Trump falsely claims he never told House Republicans to vote for immigration bill

President Donald Trump falsely claimed on Saturday that he never encouraged House Republicans to vote for an immigration bill, despite tweeting such an encouragement three days earlier.

"I never pushed the Republicans in the House to vote for the Immigration Bill, either GOODLATTE 1 or 2, because it could never have gotten enough Democrats as long as there is the 60 vote threshold," the president wrote on Twitter. "I released many prior to the vote knowing we need more Republicans to win in Nov."

Trump explicitly called for Republicans to support Virginia Rep. Bob Goodlatte‘s bill on Wednesday with an all-caps Twitter endorsement.

"HOUSE REPUBLICANS SHOULD PASS THE STRONG BUT FAIR IMMIGRATION BILL, KNOWN AS GOODLATTE II, IN THEIR AFTERNOON VOTE TODAY, EVEN THOUGH THE DEMS WON’T LET IT PASS IN THE SENATE," Trump wrote on Twitter before the Wednesday vote. "PASSAGE WILL SHOW THAT WE WANT STRONG BORDERS & SECURITY WHILE THE DEMS WANT OPEN BORDERS = CRIME. WIN!"

At the time, House Republicans were trying to gather votes to pass a compromise bill that they were hoping would draw support from both conservatives and moderates in their conference. The proposal was expected to fail beforehand and did so by an overwhelming 121-301 vote.

Trump‘s position on the bill wavered several times before it even came to a vote, with the president at one point saying he wouldn’t sign the bill. He also said last week that the Republicans’ bill wouldn’t pass the Senate. By Wednesday he had tweeted his support.

The president’s reversal Saturday comes as he has sent a number of tweets during his weekend in New Jersey, ranging from news about his Supreme Court appointment to thoughts on progressive outrage over the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency and even encouragement to buy former White House press secretary Sean Spicer's new book.

Trump is in Bedminster for the weekend with his family, although he may mix in some work with possible interviews with people on his shortlist for Supreme Court seat.

Trump did lie. He also lied about ending DACA on day one of his administration. Instead, he started expressing sympathy for the DACAs. All he has done is encourage more illegal immigration. I guess we are now a government based on mob rule. They should ignore all these silly protests. They should send the National Guard or the Army down to the border and treat those people like the invaders they are. All both parties think about is getting elected again. If Trump thinks people like me who voted for him because of illegal immigration are going to vote for him again, he is sadly mistaken.

Safe Zones in Syria

Russia, Iran, and Turkey agreed Thursday to set them up, despite criticism from some Syrian rebels.

Russia, Iran, and Turkey have agreed to a memorandum establishing four safe zones across the north, central, and southern parts of Syria, constituting a major advancement in the nation’s ongoing civil war. Russia released the memorandum Thursday at peace talks in Astana, Kazakhstan. Russia and Iran are allied with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, while Turkey is allied with some of the rebel groups fighting against Assad. By signing a memorandum, the three nations aim to establish a cease-fire that would mitigate conflict between Assad’s government forces and insurgent groups.

In theory, safe zones offer refuge and humanitarian aid to displaced persons fleeing violence, though it is uncertain how the three nations expect to monitor the newly established zones. A safe-zone strategy has garnered criticism in the past for serving as a band-aid solution to the refugee crisis while failing to address the root of the Syrian conflict. Historically, safe zones have even become targets for increased violence. With Russia and the Assad government capable of intervening militarily at any given moment, many fear a “safe zone” designation carries little weight. Since the start of the Syrian conflict in May 2011, the Assad government has violated numerous cease-fire agreements.

As president, Barack Obama opposed the use of safe zones due, in part, to the war’s unpredictable nature. President Trump, however, has frequently voiced his support for the strategy.

On Thursday, U.N. Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura referred to the memorandum as an “important, promising, positive step in the right direction,” though not everyone involved in the peace talks agreed with this statement. Reuters reports that representatives from the armed Syrian opposition angrily stormed out of the room in response to the memorandum. In a statement, Osama Abu Zeid, a rebel group spokesman who was present at the talks in Astana, criticized safe zones for failing to guarantee “the unity of the Syrian territory.” Zeid also dissented to Iran’s participation in the memorandum, calling the nation and the pro-Assad militias it supports “aggressors.”

Russian negotiator Aleksandr Lavrentyev shared a more positive view, informing Russian media that the nation will be sending observers to the newly created safe zones. Lavrentyev also expressed a desire to “work more closely” with the United States and Saudi Arabia to achieve peace in the region. Still, his language incited speculation regarding the terms of the memorandum.

At a news conference, Lavrentyev said the Assad government would honor the memorandum, which becomes effective on Saturday, so long as rebel groups did not carry out attacks in the four safe zones. At the same conference, Lavrentyev said the Syrian Air Force would avoid the zones. According to the New York Times, critics viewed Lavrentyev’s comments as a “loophole that allows violations committed by Mr. Assad’s side.”

In a statement, the U.S. State Department, which was represented at the talks by Acting Assistant Secretary Stuart Jones, said: “We appreciate the efforts of Turkey and the Russian Federation to pursue this agreement and have encouraged the Syrian opposition to participate actively in the discussions despite the difficult conditions on the ground.” The statement added: “We continue to have concerns about the Astana agreement, including the involvement of Iran as a so-called ‘guarantor.’ Iran’s activities in Syria have only contributed to the violence, not stopped it, and Iran’s unquestioning support for the Assad regime has perpetuated the misery of ordinary Syrians.”

Yes, that's why he's setting up the meeting with Putin to put the final deal into place in Syria so we can pull our troops and resources out of there and start sending these Syrians back home. Trump wants to make sure Iran stays out of control of Syria and thinks Russia can assure that, and they can and probably want to do that as well. Russia hates terrorists as much as we do and doesn't want crazy Iran messing in Syria where Russia has that huge Naval Base. Saudi has also agreed to help with money.

When we are overwhelmed with false, or potentially false, statements, our brains pretty quickly become so overworked that we stop trying to sift through everything.

Our brains are particularly ill-equipped to deal with lies when they come not singly but in a constant stream, and Trump, we know, lies constantly, about matters as serious as the election results and as trivial as the tiles at Mar-a-Lago. (According to his butler, Anthony Senecal, Trump once said the tiles in a nursery at the West Palm Beach club had been made by Walt Disney himself; when Senecal protested, Trump had a single response: “Who cares?”)

When we are overwhelmed with false, or potentially false, statements, our brains pretty quickly become so overworked that we stop trying to sift through everything. It’s called cognitive load—our limited cognitive resources are overburdened. It doesn’t matter how implausible the statements are; throw out enough of them, and people will inevitably absorb some.

Eventually, without quite realizing it, our brains just give up trying to figure out what is true.

But Trump goes a step further. If he has a particular untruth he wants to propagate—not just an undifferentiated barrage—he simply states it, over and over. As it turns out, sheer repetition of the same lie can eventually mark it as true in our heads. It’s an effect known as illusory truth, first discovered in the ’70s and most recently demonstrated with the rise of fake news.

In its original demonstration, a group of psychologists had people rate statements as true or false on three different occasions over a two-week period. Some of the statements appeared only once, while others were repeated. The repeated statements were far more likely to be judged as true the second and third time they appeared—regardless of their actual validity.

Keep repeating that there was serious voter fraud, and the idea begins to seep into people’s heads. Repeat enough times that you were against the war in Iraq, and your actual record on it somehow disappears.

Trump to House GOP: Send me an immigration bill

Trump told the GOP Conference during a closed-door meeting that he would accept either of two competing immigration bills slated for a vote this week. Many Republicans said they interpreted his words as support for a measure negotiated among GOP leaders, moderate Republicans and conservatives. Leaders were to whip votes for the carefully crafted package on Tuesday night.



"I'm with you 100 percent!" Trump told them, later adding, “I will not leave you in the wilderness.” . . .

There you have it! He didn't leave them, he gave them each a Tweet.

From what I have seen they became concentration camps where Russian and Syrian could drop bombs and nerve agents.

I don't care. They started this evil civil war, maybe it's time to pay a little price for all the deaths they caused.

Let's just hope he isn't purposely attempting to deceive us like he is on the border wall lie. Perhaps he just went through a temporary bout of forgetfulness and/or confusion. You're right though, it's not considered normal to actually deny something said days apart when the evidence of your lie is fresh on folks mind.
