Trump up to 42 percent in national poll
By Jesse Byrnes
Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has built a double-digit lead over his nearest rival, according to a latest national poll released Friday afternoon.
Trump gets the support of 42 percent of Republicans in the Reuters/Ipsos online poll, followed by Ted Cruz, at 32 percent, and John Kasich, at 20 percent.
Trump's lead in the survey had narrowed in recent weeks as he was criticized for a series of attacks on Cruz's wife.
The businessman earlier this week promoted a newly hired strategist to handle delegate efforts and other duties after his campaign manager was charged with battery last month.
Trump has sought to regain his footing in the GOP race as the campaigns turn their focus to New York, after Cruz's won the Wisconsin primary on Tuesday.
Most recent national polls have shown Trump holding a single-digit lead over Cruz.
The Reuters online poll of 626 Republicans was conducted April 4–8.
