Sen. Sessions: I Can Still Back Trump on Immigration

    Thursday, August 25, 2016 12:48 PM
    By: Sandy Fitzgerald

Alabama Republican Sen. Jeff Sessions said Thursday he can back Donald Trump's policies on immigration, even though the GOP nominee has been criticized for softening his stance on deporting undocumented immigrants living in the United States.

"I think what he's saying is let's prove — the weakness in so many of the plans that have been offered over the years is they've given amnesty first and promised enforcement in the future," Sessions told Fox News' "Fox & Friends" program. "He's saying, let's fix this problem, let's fix it and then we'll wrestle with the people who have been here a long time."

In a town hall meeting hosted by Fox News' Sean Hannity, Trump spoke of remaining against amnesty for undocumented immigrants, but instead said his administration would "work with them."

The comments were a shift from Trump's earlier declarations about deporting immigrants and only allowing them back into the United States when they followed steps to legally come back into the country.

"The most important thing is to focus first and foremost on a lawful system that protects the interests of the American people first," Sessions told Fox News Thursday. "If you enter the country unlawfully you're subject to being deported. That's just what the law has always been. But we have large number of people that have been here a very long time."

And, Sessions said he can be supportive of such a plan, but warned about the "rule of law," referring to the 1986 Immigration Reform and Control Act, signed into law by then-President Ronald Reagan.

That law failed, in part, because of lax border security, and the nation went from an estimated 3 million living in the United States illegally up to the current total of about 11 million, and that can't happen in the future, said Sessions.

"You've get to be careful about how you handle it," he told the program. "We have to work our way through it. It's essential for America. I think Donald Trump is moving us in the right direction. If you want to secure the border and improve our immigration system, fix it, there's only one way: vote in November."

Clinton, though, wants to increase immigration across the board, said Sessions, and her policies "actually undermine enforcement."

"Hillary Clinton is the extreme. Instead of 10,000 refugees from Syria, 65,000. She wants to increase the immigration across the board. And her policies actually undermine enforcement. It cannot work, so this is open borders really versus a real establishment of law."

Trump campaign manager Kellyanne Conway told CNN's Chris Cuomo that Sessions is working on his new message on immigration with Trump, who calls for an border wall, and Stephen Miller, a Trump adviser and former Sessions staff worker.

The two men are "immigration experts," she told him. "I think that they are trying to find a way to explain — well, for Donald Trump to articulate to Americans a very complex issue and how he feels about it."

I am saddened and disappointed to read that Senator Sessions said the past plans have given amnesty first as if amnesty is ever acceptable. We know the amnesty under President Reagan kept going, around 6 or 7 rolling amnesties, granting it to millions and millions more. It will take a long time to build the wall and the enforcement and deportation must be the primary focus.

The promises under Reagan did not materialize but the millions kept coming. The illegal aliens have broken our laws and paying back taxes is not going to ever make up for their costs. They will keep sending money out of the United States in the billions.

So the amnesty under President Reagan will have been continued for thirty years when you combine the amnesties after 1986 and you work your way backwards for the 15-20 years Trump seems to open the door to supporting now, and that Senator Sessions doesn't seem to reject in total. Stephen Miller must be conflicted internally as he helps write the amnesty talk.

How can you enforce the laws and use EVerify if you are saying that those who have been here a long time can possibly stay. We keep being betrayed and again have to choose getting something or nothing. Donald Trump says to build the wall there will be obstacles. That wall that has been promised again and again.

Maybe he is attempting to say something is better than nothing and Donald Trump is the only game in town that is offering us something. I don't speak for everybody, but for me amnesty in any form is unacceptable. I believe there is more than just words going on here. Someone has convinced Trump that winning the election will require concessions. That's just my take on it at this minute. Perhaps something will come out over the next day or two that will give us more clarity.

Sessions: Trump Didn't Commit to a 'Deportation Force'

By Cathy Burke | Sunday, 21 Aug 2016 01:22 PM

Donald Trump didn't make a "firm commitment" to top Hispanic advisers about whether he'd follow through on a campaign promise to deport 11 million illegal immigrants, Sen Jeff Sessions said Sunday.

In an interview on CBS News' "Face The Nation," the Alabama senator said Trump is weighing how to implement, if elected, immigration proposals that have included a vow to enact a "deportation force" to eject illegal immigrants living in the United States.

"He's wrestling with how to do that," Sessions said. "People that are here unlawfully, came into the country against our laws, are subject to being removed. That's just plain fact."

The GOP nominee held a meeting with Hispanic supporters at Trump Tower in New York on Saturday to elicit ideas about how to implement a "humane" and "efficient" immigration policy.

"What I'm certain about is that he did not make a firm commitment yesterday, or the meeting the other day, about what he will do with that. But he did listen, and he's talking about it," Sessions said.

Trump's newly appointed campaign manager Kellyanne Conway also deflected a definitive answer on whether Trump still backs a deportation force to remove illegals, saying it's a decision "to be determined."

Trump Rules Out Legal Status for Aliens: They Must 'Leave the Country' (UNLESS)

By Todd Beamon | Thursday, 25 Aug 2016 06:53 PM

Donald Trump said Thursday that he was not softening his stance on illegal immigration and that "there's no path to legalization unless people leave the country."

"There's no path to legalization unless people leave the country," the Republican nominee told Anderson Cooper on CNN after speaking to supporters in Manchester, N.H. "When they come back in, they can start paying taxes."

"They still have to leave?" Cooper asked.
"There's no path to legalization unless they leave the country and come back," Trump said.

He told Cooper that he would give law enforcement the authority to deport "bad dudes" — meaning those who have committed crimes — from the United States.

However, Trump would not say whether he would round up other illegals — telling Cooper that once the initial deportations occurred, "then we can talk."
