Even if I came in illegally, I have the right to stay in your house and you cannot throw me out!"

You call the authorities and they tell you they can't do anything about it, so why not just let the guy stay?

So he stays and 10 years later, whether you like it or not, the government makes this illegal intruder an official member of your household.

That, in a nutshell, seems to be how the immigration system works in many cases these days.

Anyone who comes to this country legally is entitled to all the rights and privileges the United States has to offer. However, all should remember that they are visitors in a foreign country, not citizens of the United State.

But illegal immigrants--from whatever country--have no such rights, as far as I can see.

For two decades, I have stood in defense of those who have come to this country in a legal manner. And I have hesitated to speak out against those who illegally cross our southern border to find work.

But I draw the line when those who come into this country illegally roar with arrogance and demand their American rights.

Excuse me, but aside from those previously stated, I don't think you have any!

I know of a woman who entered the country many years ago legally on a visa (all of her family is here), and has followed the law by going back every three months to renew her visa; she has been doing this for decades. She would like permanent status and wants to apply for citizenship, but has been refused as they have deemed that she would be a burden due to health problems (she is in her mid seventies now and has paid for her own health care all of her life, not once imposing on this country for her care).

Yet we pay through the nose for illegal immigrants, both with our money and our lives.

    It has to stop!

Ratbastard, I have a feeling that many journalists come here for an education, a story line, plus the opposition.
