GOP 'trying to nullify' Trump's election

Bannon: GOP 'trying to nullify' Trump's election

    By Daniella Diaz, CNN
Updated 11:27 PM ET, Sun September 10, 2017

Washington (CNN)Former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon claimed "the Republican establishment is trying to nullify the 2016 election" in an interview that aired on CBS's "60 Minutes" Sunday night.

Naming Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and House Speaker Paul Ryan specifically, Bannon told CBS's Charlie Rose:

"They do not want Donald Trump's populist, economic nationalist agenda to be implemented. It's very obvious."

Bannon recalled a meeting with McConnell in Trump Tower, when the Kentucky Republican asked Trump to clamp down on his "drain-the-swamp" rhetoric.

"Oh, Mitch McConnell when we first met him, I mean, he said -- I think in one of the first meetings in Trump Tower with the President -- as we're wrapping up, he basically says, 'I don't want to hear any more of this 'drain-the-swamp' talk,'" Bannon recalled. "He says, 'I can't -- I can't hire any smart people,' because everybody's all over him for reporting requirements and -- and the pay, et cetera, and the scrutiny. You know, 'You gotta back off that.'"

Asked about attacking the very people Trump needs to enact his agenda, Bannon said GOP leaders won't provide such help "unless they're put on notice."

"They're going to be held accountable if they do not support the President of the United States," he said. "Right now there's no accountability. ... They do not support the President's program. It's an open secret on Capitol Hill. Everybody in this city knows it."

Neither McConnell nor Ryan's offices immediately responded to CNN requests for comment about Bannon's remarks.

Bannon criticized the House and Senate leadership for what he said was their overpromising and underdelivering on health care, saying they told the White House that they would repeal and replace Obamacare in the first few months of the administration and the new Congress before moving on to a tax overhaul by summer and infrastructure legislation by year's end -- none of which, as of yet, has happened.

While Bannon said he does not entirely blame the Republican leaders for their inability to move such major legislation, he said they were unaware of the divisions within their own party.

"There is wide discrepancy in the Republican Party, as we know today, now that we're in it," Bannon said. "But I will tell you, leadership didn't know it at the time. They didn't know it 'til the very end."

Bannon was ousted in mid-August amid a reshuffling of power within the White House, just a few weeks after retired Marine Corps Gen. John Kelly took over as chief of staff with a goal of instilling order in a chaotic operation beset by internal divisions, staff infighting and a storm of controversies.

Bannon has since returned to his role as executive chairman at the conservative online publication Breitbart News, a job he held before joining Trump's campaign. Sunday's interview is the first time has spoken out publicly since his firing.

His exit meant one of the White House's most controversial staffers, the man generally perceived as the driving force behind Trump's "nationalist" ideology, would no longer be at the center of the Trump universe.

I don't agree with Bannon on that. I don't think it's the GOP. It's just some people who vote Republican, the Never-Trumpers, the free traders, the amnesty lovers, globalists, etc. But they aren't the majority of our party, that's why Trump won.

My premise has been for decades, there are no republicans or democrats. They are all one party.

The so called republicans mostly tried their best to keep Pres. Trump from being elected and when he was, because that's what the people wanted, they set about making sure he couldn't get anything done.

They aren't working for us, never have.

We need a strong third party - maybe four parties. We need an opportunity to be able to vote for the man rather than the perceived party.

McConnell statement about 'draining the swamp' reminds me of a young politician I saw interviewed some years ago.

He said he was all fired up to do good, got elected from his home state. He said he went up their to get to work.

An old, entrenched politician of his own party took him aside and told him they would let him introduce a few bills, make some speeches, etc.

He ended by saying, "Just don't try to do anything that gets in my pocket."

It's very hard to do that, we just need to clean up the GOP. Wonderful party, grand history, has done so much for our country and citizens, we need more Americans to join this party, common sense Americans.

The only way we can fix the republican side of the party is to replace them all, then maybe do it again and again.

The republicans who have been up there very long already owe their souls to whoever is running things.

Both sides of the party were absolutely aghast that the people would vote for Pres. Trump when they certainly did not want him. I think it scared a lot of people.

They are so corrupt, and owned by someone/something, they aren't even pretending to work with the President that we, the people, elected.

We are nothing to them - only their masters matter. They have made that abundantly clear.

Yeah, I know. Our President so hopeful and energetic out the gate has been grandly disappointed by Congress. Hopefully things will get better and they can pass the needed legislation to help iTrump help US fix our country.

I had/have my doubts about Pres. Trump being for real.

One thing that has gone a long way to making me think he is, is the way everyone is against him. Think about it, the democrats, the republicans, the news media, the colleges, many companies. Everyone and everything that is against what I believe in.

They must have been very frightened that he would actually fix some of the horrible things that has been going on.

It's possible they were so afraid if he did succeed on just some of the things, the American people would again believe in themselves. They might just decide to vote in good people, refuse to do business with these people who hire illegals, etc.

Maybe, after all, it wasn't Pres. Trump they were so afraid of, but the American people. They believe, and possibly so, if they can defeat or tie up the President, we will loose faith in ourselves and our ability to do anything.

Why else would they be so frightened, if he wasn't the real deal. Why else would they try so hard to destroy him.

I'm not saying I'm not disappointed, but I do think his ideas, mostly, are very good.

No reason to be disappointed in Trump, nntrixie. He's real, he's wanted these things fixed for decades, hoped someone else would do it, but no one ever did. If he could and would try, he had to run in 2016. He doesn't want anything except to fix our country. I just read an article today that he doesn't even have his picture up in the federal buildings yet. He's in this for one reason and that's to solve our problems to the best of his ability. We may not always understand right away the way in which he's trying to get something done often having to overcome some obstacles that we may not even know about. And, we may not get everything we want and need, it takes 3 branches to make a lot of that happen, and he only controls one. I desperately want the FairTax, but he passed on that even though he likes it and would accomplish so much of what he's trying to do, he didn't think it could pass fast enough and went with tax cuts instead, but even the tax cuts aren't going fast. He's very disappointed about that as well as with the big fail of Obamacare repeal in the Senate.
