Trump's Sacramento rally prompts I-5 traffic advisory

Caltrans officials are warning drivers to expect major traffic delays Wednesday along Interstate 5 near Sacramento International Airport in preparation for a Donald Trump campaign rally.

Traffic is expected to increase along I-5 at Airport Boulevard between 3 p.m. and 10 p.m. as guests to the campaign arrive.

The rally is scheduled from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., and doors for the event will open at 4 p.m., according to Trump rally organizers.

Caltrans and the CHP urge drivers trying to make their flights to add additional travel time to the airport and expect up to one hour delays.

Supporters wait in heat to see presidential candidate

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KCRA) —Thousands of people rallied on Wednesday in Sacramento in support of presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump. A small group of anti-Trump protestors were quickly drowned out by Trump fans who shouted, "USA, USA."

“I want to see him as president,” Trump supporter Turby Kohler said. “Plus, if there are any protestors, I want to get right in there and knock a few out."

Many of the Trump supporters stood in the hot sun for hours in triple-digit heat.

"I wouldn't stand in line for the Stones or Elvis or Bruce Springsteen - but I will vote for him," Geno Cassella said.

The Trump rally attracted plenty of young people - including Tommy Payne of Woodland, who was dressed up in red, white and blue.

"We are the young supporters of Donald Trump,” she said. “We really like his ideals, his economic policies and of course, 'Build the wall.’”

Immigration is a hot button issue for many Trump supporters, while others, like Aidan Smith of Elk Grove, admire his business background.

"I think Donald Trump is bringing, like, a change to America," Smith said. "So, many of our politicians are not doing anything and Donald Trump will actually do stuff -- he's proven in his business he will get stuff done."

Supporters said they like the fact that Trump is not afraid to speak his mind.

"I don't want to hear a crybaby up there,” Kohler said. “I want to hear somebody that tells it like it is."

Trump is expected to address some 5,000 supporters, but one prominent politician is not planning to attend: Sacramento Sheriff Scott Jones, the Republican candidate for Congress. His campaign said Jones will vote for Trump -- but will not actively campaign for the billionaire businessman.

KCRA 3 political analyst Kevin Riggs said that Trump "has put together enough support to become the nominee-- but very polarizing."

“That's a real problem for candidates in very closely fought contests,” Riggs added. “The 7th Congressional District is sort of the poster child for that closely fought race. That's why it's a real problem for Scott Jones.”

Presumptive Republican nominee Donald J. Trump was greeted by several dozen demonstrators outside the Sacramento International Jet Center on Wednesday evening, where he was due to speak. “America Was Never Great!!!” read one sign. Others shouted “Shame on you!” at attendees.

According to Breitbart News’ Michelle Moons, who was on location, the protesters were attempting to intimidate those arriving at the rally. Law enforcement formed a human wall between the demonstrators and the Trump supporters.

Trump fans had a presence, too, including a giant red “Make America Great Again” hat:

The protest dwindled to roughly 15 demonstrators as the rally event began.

Nearby, in Davis, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) was also holding a rally, as he attempts to come from behind to defeat Hillary Clinton — and, possibly, to deny her the nomination.

The two latest polls in the Golden State have each shown Sanders within 2 points of Clinton — a statistical dead heat. Clinton leads among early voters, however, who historically have formed two-thirds of California primary voters. Election Day turnout will determine the winner.

SACRAMENTO — Large numbers of pro-Donald Trump for President youth exiting a campaign rally in Sacramento on Wednesday evening clashed with a small group of anti-Trump protesters that had been trying their hardest to intimidate rallygoers streaming toward the venue.

Two of those among the anti-Trump protest crowd wore National Lawyer’s Guild Legal Observer hats as they documented activities throughout the evening. The familiar caps have shown up in places like Ferguson, Missouri on the night of pre-Thanksgiving riots in 2014. (The National Lawyer’s Guild has also been accused of being a communist front group.)

Another protester was seen wearing what appeared to be a Mexican flag, with the word “Mexico” across the bottom. A couple of protesters waved signs, including “America was Never Great!!!” Several in the leftist crowd also shouted “shame” at Trump supporters.

One young girl proudly sported a large flag with the image of the murderous, marxist Cuban revolutionary Che Guevara. (President Barack Obama recently posed in front of an image of Guevara on a tour to the long-embargoed Cuba.)

The group had been attempting to intimidate those trying to move toward entering the airport hangar venue by squeezing the entry line against one of a sea of Trump gear booths. Law enforcement officers then formed a human shield between the pro- and anti-Trump factions. Little was then heard from the small protest crowd from closer to the entrance until Trump wrapped up his speech and a flood of rallygoers began streaming out of the venue.

Nearing the field of vehicles where anti-Trump protesters were gathered, a group of pro-Trump youth began debating the demonstrators to task in a large huddle where several conversations broke out.

Law enforcement eventually broke up the remaining crowd. As scores of vehicles crawled out of the parking field, Trump supporters began tailgating in the parking lot along as they waited for traffic to clear.
