President Trump has backed off his push to designate Mexican drug cartels as terrorist organizations at the request of Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador.
Trump announced his plans to back off the designation on Twitter on Friday. Attorney General William Barr traveled to Mexico on Wednesday to discuss a potential designation with Mexican officials.
"All necessary work has been completed to declare Mexican Cartels terrorist organizations. Statutorily we are ready to do so," Trump tweeted. "However, at the request of a man who I like and respect, and has worked so well with us, President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador we will temporarily hold off this designation and step up our joint efforts to deal decisively with these vicious and ever-growing organizations!"

The Trump administration has pressured the Mexican government to crack down on drug cartels. Lopez Obrador resisted Trump's call to classify the violent gangs as terrorist organizations, asserting that such a designation is "interventionism." Mexican drug cartels are driving increasing amounts of violence in Mexico, which set a record homicide rate this year.
Nearly two dozen people died as a result of gang violence in the Mexican state of Coahuila over the weekend. A branch of the Zetas cartel, the Cartel del Noreste, invaded the state to conquer turf in the region.
