As seen on The O'Reilly Factor
On The Factor Thursday night, Bill O'Reilly and Laura Ingraham highlighted the case of a Houston-area principal who ultimately lost her job after telling students they should speak English in the classroom. Amy Lacey, former principal at Hempstead Middle School, received harsh criticism and was placed on paid administrative leave by the school board last winter.

Ultimately, they declined to renew her contract, so Lacey was effectively fired over her belief that English should be spoken by students as much as possible.
Responding this week in the Houston Chronicle, Lacey maintained she made the suggestion based on state law and since standardized tests are in English, she believed it would help Hispanic students. She denies ever "banning" Spanish or supporting "adverse consequences" for students who continued to speak Spanish in class.
The Texas Education Code states, "English is the basic language of this state. Public schools are responsible for providing a full opportunity for all students to become competent in speaking, reading, writing, and comprehending the English language. ... The mastery of basic English skills is a prerequisite for effective participation in the state's educational program."
How can this happen in Texas, O'Reilly asked, noting that the state is one of the nation's most conservative politically.
Ingraham believes there's a "movable red line" established by the left and if you cross that line, there are harsh consequences.
"You will be drummed out of public life, perhaps. You will be terminated, you will be fired, you will be harassed, you'll be called all sorts of names. And this is what this poor teacher came up against. ... They decided to make an example of her," said Ingraham.
They agreed that even though Lacey never mandated that English be spoken, it was still portrayed as an "affront" to Hispanic culture.
O'Reilly was surprised that there was no counter-protest in support of the ousted principal.
Ingraham responded that the left wants to "shut down debate" on issues like this and make people afraid to speak out.
