Trump floats September shutdown for 'border security'

Washington (CNN)President Donald Trump told supporters at a speech on Saturday that if Congress did not meet his funding demands for border security, he may support a government shutdown this fall.

Trump was speaking in Washington Township, Michigan, at the same time that the White House correspondents' dinner was taking place back in Washington, DC, with some lawmakers and current and former members of his administration in attendance. During his remarks, he alluded to the appropriations deadline at the end of September.

"We have to have borders, and we have to have them fast," he said. "And we need security. We need the wall. We're going to have it all. And again, that wall has started. We got 1.6 billion. We come up again on September 28th, and if we don't get border security, we'll have no choice. We'll close down the country because we need border security."

Despite his campaign pledge to make Mexico pay for his proposed wall on the US-Mexico border, Trump has demanded that Congress fund the project. Last month, he signed a bill that funds the government through September after expressing frustration with a spending package that included $1.6 billion for border security, but not the wall.

In his speech Saturday night, Trump railed against the Democratic Party on a range of issues, including immigration.
"A vote for a Democrat in November is a vote for open borders and crime," Trump said.

He continued, "The open border policies of the Democratic Party are not just wrong, they're dangerous, and they're in fact deadly. They're deadly."

That's his plan??? Shut the gov't down in the fall to get funding $$$ for the wall???? There are a slew of lawsuits upcoming over territory rights, eminent domain, environmental, endangered species habitat destruction. Cement walls take years to build, many want a see thru barrier anyway.
This is going nowhere.

Close the border NOW trump - wake up - use your pen - no more asylums - no more catch & release - bounce them right back out. He will continue this tens of thousands a month, that we know of, entering???

He is asleep at the wheel on this issue. NO talk of taxing remittances either. No talk of stopping the job magnet by enforcing E-Verify for every job. It seems this is all the same old stall game "nobody able to do anything" as the CHEAP LABOR keeps coming in, then comes the anchor babies. Nothing being done @ that clarification issue either.

Yes, the open border policies of the Democratic Party are all of those things. VOTE REPUBLICAN IN 2018 so we can pass the immigration and border security legislation we need to fix this disaster.

There's a misquote in the article, Trump didn't say he would shut down the "government", he said he would shut down "the country". He may have been referring to shutting down the borders, not the government. He'll have the troop build up on the border completed in September.

Maybe by then we'll also have the US Supreme Court Ruling on the Trump Travel Ban, which would give him authority to ban invaders with or without papers based on national security issues.

We need AMERICAN RESOLVE shown on this steadily and consistently.

We are in crisis NOW. We have been for decades. Secure the borders. No more illegal aliens. No asylum seekers cross through Mexico to get to the United States. Mexico has no fear to stop any of this.

You're absolutely right, GeorgiaPeach, it is a crisis and has been for a very long time. How America holds up under the weight of the burdens from this crisis I do not know, but we can't hold up any longer. It all has to end. Reason and sanity must be restored to an irrational insane immigration policy.

I'm still scratching my head over Trump's promise to have Mexico pay for the wall. What action has he taken to facilitate the paying of a wall by the Mexican government? I've seen or heard nothing to that end. There has been nothing mentioned in connection with this and the NAFTA negotiations. Actually the Trump administration has not been transparent at all on their so-called ongoing NAFTA negotiations. The American public has seen or heard nothing concerning details of the negotiations. As far as we know these NAFTA negotiations may end up being nothing more than NAFTA 2.0. It's no secret that Trump has business interest in Mexico and Canada. Furthermore, I remember reading somewhere that 500 corporate business interest were consulted while labor organizations where completely shut out when the negotiations began. Just wanted to throw this out there before someone comes up and says, "Well, maybe the money will come directly or indirectly from the new NAFTA deal." Personally, I think NAFTA should have been dumped before new negotiations were even started.

Why hasn't the Trump administration attempted to increase the boarder crossing card fees, Mexican immigrant visas application fees (to include the H-2A visas), taxed remittances, increased fines to businesses hiring illegals with a portion of the fine allocated directly to the wall, funneling a percentage of money seized from drug cartels off the top before it ends up in the Treasury Department, etc.? I don't know what if any of the before mentioned is in Trump's power to do, but surely he can be more creative that he has been to date.

I don't think Trump can create taxes on anything, so any new tax requires an act of Congress. The only way Trump can raise money that could be put in place to pay for the wall is with tariffs through a NAFTA re-do, and even then, the new NAFTA will probably require some type of approval from Congress, if the changes are dramatic.
